Feedback on Jolla C2

I agree on all points except for the battery life which I find quite decent. I can have it running for two days which is ok for me.
One additional positive is that it ‘may’ receive more love from Jolla’s as it is a reference device and so over time may improve more than it can for Xperia 10 III which is likely more or less stuck at current features.
One additional negative, which may be less valid in the future, is that I feel like it has more bugs currently. Personally I am suffering especially from a bug with wifi which is a pain as even though a wifi spot has gone far, for some reason, it stays connected but is not obviously. In that case, there is a battery drain too. I need to restart the phone usually (even if there could be another quick fix).

The display seems okay to me. Especially since watching video content is difficult anyway (native youtube app

The processor seems okay for sailfish apps, but android apps like Hello Chinese/ Duolingo are a bit slow.

In my case, the worst thing about C2 is a speaker. watching films on a phone is not a good idea but listening podcasts could be a fun. Not on such speaker unfortunately.

Display is very bad. Lack of colours. When I compare it with XA2 Plus display, you can notice right away who’s the clear winner. Not to speak with Amoled displays.

New to sailfish, but linux user since 10-15 years. Got my C2 a while ago, and I’ve used it as a “daily driver” for about a week. I must say I’m mostly pleasantly surprised. I didn’t set my expectations too high when I bought it. But so far it’s been smooth sailing.

I REALLY like the UI. When staying on native apps it is a real step up from android. It will get better with time and effort too. Android UI feels dated and clunky to me. Sailfish UI would really shine on a more responsive HW though.

I have had zero connectivity issues. Works perfectly with my Swedish provider (Halebop/telia). Bluetooth instantly connects to headsets, speakers, and a 2023 subaru infotainment system. Wifi reception is a bit weak though, and I’m trying to stay on 2.4GHz networks.

I have weird issue were I can connect to my nextcloud server for backups but my C2 refuses to sync contacts and calendars. Server is OLD though…

The phone is what it is. A simple, low end model. I think Jolla made the right call when they chose it. An expensive model with buggy software just wouldn’t sell any phones at all. Or quickly give them a bad rep. It is ok as a development platform and depending in your expectations it CAN be a daily driver.

And about the web browser. I think the developer deserves more credit for it. It is actually quite good. It badly needs an update AND adblock support though. But Jolla really should divert more resourses for this. A good browser is essential for this OS/phone. Preferably something gecko based. I generally don’t like to install apps for stuff that a browser could handle. AND on this OS apps are not usually available.

I wanted a linux phone, and got one. I’m confident it will get better with every update. Android seems to be heading in a different direction…

I’ve just checked my backup of the UI Themer app files, and these are the recommended icon sizes to choose from: 86, 108, 129, 151, 172.

I thought that I write a small review here of Jolla C2.

Phone works quite nicely and has been my main phone last two months. My previous phone for last two years was Samsung flip 5, so the change is quite big. I have had Jolla Phone original and Sony Xperia XA2. Both actually still works

C2 is rather large on size but you can fit in pockets. Though not very comfortable to use on one hand. Phone is well built and sturdy. But for future reference I think next Jolla phone could be foldable (clam shell style) or smaller like Sony’s phones are. Personally I do not mind pricier phone but there should always be affordable model to choose.

Sailfish OS 5 is stable and works fast enough. Could be little faster though. The Browser is bit slaggy and needs work to be faster and more compatible with website. Online banks tend to scream latest browser version. Basic application work quite nicely. Phone can be easily use in every day life.

Android app support works well with Threema Libre messaging app which I installed from F-Droid.

There is one major bug on system which has been reported on forum many times and that is Android App Support’s loss of data connection. I had it at start but it stays away if you turn the phone’s Wifi off. That way the Android app’s keep working on SIM-cards data without disconnecting.

C2’s camera is okay but needs some software modification to focus quicker and to get better pictures. Android app Open camera works much better but is not native Sailfish app.

Battery life is good even with Threema connection on. I get 2 - 3 days easily.

I can recommend the phone but hopefully we get some software updates on App Support’s wifi connection, Browser and Camera apps.

Receive my C2 day before yesterday and set it up, but the updates and downloads from the store are interminably slow. My Wifi is great as is my router speed, which was confirmed in the browser speed test.

