Jolla Phone Pre-order campaign has started

Credit is not default for paypal users it’s a separate service one need to apply for and i couldn’t find any information for the county i live in.

My xperia 10v security updates are ending in next summer AFAIK and I don’t see the current status of sailfish for that device to be mature enough to be used s a daily driver. So, this new model does interest me, but what I’m more interested in, is that how long and in how fast cycle will the android layer get security updates? For example, I do not want to connect to online banking and such with an outdated OS behind it.

No, we are plenty (well, at least, you and me  )
But yes, XA2 GPS can absolutely be fixed.

I probably missed it, is there any information from Jolla regarding the intended Sailfish OS licence model for this Jolla Phone?

Since the Hacker News was linked in the OP post, one of the most interesting post in Hacker News is this.

In 2013 they released the Jolla 1, a phone with custom hardware and Linux software. In 2015 they tried again with a tablet, but it failed on the side of hardware production and the company became insolvent.

In 2017 there came investors, among others ROS Telecom, a Russion telecom provider. They pivoted to only providing software, mainly on Sony phones. That is still ongoing.

Since the Russia - Ukraine war the Russion investors went MIA. The Finnish people from Jolla started a new company and had all assets moved to that company. They are now trying to rebuild the company and apparently extend into hardware again, even though the PCB design is off the shelf.

I have been a user since 2014 and am quite happy with their offering. It offers ssh root access if you want. Optionally manually installing software. Very much a GNU/Linux experience. Privacy focused and user oriented. And now slowly but surely there are parts of the software being opensourced.

Is this post correct, that it was the investors ROS telecom that pushed for adopting the Sony smartphones? The natural follow up question is why would they do that. Was it because ROS already subsidized Sony phones?

This also links to the current model similar to what started Jolla with their original smartphone, with the Russian investors gone there is no reason to keep using the Sony phones. What is your take on this?

@rainemak Please clarify how it will be with VAT for VAT payers.
There were no field for entering VAT, will it be subtracted in final payment?
Inside EU VAT 2 VAT invoicing the total price to pay should be without VAT

Its more of a “get things done” issue than an operating system issue. Nokia had phones running linux and apps for them and so on.

On the contrary SFOS has trouble doing what a normal linux distro can.

The quote doesn’t actually say this.

And I don’t believe there ever was a link between these two facts.

Rostelecom/OMP always targeted their own hardware, I don’t there is or ever was an (official) Aurora OS - Equipped Sony phone.

And it was/is the Sailfish X Program that targeted Xperias - and Sailfish X ia basically the Public Beta/Demo/POC software product demoing it to potential commercial licensees.

Sony was mainly chosen because of their Open Devices Program.
Remember you need an unlockable bootloader, and not many manufacturers offer that reliably.
Sony did and does.

Basically the only other option would have been Google Pixel - it should be obvious why you wouldn’t choose Google as your hardware source…

Also the Xperias are solid phones with a broad selection from midrange to flagship models.

It looks like you are to pessimistic.
1570 and 78% funded.
This is the last call for pre-order.

There’s currently been 1573 pre-orders. What happens when we hit 2000, will others be able to preorder at the €499 price-point?

How? (20 chars…)

I’d say by tomorrow eod, Jolla has 2100 preorders in the pocket. Go SFOS!

I’d love to be proven wrong on this. It could be more like late tomorrow as tortoisedoc says (for the record I still suspect we’ll just about make it into Monday).

Jolla should get to buying the champagne.

That’s a bit of a difficult comparison I think. SFOS focuses a lot more on a user friendly interface as well as the Android support they provide (app ecosystem for Linux on Nokia was minimal). So I can see how SFOS runs into more issues.

The scope of these two projects is just quite different as well.

Anyway, I wasn’t comparing Linux distros (and their flaws). I was replying to the comparison between the price of Chinese devices and the Jolla Phone.

There are several logical reasons for Chinese devices to be cheaper (selling data, state funding, not having to maintain an entire OS, target audience etc.). That comparison just doesn’t make any sense to me.

What i meant to highlight is that as long as the phone does what it should users don’t care much about the OS not the price of the chinese stuff. Of course this happens gradually -ie don’t expect all those people that their life “depends” on social media to come over- but at least we have to get the basics right. Then the rest will fall in place.

Please, please under any circumstances do not use the search function for a complete documentation with photos and a complete explanation of the repair process.

Feathers
Jolla shop is administered by Shopify, a Canadian company that specialises in maintaining the administration of smaller shops around the world. When pre-ordering I saw below the page: ’ powered by Google’. Apparently Shopify makes use of some designs by Google. Shopify says it obeys to European GDPR.

Why not? Page states:

This product will only be produced if at least 2000 units are supported by January 04, 2026 23:55 (Helsinki)

Love a lot about the phone but wonder about the quality of the speakers. Did anybody of you see some information about this?
I’m a happy C2 user but coming from XA2, I was a bit shocked about the C2 audio quality.

No, but I guess it’S only one speaker. There are just on one side holes for a speaker.
