Jolla Phone : First Experiences, Pros and Cons

New JP26 user here, and fully migrated from IOS to SFOS
First weeks were strange because UX gesture is different, way of working with apps is different as well. So, it takes some time of practicing to enjoy (and embrasse !) SFOS.

So first, regarding the material, everything fine and absolutely nothing to say.

About SFOS :
Pros : really well thinked about gestures. Simple by design. AAP is a lifebuoy I actually need for compatibility with my bank and other proprietary apps. Battery life is 2 days for me with 3/4h per day screen, excellent !

Cons : at this time (from my understanding and this forum) :no NFC passthrough in AAP, no widgets for app shortcuts natively (I like the One push button for automations), no Android auto…

So, this is a quick feedback and nothing found as a deal breaker.

I finally really want to thanks Jolla’s Team for this impressive JP26, based on a blazing fast and robust SFOS. I keep an eye opened for the roadmap

I noticed that a lot of Aurora apps that need internetconnection only work on WiFi, or is it just me?

Spotilol is running for me without any problems on mobile data under newest SFOS 5.2.0.18.

I don’t know exactly if its this but in the settings for AAS there is an option to treat your data internet connection as wifi. Its recommended to keep this on unless you specifically need to have it separate in AAS for something.

I have it like that ajd sometimes it happens that when i leave my place and wifi gets disconnected and my phone switches to mobile internet it takes a while for the android apps to notice and they just have no internet for a while. Restarting them helps tho.

I changed the settings for AAS, turned WiFi of and rebooted my JP. However till now none result, the apps did not work. When switched on the WiFi again the apps were working. So it looks this was’nt the problem. Thx anyway.

That is a known bug since .18

Knowing the problem exists already that long, why has’nt @Jolla made a fix? Many sailors will be frustrated by this problem. Not really an invitation to make a start with SailfishOS, also not for as long as all those common used apps are not in the Jolla-store.

Maybe because that known issue was posted merely 5 days ago? It appears you have unrealistic expectations, also regarding the possibly thousands or tenthousands of “common apps” that exist on Android.

I read today that, when I am not wrong, the same kind of problem was noted before in Bugs report Feb 2023. So the problem seems not new to me. And yes your are right, maybe my expertations were a bit to unrealistic knowing that there are thousands of apps. But I think that for daily driving the necessary apps will be significant less. At any way it’s appears to be a good choice to hold my old iPhone standby for those, in my opinion, necessary apps.

Bug was reported a few days ago and seems to affect only a fraction of users

Requirements differ from person to person. For me the JP26 is already daily driveable, without even using AAS or any Android app.

Granted I do have my old iPhone as purely wifi based device for two purposes: It is the primary device for my Signal account and it has a banking app. I could replace the former by using AAS and get Android Signal onto the JP26, just as never used primary account and for the banking app, I could get an app free replacement option.

The problem in 2023 was something different. According to the recent report, the problem appeared in version 5.2.0.18 and did not exist in version 5.2.0.17.

Personally, I wait 3 weeks before updating my phone, I read the Release Notes thread like [Release notes] Finlayson 5.2.0.18 - Jolla Phone first where people report their problems so I can decide if I want to update or skip.

Hey, batch#2 user here, got mine a couple weeks ago, didn’t see heavy use yet, migration underway. Just a few impressions from this time with the phone.

I do like the overall feel and design, both on hardware and OS side. I’m grateful for the Jolla team and community, finally something that feels like a viable alternative to the big ones. The few Android apps I’ve tried work well, and I’m really welcoming the notification led!

I really miss a few things from android though:

  • app switching: I cannot page through least recently used apps with a quick flick. I think a gesture-based OS would offer this
  • app grid: I often find myself guessing what app a small entry belongs to, no app title nor icon displayed
  • notifications feel a bit undercooked, e.g. no way of muting or accessing history
  • nextcloud integration: adding as an account is very nice, but there’s barely anything I can sync to the server, if core apps had it as a plugin functionality, that’d massively boost the device’s usability for me
  • storefronts: the community seems to keep coming up with solutions that plug the hole of the narrow offering on Harbour; I’m having Chum and Storeman installed, and of course they know nothing of each others’ apps; and then there are Aurora and F-Droid which also have no idea what the other has installed. Chasing where an app was installed from is less than ideal
  • alarms: an “upcoming alarm” notification would be much appreciated, so I could switch it off before it goes off
  • tiny thing, but raising volume for alarms would also be nice, more gentle on drowsy morning me

I hope these are eventually helpful if anybody reads it from the team, because that was the goal, rather than sh*tting on Jolla. Really much respect guys and I’m keen to see where SailfishOS is being developed towards!

I would like to get that also. Maybe that could be on events view like a snooze. Disappearing when alarming.

It can be set easily, please look the discussion:

"quick app switch" gesture finally works in 4.0.1, please enable it

I use this so much, seriously needs to be an option in settings at least, if not just default.

Once you get used to it, it’s very sailfish.

Quick flick = dismiss the app.
Long flick = back to last app.

@rla88 You don’t need to use the Terminal, unless you want to:

As I said before I am new to (awesome) SailfishOS, I am using my wonderful JP2 for about four weeks as a daily driver, not realizing that there was yes/no a data-connection because most of the time I was in a WiFi-surrounding. But early this week I was abroad and realized that some apps I was intend to use did not have a data-connection. I was not aware that this was due to the software-update .18. Good advise to wait some weeks next time before updating and wait if there are reported problems. BTW is there a possibility to switch back to .17(in an easy way) or is it better to wait for the update/fix? And following Thejiral I can better reduce the number of Android apps, my iPhone is still standby :slightly_smiling_face: . Thx for your explanation.

Not sure if mentioned by anyone else, but at least for KPN it can be ‘fixed’ by changing data acces point protocol to IP and change the name from ‘internet’ to ‘internet4’ to force ipv4 instead of ipv6, this fixes android apps internet access on mobile data.