I even tried updating from the command line, but that is just as slow if not timing out.

Is this a problem with the servers or what?

Any insights appreciated.

I read here many different opinions about C2.
Well i can understand both. If you are new to SailfishOS and you set you expectation not so high - it can feel rather good…
But if you mobile Linux Journey began 2009 with Nokia N900 and you used many different SailfishOS devices - i must say C2 is rather a step back for the Power User (like me). Sony Xperia 10 III what i used before got quite old. It worked good, but it got old. The battery is not more so good after 3 years, Android 11 in the AAS is small show stopper…
So after 3 years i was looking for something new. Of course i bought the C2. Of course i wanted to support Jolla and my bellowed OS, but i must say the Jolla C2 hardware was to weak for me to use it as a daily driver. Now i use Fairphone 5 as my daily driver, with it superior Hardware and very good Port quality it feels much more responsive than C2. I will keep the C2 for all my experiments, and hope that Jolla will bring something with better HW for the Power-Users.

I can remember when SailfishOS 3 came out together with Xperia XA2, XA2 Plus and XA2 Ultra. All 3 devices were Middle-class, but the hardware was in many points better than the C2 now.
Sorry Jolla, i love you, but the critics need to be said. In the hope next time it would be better.

I have another opinion.
A phone is a phone and a 200 bucks android phone would do the job
I dont want to spent 5/600 on a phone.
I would also like to remind that the c1 was an intex
All i want is a bit more reability.
Whenever i really need something like navigation quickly it fails me
And we do run with an iphone as backup :frowning:

In india i had to use volla with volla os.

Nowadays while routing, my car is 200m plus off the track, which cause not so funny side effects

Doubt that its pure maps fault.

As most people need reliable phone with good enough HW I think the 400e mark would be most suitable compromise. I think most people wouldn’t leave it because of price but it would have fingerprint scanner, better display, better GPS chip etc. It would be much more suitable as a daily driver and you could more easily (at least according to my knowledge) detect what problems are caused by poor HW and what is SW bug. I know Jolla has very limited resources and they probably can’t launch that many C-phones, while still needing platform to develop Sailfish further. But it can’t be 8 years before they launch ready flashed phone with fingerprint scanner and 5g. There is the demand but I can’t say if they have resources to meet it.

I agree here, the phone shouldn’t always cost 5/6/700,- EUR/$
My backup phone is Motorola G 5G (Kiev) with //eOS from 2020. It costs 230,- EUR when it was new.

  • Resolution 1080 x 2400 pixels
  • NFC
  • Fingerprint
  • 5G
  • 5000mAh Battery

Middle-class Phone.230 EUR. 100,- EUR for SailfishOS Licence. = 330 EUR. Everybody is happy! That is what i mean. There are plenty of such middle-class phones with unlockable boot-loaders, with AOSP/LineageOS sources. Many of them could be ported to SailfishOS.
What i like on Fairphone is:

  • Fair Production
  • European company
  • Repairability
  • Open for all Operating Systems
  • Good community
  • Alredy very good Coomunity Port out

Jolla shares the same values and this to things should belong together.
And for such collaboration i am willing to pay more than for the 08/15 middle-class phone.

I would buy every phone, which Jolla would bring out. Because i want to support them. I want see this company living. But that doesn’t mean that i would be happy with every product, Jolla sells.

I have made a returnshipment to the Jollaboys because I have a problem with my C2. The package is ready for pickup since the 3rd of this month (July) and is eligible for pickup until coming Monday (July 7th).
I hope the Jollaboys will make the pickup on Monday before the package is returned to me without them having a look into my problem.
Have sent multiple mail messages to the known mail address and also remarks in my Zendesk ticket, but all of them haven been unanswered and/or no reaction whatsoever.
@rainemak Could you be of any assistance in this matter?
Keeping fingers crossed.

They are on a summer break until August, so I wouldn’t be holding my breath for anyone to pick up your package in time. Bit strange no-one mentioned this in the Zendesk-communication when they asked you to send the phone back to them…

Thank you for your reaction avhakola. And yes it is very odd them not mentioning being on summer break till August :frowning_with_open_mouth:
Now I am hoping that the package will be returned to me if t is not picked up. Return to address is visible on the package so I expect that not to be a problem.

It is picked up now.
