If you are interested in the phone, you should register your e-mail at the bottom of the order page to register your interest.
Jolla specifically mention the US there. They probably want to make sure there is sufficient interest before spending resources on making it available in the US. No guarantees though of course.
I agree that it is not luxury as such. The price is not artificially inflated, and most importantly, unlike with most luxury items, it is not really doing much in terms of showing off your wealth.
The price is of course higher than with off the mill mass market phones. That is a direct consequence of economy of scale and it being a small production size product. Assembly in Finland adds a bit more as well but most importantly, they also need to support the development of Sailfish OS via the hardware sales.
If you are always after the cheapest, you can’t expect quality. On top I can’t understand how people are claiming the right to get fair loans, when they always and only are heading for the cheapest.
There has been quite a few from US wishing this phone. I hope everyone has filled the questionary for Jolla also! For quick solution I would imagine it to be easiest if someone come from states and brings multiple devices for people in states at once. Or find someone to mail these to the states. Don’t really know which is easier from customs/tariffs pov
There’s definite interest. I already signed up for the newsletter so I’m just waiting at this point for some kind of announcement regarding the availability
They need to be able to partner with a company like murena(or someone else) to bring it to the US. Seriously we are basically down to apple, Google and Samsung phones. Need a different option with the privacy changes coming to both Apple and Google.
I’ve sadly read bad things about brax3. Enough to make me wary of being near them. I have been looking at the Hiroh phone, the CPU is worse than the one I currently use though (nothing phone 3) and I’m not sure the price is justified. Jolla hits the sweet spot for everything imo. Android compatibility, kill switches, Linux os, user replaceable battery. This phone hit all the right checkmarks. Nexphone seems interesting too but again, the hardware specs aren’t the best
Regarding US market. As certification costs a lot Jolla need a lot of customers to cover that expense. That goes for all other markets as different market has it’s own standards.
Another factor is that in US people are also used to different customer care then in EU. So it would help if local office is present. Which is also a huge cost. And permanent at that.
I think a great way would be to sell a slightly higher price to US customers in batches like what’s going on now. I think enough people would be interested. The higher price would cover FCC cost and any shipping issues.
FCC certification is at least in order of tens of thousands $ for a phone. So “a slightly higher price” would be in the case of at least a thousand buyers.
Jolla probably needs physical presence in US to handle after sales, tariffs, get along with carriers, and maybe other things that we are not aware of.
Maybe there are patents involved as well and that’s why they couldn’t license sfosX.
I don’t think they hate money or a 350 million people market.
Some already mentioned, the US market is difficult, with telecom and automotive probably worse (pickier) than the avg .
Certifications costs a lot. And for sure none will make them any favour.
Then customer care… No offense here, really, but in current state of things, they’d be ashes before sending the mayday.
Unless they’re allowed to sell kind of some tinkering hobbyist kits, with no guarantees/customer support etc.. telecom is very much regulated and under close scrutiny - I’m not a lawyer, but for me it looks unlikely.
For once I’d be glad I were wrong.
There must be a reason, why even a company like Fairphone was absent from the US market until it had grown substantially in size and found a partner for that.
I imagine if fair phone pulled it off, Jolla can. We already have Linux phones here that can use voLTE. It’s just that Jolla is in the lead mobile wise
