Feedback on Jolla C2

Intresting for me it did not happen even though it took while for my C2 to arrive. When exacly it happened?

I wear it in a vest pocket in front of my chest. It probably happened when I was standing on a ladder and it slipped a bit. Actually, it’s not a big deal. But the glass back is very sensitive there.

In fact the glass back itself looks like it can also be peeled off, even though it’s attached with stronger glue. You can easily stick your fingernail underneath it and start pulling…

At least I’m “glad” I’m not the only one. Makes me feel just a little less miffed about it!

There is a video on YouTube showing how to remove the back of a ‘reeder s19 pro’ for a screen change. A heat gun and a knife are used. It went really fast.

It’s britlle. I broke mine without fall or like that just with coins inside cover. Not a show stopper but not nice.

No need for glass-backcovers, they are heavyer than plastic, take also scratches and can break. So hopefully new Jolla Phone doesn’t have it.

I’m not sure at all that the back cover is made of glass. For me, it’s low quality brittle plastic…

I’m expecting that for the next Jolla phone where the price would probably be much higher than the C2 (cf. poll in another thread), the build quality will also be much better. Not only better specs with a C2-like case…

It’s very hard to build a phone with lower quality than C2…so don’t worry about that

See any (and all) 32bit auroraOS phones, C2 works great as baseline, if your sfos app chugs on C2 there is something wrong with your app, serves its purpose as baseline for app developers

I have never said that C2 is not working fine (software wise), I said as others that build quality from hardware point of view is questionable. I cannot check Aurora devices, as in the European Union, russian products are hard to get.

Magic earth crashes on two of 3 appstarts, i suspect
Mobile network for android apps as the reason for it.
On this vaccation i do actuaöly have a second phone with me to overcome these issues:
Park4nite, magic earth, tidal with offline possibilities.

no buildquality issues for my C2.

After about three weeks with my Jolla C2 (5.0.0.70), I am going to return to my old phone. I was aware of buying a device that was marketed for developers. As I have been on LineageOS without MicroG, I am used to certain limitations, and, apart from Signal, I do not need anything that is not available in f-droid. So I gave it a try, but it turned out not to be reliable enough for me.

This is not meant to be a rant. I am just very disappointed because most, if not all, of the issues I found have been - from what I read in the forum - plaguing SalifishOS for years without being fixed, and many of them concern the basic functionality of a mobile phone. While these problems are serious for me and keep me from using the device as a daily driver, many of you may be able to live with them.

Below a quick summary of my impressions:

The good:

The looks of the GUI are awesome, and I really like the handling. It is great to have a real file-manager and to connect to the phone via USB or ssh without any hassle. There are many applications that I liked much better than their Android alternatives and that worked quite well. Signal also works out of the box without problems. So, the prospect of returning to the dreary Android GUI of LineageOS is quite saddening.

The bad:

The compass is dysfunctional. Yes, I calibrated it. Many times. In my point of view, having to calibrate it more than once means that something is broken by design. (I found a paper on different compass calibration methods. It describes a “pseudo-calibration”, which is probably what is implemented in SailfishOS.)

Navigation with android apps is not really possible because text-to-speech does not work. Yes, Pure Maps speaks, but navigation with it is problematic, e.g., when using it as a pedestrian because of the broken compass, mainly because it displays the current position at the lower edge of the screen. This is confusing when you are standing somewhere and know that the arrow on the map is pointing into some random direction. Moreover, when driving, speech is not routed through the car audio system but through the little speaker of the phone. The author of the program may have thought that this is a good idea, but could have implemented an easy way to switch the output.

Although these flaws came as surprises, I thought I could probably help to implement some improvements.

(I know. There may be workarounds for some of these problems, but not for all.)

The no-goes:

Both WLAN and 4G network connections break down approximately once a day. WLAN does not connect to my home network when I return although it is set to autoconnect. Bluetooth often requires a reset to connect to the car audio system or breaks down for no reason.

One morning, the alarm I had set did not go off. I had set a backup alarm and woke up in time. The alarm on the C2 went off one minute after its due time exactly when I unlocked the phone to check whether I had actually set the alarm.

The end call button does not work.

I just found in intressting video about the C2 as daily driver without Google services: https://youtu.be/5titW5dclwg?si=PbyCpslOHJ36pdWc

Thanks, interesting, but she barely scratched the surface. Waiting for a thorough test.

I just began to use my C2, about 3 weeks in now with very little time to properly tinker. running Tampella 5.0.0.72

I can confirm that battery is more than enough for a day out.

I think its important to point out that I never had any of the connectivity problems reported by achrist in his informative post.

I will test navigation and messaging next. Trying to stay native.

I haven’t found a usable version of Pure Maps yet and had little luck configuring Whisperfish.

Overall it’s a solid platform for basic functionality: it’s really a matter of seeing the glass half full or half empty given the current situation.

A competent bridge to the next gen Jolla Phone…

What problem(s) did you have?

You might find help here: Whisperfish - The unofficial SailfishOS Signal client

Thanks NIS, I’ll have a good look there, I knew of that thread: I just need some quiet time to try things out.

No rush: my C2 is not a daily driver yet.

I got to the point that I have the 3 main stores installed.

I’m fine and dandy with my C2 :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
