Feedback on Jolla C2

there is a file browser, it is only hard to find: go to settings - disk space - tap one volume - use pulley to open file manager

There is also “File Browser” in Jolla’s shop.

I found that one by accident. It is really nice, once you find it
The “File Browser” found in the Jolla shop is not quite as nice.

Maybe this can explain some of the Mail app issues ( @Nightwalker , @MP_20052013 ) have been reporting in this thread as well.
I’m running my own mail server, and it looks as though the C2’s Mail app is configured to use the older Login method, whereas the Mail app on my Xperia 10 III is using the Plain method.

Xperia 10 III (SFOS 5.0.0.67)

C2 (SFOS 5.0.0.67)

What triggered me to look into this? Well; the C2 didn’t want to connect at all until I enabled the older Login method on Dovecot:

There was me thinking I would migrate from my damaged phone in a jiffy, just the backup restore, the password and then…

edit: Just now saw @nephros 's post, he’s got a solution even, phew! :hugs:
edit 2: Ah that fixes Plain on IMAP, not yet on SMTP, haven’t managed to figure that one out yet; keeping Login method enabled for now for sending mail

Maybe you can use ag-tool to set the smtp/authentication property - not sure.

Or just enter everything in the settings app again, maybe something didn’t stick frim restoring.

I do experience this situation often lately:

C2 seams to be running well, mobile network no wifi.
I should receive a call, caller gets forwarded to mailbox. I get no system notification but a missed call SMS from the provider.
Then i call back (which works) but after that call AAS is offline.
This really is anoying as it happens relatively often. Provider is Telekom.de

I think some componen is crashing here (OOM?).
This time I observed the incoming call crashing Bluetooth first, then the phone started ringing. After the call, however, internet was gone in AAS (but not on the “Sailfish”-Side.)

Not sure how much it is of use for what you want to do with the file browser, but there is a simple file browser hidden in Settings > Storage > User data > Pulley menu > File manager.

I don’t understand why this file browser is not exposed in the app drawer as a regular app.

I bought a C2 much recently, and experienced no particular problem with the transfer from my Xa2 to the C2. Everything seems to work properly.

The screen of the C2 displays 5 smaller icons on a row. Would it be possible to draw only 4 slighly larger icons as it ws the case on the Xa2. Does a config file exist that describe the screen layout ?

Have a good day

there was a patch to set the layout, but I think it is not working on SFOS 5 (yet?)
Edit: it is called launcher combined patch [Fork]

Thank you. It seems, the patch was adapted to conform the 5.0.55 version. I will give a try.

I bought and got recently my Jolla C2. I followed instructions and I have to say everything went fine. I think Jolla made lots of improvements because there is no real issues in my device so far. I have to say this works better than my Sony Xperia 10 II so far.

Is it better then the Sony Xperia 10 III yet?

To change the number of icons in a row and their size, set /desktop/sailfish/silica/icon_size_launcher to a custom value. On my XA2, 151 gets me 5 icons on a row, while 182 gets me back to 4 icons per row.

You can set and reset the value with dconf at the command line after enabling developer mode in Settings. You need to restart the home screen after every change to see it in effect.

@dumol how can i control the actual value of icon_size_launcher ? I tried that way:
Dconf read /desktop/…/icon_size_launcher
But i don’t get an answer nor an error message. Do you maybe know where are the text files containing these values are located ?

There’s nothing there by default. Write something first.

To get back to the default, use the reset option.

Thank you @dumol, with 121 , i got back the feeling of my Xa2. So, to summerize, to get 4 larger icons rather than 5 smaller on my C2 screen i opened a terminal in devel-su mode and entered
dconf write /desktop/sailfish/silica/icon_size_launcher 121
And restarted my phone.
Not sure whether the unit of this number is in pixel or a % of the default size. I think with 100 you reset the display to 5 small default icons of the C2.
151 lead to 4 large icons filling almost completly the row and thus not beautiful.
121 was for me a good trade off.
Thanks you again

You’re welcome! Glad the command was helpful for you… ;-]

You don’t need to run it with devel-su though. And you don’t need to restart the phone, restarting the home screen is enough for this.

IMHO Jolla C2 is better than Xperia 10 III only in 3 cases:

  • Official SailfishOS Firmware, so bootloader is not “unlocked”
  • 8GB RAM instead (4 or 6) on Xperia 10 III
  • Android 13 AAS instead 11 on Xperia 10 III

In all other specs Jolla C2 is not a upgrade or direct replacement for Xperia 10 III.
I tried to use C2 as my daily driver and found this shortcomings:

  • No 5G
  • No Fingerprint Reader
  • No NFC
  • Slow CPU (Much slower than Xperia 10 III)
  • Very bad display. Low Resolution and IPS instead of OLED
  • Bad battery life.

Now i use Jolla C2 as my tinker-device. I play and test all the SailfishOS hacks on it.
My daily driver is Fairphone FP5, which is unfortunately not an official Jolla Device - so no official Android App Support.

Update: Need to admit that i fully understand why Jolla has choosen Reeder S19mps as community device. They have not very much options, Sony 10 IV and V are still not ready and they need a plattform to develop on.
But after Xperia 10 III we need something with better specs and not a downgrade.
For SailfishOS Beginner - Jolla C2 might be a good point to start with, but for me personally its donwngrade.

  • No 5G - is bad
  • No Fingerprint Reader - no factor for me
  • No NFC - no factor for me
  • Slow CPU - is bad
  • Very bad display - is bad
  • Bad battery life - is very bad
It’s a pass then for me :frowning:
