Jolla Phone Pre-order campaign has started

Fairphone is a small player but still much bigger than Jolla. They can sell probably at least 10 times more phones in the US, if not more. This changes the equation dramatically. And also finding a customer service partner is getting easier with size of operation.

If Jolla is spreading itself too thin, no one will be happy in the end.

Here the numbers:

The J2 has sold 10 000 and is now at ~80 per day, but for how long. Can we reach 20k this year?

How successful that would be in the US? Jolla would be competing with a product from a “made in the US” maker, and the “made in Europe” vibes of Jolla might not be very appealing there. Of course the Jolla product is better but as we see, politics also matter.

As far as I recall that was always the reason given for not going to the US.

I don’t think most of the ones in the US hold a torch to the Jolla as you said. You’d be surprised how many want a functional Linux phone here. People went nuts for the fair phone, I’m sure the same will happen for Jolla. It being European made isn’t an issue for the people who want Linux phones

I do not doubt that there is a market for a phone that is truly separate from big tech. The problem is rather a mixture of certification costs, customer support and logistics (basically a partner is needed) and then there are patents, those could be show stoppers without much one could do about them. Even if each of those could be overcome it would bind meaningful resources.

I would wholly agree - cheapest isn’t the best…

If Jolla ever gets around to supporting / selling licenses for Android AppSupport on SFOS ports then one of the ports like the Fairphone 5 or Xperia 1 IV might be an option for the US.

Some enterprising soul might even set up shop in the US selling those phones.

That’s the thing though. How would you get the phones in the country, how would you avoid the costs of certification etc?

“Dude, look at my untainted Linux kernel. How’s your Google one?”

Said no-one ever (plus, it will be a ‘Google kernel’)

Historically not even Nokia managed to punch a hole in that market.

I’m assuming the mentioned Fairphones and Sony phones are already available in the US.

If additional certification is needed for installing SFOS on them, just ignore it while you’re a small, insignificant entrepreneur.

As far as I remember Fairphone just sells their Fairbuds headphones there.

I had to import my fp5 into the US from ebay seller in UK. Was no US seller then, still isn’t AFAIK.

OK, I just re-checked my memory . . . through Murena’s US store, you can order a FP6 and a few accessories including fairbuds. Also Amazon sells the fairbuds, including the curiously named (to me) “Fairbuds XL” headphones and some replacement parts for the FP4.

Jolla made their decision, I am sure they have good reasons, but I think the comparison with Nokia is unfair. Nokia probably had very high ambitions. Like Sony or Asus, they stopped shipping because they went below their target.

Jolla is not in the same situation, even 0.05% of the US market would be big for Jolla, in a market of over 100 million units per year. (27 million units 2025Q2, source: Canalys: Nearly half of Q2 2025’s smartphones brought into the US are made in India | HardwareZone Singapore )

Can you please check this? It’s been 15 days without an answer, and still didn’t receive the fixed invoice. I’ve already sent them a reminder e-mail, no replies. The order number is #15035
I need to give the correct invoice to accounting…
Thank you!

A silicone protective cover has been posted on the Jolla store. But it appears to be still a mess. Somehow I ended up on this page, listing “batch #1” which can be ordered for 499,00 EUR while it says in the description correctly 649 EUR (upgradable) and “Sep II 2026”.

I think you can also only get there by search engine yet.

The cover is available in all 3 colours and additionally transparent, which is cool.

It is quite a bit more expensive than the C2 protective cover but then, the C2 is a white label product with much higher production numbers for the cover probably.

I won’t link to it as long as its not on the platform officially. Obviously the first entry is messed up and not a real offer. The second is not yet properly online it seems.

I suppose I’d be tempted by this cover… But my priority would definitely be a screen protector!
If both are available, I’ll get one of each! :star_struck:

Are these still produced? Whow. Since Gorilla Glass I never seen these except for these privacy protection thingies I have to use in my job.
There will be someone offering these as well as protective covers come the time and the market.
The time sure will come…

They might have become less common but I still see plenty of cracked screens.
