My Xperia 10 II Dual SIM will be blocked by Tele2 in Sweden

Thanks to s1p and Localphone, I can now use my Xperia with WiFi to call ordinary phones and others can call me on my incoming number. The same thing should work with a dedicated data SIM, but I have not tried that yet. So for anyone who gets blocked by their SIM provider, there is a workaround that worked for me to keep using Sailfish for telephony, almost as usual (my incoming number for SIP is not the same as I had with the SIM and Localphone might not be suitable for making emergency calls, but this way the phone should not be blocked anyway).

I installed and updated s1p through Storeman (see Storeman Installer | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System). Now I have s1p 0.9.12 and that works better for me than previous versions. I thank unmaintained for a great job with s1p! And thank you fingus for pointing me to it.

By the way, the Signal app for Android works for me under Sailfish, but can only be used to communicate with others who run Signal, as far as I know (and be aware that it might not be as secure as they say).

Surprisingly hard to find a definitive answer, but apparently not.

They can join the N800 in the obsolete box.

I’m confused. Is it illegal not to own a mobile or not to be able to make emergency calls in Sweden??

I had something similar in UK in 2010. When I told British Telecom to terminate my landline, I was told I had to have a landline in my property. When I asked for the legal regulations, it went very quiet and my landline was removed.

The way I see it (which may or may not be correct cos you are in Sweden), but over here in Britain, it would be regarded to be lack of performance on the part of the service provider. You have been signed up to a contract which the service provider cannot fulfill, therefore you should be released from the contract without penalties.

It’s not as if the situation you find yourself is something you have any control over.

No, but it is illegal to provide phone service that cannot handle emergency calls.

It is not illegal to own an old phone, regardless of its cellular capabilities. That would have been crazy, even by Swedish standards.

What they choose to do is to render older phones that aren’t compatible with VoLTE and especially emergency calls useless, as they are rejected to connect to the cellular network. It’s like they partially brick it.

Does it work as data device with a dedicated data sim? As far as I know from experience, with data sim’s it’s never possible to make phone calls, so it should not do this emergency call check and accept any device. With usual mobile access points it’s also not possible to make emergency calls, and never ever was.

Thanks. I can understand the requirements for telecom providers to have the correct capability. But it seems a massive assault on civil liberty to demand individual aquiescence. I’m surprised Greta T isn’t on the case.

Is LTE coverage guaranteed all over Sweden with no not spots?

No, a phone without VoLTE is rejected to connect to a cellular network. Emergency calls do not require a SIM and it doesn’t matter what type of SIM you have in your device as it is rejected on device basis.

There is no such guarantee or law.

Agree. I only thought of how to continue using old SFOS phones as data devices when 2G will no more exist.

What this phone company did is an impertinence!

Edit: So the question arises, for one who still wants to use such a phone as data device: How to change the IMEI number to an IMEI copied from a dedicated mobile access point and so camouflage the old not VoLTE capable Sony’s?

This is a good question that I would like to have the answer for myself. We know that devices can be rejected based on IMEI number but the question if they query the cellular capabilities of the device and rejected based on that. In that case it doesn’t matter if you change the IMEI number.

No. They can’t request VoLTE emergency call capability from a mobile access point, that’s a small box with a cellular data modem and a WLAN access point, nothing more. No mic, no speaker, no display, only on/off button. Initial config via computer.
So the old Sony’s should look to the network like such wireless AP’s to use them as data device and not being nannied with their f* safety rules.

I still have an Xperia X F5121 here with Android 8, updated to the latest version via OTA, and it has a VoLTE switch (see screenshots). It currently doesn’t have a SIM card, which is why everything is grayed out.

If I were you I would insert a SIM and use it with Android. SFOS runs fine on this phone but no AAS possible and never VoLTE, so you can’t make phone calls as soon as 2G will be shut down.

First: I think “Greta T” inst a topic that connects in any way to Sailfish OS or Swedish mobile networks. So it would be fine not to discuss her political impact here.
Second: I appreciate it, when I’m with people who dont call people “f* retards”, especially if this persons at least try to fight for a better world.

Comviq has sent me a reminder today. Unfortunately not to my Xperia but to my Android phone that had the card at that moment. But there, they even named the device. The message is:

Hej,

so naming the phone (unlucky me had the card in the wrong phone right now) and saying that it’s going to be blocked from making phone calls.

But since some people in the thread thought about using data SIMs: This and also previous messages I got as SMS from my provider never talked about blocking network access. Only phone calls. But we’ll see on February 2 whether this is true. (or I might change provider to one that uses Telia to make sure I don’t run into trouble here)

Thanks for information! If a phone depends on 2G network to make phone calls, so it consequentially can’t no more make phone calls if there is no 2G network any more.

But it’s good in this meaning, you can still use the phone as data device and still have data connection to 4G network?

FWIW I moved my SIM from an XA to a freshly flashed 10 Dual SIM I4II3 but still got another SMS today saying it will be blocked.

Not sure what to do now

Are dedicated Data SIMs available in your country?

Not sure but I just use that phone for SMS, so not sure if that will also be unavailable.

I also just flashed a 10 III, it has the Volte options in Sailfish Settings, but the 10 does not. I also flashed it back to Android, checked Volte is there and works, and back to Sailfish but still nothing. Might be that the Android version on the 10 III is 11 and 9 on the 10.
