Jolla Phone Pre-order campaign has started

Perhaps, when (IF?!) I actually get my handy on this phone, I might get this secret knowledge in the future, too.
Let’s wait and see.

I’m hesitating to get a second smartphone: we’re at 199%. Actually, the second batch should arrive after the first 2,700. So that should allow me to spread out the payments over time. Does anyone have any information?

We’re over 4k units now. 200%. In less that 1 week.

Yep, confusing… As for production, 2000 units of batch 2 have been sold already so no doubts there anylonger.

How to know what batch you’re in? If the moment you buy the phone the website states it is batch #2 you are in batch #2, regardless of the number of units sold (even for batch #1 they initially planned 2000 but instead batch #1 “lasted” until unit #2700).

Total: 4’700 Units

Edit : before Jolla announced a third batch

I backed the tablet too - and never got one. Nevertheless if I remember correctly we got a partial refund and also vouchers for the xperia licenses.

Nevertheless Jolla delivered both the C1 and C2, so they surely learned from the tablet fiasco, so to my mind no need to worry about the upcoming phone now.

If I remember correctly, @JoOppen got one. Even though he bought it from me and not from Jolla. :winking_face_with_tongue:

I think the tablet gate was a very special situation. And in my opinion, Jolla did a lot to somehow refund everyone, at least to some degree. Something which not every company would have tried in their situation.

I hope and think they learned from this fiasco.
And I think we should close this case now finally and instead look into the future. There is for sure enough hard work for Jolla to cope with.

I for myself am quite happy, they decided to take the risk again to produce their own hardware.
Now keep fingers crossed that all is going the way it should and that there are no unforeseen problems occurring.

I missed the first batch because of reasons, but got in the second one. The features matched well enough to my wishlist.

Smaller screen sizes and headphone jack will be forever missed.

MediaTek ?. Does that mean we can flash SFOS to other MediaTek based phones or SFOS just restricted to C2 and C3 ?.

Various degrees of support for a dozen Qualcoom platforms does not make it so there - why would anything be different here? Phone SW generally does not work like that.

Wow, didn’t expect this to get so popular (I am the developer). By the way, this is (probably) coming to Jolla Store soon as well

Well, but that is only pre-orders by community and some nerds, unfortunately no one knows how many people will purchase retail then :person_shrugging:

For now SailfishOS is mainly for enthusiasts, but looking forward to see privacy-first-people outside of community. At least it is almost ready-made product, unlike another devices effectively designed to “play” Linux

I hope Jolla starts snowball effect journey here. If they sell 10000 unit of J2 phone and on average they get 150€ profit per phone, that is 1,5M€. That divided to 5 years they will at least support the device will be 300k€ per year. With that money they could pay for the Qt license and still have money as a buffer. This on another hand would allow much better options for development and maybe bring much more devs to SailfishOS. More devs and better things should bring more users which provide more revenue for Jolla to invest in to the human resources and what not. After (at the latest) 4 years publish another hardware option again to raise even more money and ride to the sunset :sunny: Just remember from now on, always under promise and over deliver. You have succeeded amazingly with J2 at least until this point!

LineageOS have better support for qualcomm compared to mediatek based chips as the later don’t publish opensource drivers.

If sfos can run on mediatek based phones like Nord 2, Moto g73, Samsung Galaxy M16, etc…. we’ll have affordable sub $200 devices.

More the people use, will have more native apps or webapps, instead of using some android compatibility.

You seem to really not get it.
It is not at all like PCs - basically every phone needs a different build.
This can be harder or easier, but it takes custom builds all the same.

SFOS generally also uses kernels that are originally meant of Android - so it somehow having wider support than Android in general is not really going to be a thing.

Woop woop! Looks like @Jolla should really think about the batch number 3 before the weekend

I’m aware every phone need different build. Compared to qualcomm, mediatek is really hesitant on sharing source code to the public.

Few months back I bought a used miatoll phone just to run Sailfish as used/brand new Sony Xeperia were way above my budget.

My point is, if sfos is available for a popular budget phone using mediatek, it would be a game changer as Jolla have 2 phones based on mediatek, adding support for older model may not be a challenge(i assume), and if they can pull it off with android support, then more ordinary people will start using SailfishOS.

My only real concern with making a commitment for a secure phone that is planned to be built in the EU is that the clown act in Brussels will decide that making such a phone available to EU citizens represents a ‘security threat’. How long before we hear that Jolla users are buying this phone so as they can get their news from RT.com and all the usual nonsense we have to endure in order to justify the provision of back door access for EU government agencies.
