Jolla Phone update - lights on, technical bits and the schedule

Yes, pretty sure J2 is also using libhybris, if that’s the question

(Halium is using libhybris, too!)

Are you a dev and you know this for sure? Becasue if it’s true, than It kinda screws up the idea I had :frowning:
I was thinking about porting SFOS to Moto Edge 50 Neo/ThinkPhone 25 which has pretty similar hardware to JP2, but if it’s the way you say, then it’s not gonna be that easy…
If it’s not going in some more native way then it’s kinda sad…

If the new Jolla phone uses libhybris, that actually aligns with the normal Sailfish porting model, not against it.
Not an expert but I think the troubles you will face in porting will not be related to libhybris.

I am not sure, I would love to be mistaken and I had the same hopes, here’s the response Jolla Phone Pre-order campaign has started - #426 by attah

Also, to think of it, non-hybris support means “mainlining” and that may not be that fast for a freshly outed Dimensity chip.

(But that doesn’t mean you will have a harder time adapting for TP25 (I eyed that thing once) - if, of course, an android custom rom is already available… which is probably still not.. hmm)

Thanks to @unmaintained, here it is:

From day 1 to end of the september I batch.
(some approximations around 10’000 pcs and few data in the first days)

So there was a slow down when it passed the 1000 in the 1000 batch. Quite interestingly however the price increase for the Sep batch 1 did not really lead to a slow down. It will be interesting to see how Sep batch 2 will do after the 2nd price increase. It is really a pity how the memory market is running amok.

As far as I’m know this would not be “mainlining”. When manufacturer is making the phone with Android they are getting kernel and firmware blobs from SoC manufacturer and it’s made to run only with android. We need libhybris for Linux, because in most cases the kernel for android is modified & is using not mainlined drivers (it’s device specific), and also in most cases is already old.

Mainlining would be if manufacturer would give all the specs and everything including drivers to kernel devs and they would update kernel with this and then you would be able to run typical Linux distro with mainline kernel on the device.
Unless I got it wrong, I’m not that good with Linux as I really think

Currently XA2/+/Ultra SD630 got mainlined and that’s how PostmarketOS runs on it (without display output in my case, but it runs in console mode - I flashed XA2+ with XA2 build, so something could have went wrong )

EDIT:
I was expecting for the devs to get drivers and everything do have a modified kernel for JP2 that would run SFOS directly without libhybris). That (as far as I’m aware) could make running SFOS on Motorola Edge 50 Neo/ThinkPhone 25 easier, because it has Dimensity 7300, so maybe drivers for a lower model could work. IDK, I have no idea about this, I’m guessing basically.

My take: Mediatek has the machinery to release bionic (android) vendor services to the OEM, which connect to stub kernel drivers that don’t do much. That “vendorland” is not usable in glibc GNU/Linux, and if you don’t want the price of a Purism, you cannot afford to make a special request “hey, this time share some real kernel modules instead of ‘bionicware’”

That makes sense. Sadge.
Well, at least in theory when Jolla will make SFOS running (and they made it, of course we don’t know how complete it is) then it should be easier to run SFOS on Moto, then without it, because we have a version of SFOS running on MTK Dimensity. At least to my monkey brain it sound like it makes sense. Does it really tho…? Does it make it easier for real?

Hi, is there a special edition or a special scope of delivery for the first three batches?
I am not sure I read that.
Best regards Alex

more importantly, will there be a list of users for early beta testing, and who do we have to bribe to get on it ?

Hi guys. Has anyone received an email from Jolla regarding the full payment? I remember that at the start of the campaign Jolla mentioned that they would send us an email during March. However, we’re at the end of the month and I’m kinda concerned that I haven’t received any email yet.

No worries, nobody has received emails yet. There is also another week to go in march, Jolla has to keep their reputation for maxing out their deadlines

Just be patient! Guys are very busy.

To be fair though. Maxing out timelines appears to be industry standard. Delivery planned in Q2 means last day of June, at the earliest.

Phew. Thanks. I’d been worrying that I missed the mail)

Every time you ask it will be a week longer.

[friend mode] C’mon, WT.Sane,it’s a fun tradition but this time, isn’t it a bit unfair?
As they didn’t ask to speed up, they were just anxious having lost/passed the mail.

Imagine: everybody gets the J2, saying how cool it is, and you are alone in the dark and rain asking in the desert wehere is your voucher/mail!
Distressing perspective, isn’it?
