Apologies if this isn’t the optimal place for such a question, but the other boards didn’t seem suitable.
Is it possible to place a pre-order from countries outside of EU/UK/Norway/Switzerland?
I live in Ukraine and I am looking to move off American technology services. To be honest Android is one of the more difficult ones to get rid off. That being said, Google’s intention to block F-Droid was an inflection point for me, I use a lot of open source apps (many of them daily) on F-Droid and I will not install spyware.
I understand if there is no formal support for purchases originating in Ukraine and the delivery costs are higher. I am just curious if it’s even possible to get a pre-order.
P.S. I had the N900 back in the day, so in a vague sense I am a returning customer.
Previously I bought some European sports equipment and forwarded to me via a post forwarding service. I think it would probably work for this too, as it says the device will be constructed with consideration for the bands in US and other countries
Assuming the answer is no from Jolla, and if you don’t have a friend in the EU that can purchase on your behalf, there is still the possibility of using a mail forwarder.
Make some prepayment e.g. 1 € that works as an ID verification (they see your name on the bank payment).
Get anything delivered to their address in Germany. (They just don’t accept very big items like washing machines or big TVs.)
When they receive anything on your name, you choose a delivery carrier, pay for the shipping cost by recharging your prepaid account.
Same day they have the money, they ship to you.
As example from Germany to Portugal I chose UPS and it cost me 17.48 € (minus the 1 € I already paid step 2 above). I needed an LCD screen replacement for a small apparatus, and the maintenance shop I found only sold to Germany and Austria.
Of course it’s more expensive because you pay transport for your purchase to Germany and the VAT to Germany as normal customer, and then you pay mailbox.de for the transport to your country and possibly additional costs at your customs.
I do have friends/relatives in the EU and there are good mail forwarding services in Ukraine targeting EU eCom.
I am just curious if Jolla will let me place a direct pre-order to a Ukrainian address in the first place (with the understanding that no official support is provided).
Really happy to see solid early momentum. I hope there will be more than 10K pre-orders; all the way up to 50K or even more!
I think with recent developments, there is a small (on a relative basis, it could still be millions of people) but growing market for phones not based on Android/iOS with no involvement of US or Chinese groups.
To be fair, I think the early birds are already getting a damn good deal with a fixed € 499 price, considering the final price is going to be significantly higher and could even increase further depending on RAM prices.
Me on the other hand I hope that there are no complications, because if there needs to be a cost cutting I have a feeling we will get a low end SOC, and you saw how low end stuff performs with the C2.
Let’s just hope for the best and look at the bright side for now!
The exterior frame has XA2 written all over it which in retrospect just has to be a styling icon of its time, even though in terms of size the screen is a touch bigger than the XA2 Ultra. Love it! Not so keen on the ios notch though.
You are right on that. I just thought if there could be something that can be done to gather even bigger initial order size. The more customers the more resources Jolla can afford to put on polishing the software and healthier the whole ecosystem would be.
And the price is somewhat secondary thing to me. I just wish that Jolla and Sailfish would really get wind on their sails .
I still don’t understand why the C2 gets such a bad rap for performance, it’s light years ahead of my Xperia 10 II. The only times the performance is really horrendous is when an Android application goes haywire and uses the CPU at 100%, which seems to be a bug in App Support more than a problem with the device itself (and also only seems to happen with apps that always perform horribly even on ‘real’ Android). Otherwise I get near 60 fps all the time. Physical build quality is a different story, but the performance is pretty nice.
Maybe someone already spotted it, but assuming the Bluetooth version is correct (not held back by Bluez etc), we are looking at the Mediatek Dimensity 9300](Dimensity 9300 | MediaTek | All-Big-Core 5G SoC) or 9300+. Everything else is 5.3 or 6.0.
Edit; i’m probably wrong.
Paired with WiFi 6 that puts us instead at 8400/8450 or 8300/ 8350..
But 10 II looks very slow compared to 10 III.
From my little time with the device (friends device), my 10 III is much faster on native apps and insanely faster on Android apps.
And 10 III is not the epitome of power. It’s a mid range soc from ages ago.
If I’m getting a new sfos device for 500€ I personally do not expect it to be on par or a bit faster than my very old 10 III. I expect something great, but maybe that’s just me idk.
