I haven’t turned off the android support yet and noticed some strange things.
I suddenly got the notification about an unused app. Camera. If the camera is integrated in Sailfish and used frequently, how can android support say it is an unused app?
Also I got the strange thing happening once. I always turn off internet connection (mobile and wifi) if I don’t need it anymore. All apps were already closed when turning them off. Then I opened gallery and browsed through foto’s, when I suddenly got the notification the phone had no internet connection. The notification you get when you open browser for instance and internet is turned off.
Are there hidden apps in the background that make connection with internet?
And the email app does not function as it should on the C2. I can receive emails, but not send emails. I tried different configurations, but nothing works.
This is what I don’t like about the current state of my C2:
The GPS is horrible. It takes two or more minutes to find satellites outdoors on a cloudy day, and the fallback to WiFi and cellular positioning does not seem to work at all, making indoor use of dating apps like Grindr impossible. I downloaded the positioning packages from the Jolla store, but I read somewhere that the Mozilla positioning services it relies on were discontinued in 2024. This is a big no-go.
Android apps seem sluggish. Scrolling in Firefox and the Reddit app stutters; it’s not as fluid as in the stock browser on a simple website. I have a Samsung S24 Ultra for comparison, so maybe the CPU/GPU in this phone is too slow for smooth performance.
The permanent Android back button at the bottom is annoying. I wish there was an option to hide it and use a “swipe from the bottom” gesture to make it visible temporarily (which would override the Sailfish app drawer gesture, for sure).
If you don’t know that you must tap the version number in Android support settings multiple times, one will never find the Android settings to change font and screen size for Android apps - similar thing with the About Sailfish and debugger page. What else is hidden from me?
DRM-protected content using Widevine (Android) or native (stock browser on orf.at/live) does not work at all, which is, unfortunately, very widespread nowadays. This is another big no-go.
MicroG should be offered during the OOBE, in parallel to Aurora and F-Droid.
Something should be done to make Android apps believe they were installed from the Play Store, even though one actually used Aurora (all Austrian banking apps refuse to run because of this, besides of the classic root-check).
The numpad on the lock screen could be bigger; offering a pattern unlock instead would be nice.
There is no file browser installed by default.
The android_storage subfolder for Android apps is not explained; symbolic links to the Sailfish user folder would be better than actual folders.
I used my S24’s contact app (Samsung) to export my contacts. The VCF file couldn’t be imported into Sailfish, with no information on why; it just fails with a generic error.
Adding a picture (or attempting so) via contacts app to an existing contact opens an empty page when I click the image square. Might be because I didn’t store a single image on my phone yet. Could tell me where to store images or offer a camera button as well. Images added ar enot shown in the contacts list. would be nice to have the image in the list, and if there is no image, a placeholder with capital letters of the first and last name.
I imported an ICS file containing birthdays into the “private” calendar but actually wanted to import it into my Nextcloud account calendar (I added the account in settings prior) to have everything in sync. When I tried to import the same file again to Nextcloud, the calendar app tells me the entries are duplicates and throws a generic error when continuing.
ICS files can only be imported by opening them via a file browser. There is no import/export option within the calendar app itself.
I haven’t figured out yet how to create a custom wallpaper/ambience. I found an old thread which tells me it should be square, but gave up on finding information how to apply it.
When setting a custom ringtone, etc., the file browser expects the files in /home/Music. I initially put them in /home/Ringtones (a custom folder) because I wanted to keep them away from my music. There is no hint or information in the settings app on where to place them, they just don’t show up and I cannot select a custom folder either.
Keyboard: Text prediction, once available on N9 and older Sailfish, is missing. I also wish there was a setting to define the keyboard size, add a numbers row on top and have special characters available via long-press on standard keys, similar to Gboard.
Although supported by my provider, Spusu (Austria), registration for 4G VoLTE doesn’t work. Radio button flashes, but that’s it.
When configuring network/WiFi one can only choose to manually set IP AND DNS. Useless for public hotspots, I don’t know the correct IP configuration, but would love to use Adguard DNS at all times. Please allow configuring them separately. Also allow setting a custom DNS when using cellular network. I don’t want to use the DNS servers from my provider, but Adguard.
It seems the recent Let’s Encrypt root and intermediate CAs are missing by default (the stock browser complains that my site is unsafe at https://veryold.retrospace.net but doesn’t tell me exactly why).
No-brainer: Keep the integrated browser up-to-date and add an uBlock support. Surfing without such a blocker is a mess, especially on such a slow phone. I read something that you ever-since rewrite the Firefox code to a different coding language and fall behind because of your limited resources, is this rewriting really necessary?
Using Jolla C2, newest update installed.
GSM-Codes do not seem to work, or irregularly. I’ve managed to install a unconditional transfer of calls (**21…#), but was not unable to check the status or deactivate the transfer. (##21#, #21#, ##002#, #002#, all to no avail). No item in the GUI found.
It is terrbile not to be able to manage the calls. I had to put the SIM back into my old android phone.
Am I doing something wrong or is the phone unable to complete such a basic task in a regular manner?
Try opening the Settings app (orange icon with cogwheels), swipe to the Apps tab, tap Phone icon. There are some settings for call forwarding and barring.
I’d agree that it’s a bit hard to find until you have gotten used it, especially since many 3rd party apps manage settings via their own menus rather than through the global Settings app. But I can also see why Jolla has chosen to do it this way, as it keeps apps “cleaner”.
Thanks for the fix and guidance through the jungle.
That does not answer the question though why GSM-codes sometimes work and mostly don’t. That question is up to the developers.
Right. I sort of gave up on those codes already when moving from land line to GSM. There seemed to be some extra #'s and *'s added just for fun - breaking the language - and I got the impression that support was spotty at best anyway…
I understand that you report these here as general feedback on the C2, which is fine.
To resolve your issues, I’d suggest opening separate support/bug report threads. It would be of general interest to improve imports, or at least throw meaningful error messages. Having these issues in threads of their own would also help other members find them.
For the problem with duplicate entries, @dcaliste may be able to help you clean up you local calendar so you can import them again. (I have dabbled with the calendar db, but I’m not confident enough to guide you.)
It’s not so much a re-write into a new language as adapting the ever-evolving Firefox to SFOS GUI and infrastructure.
Not arguing they shouldn’t work in SFOS as well. I’m just having a “grumpy old man” moment, remembering my frustration with how those codes got mangled in gsm.
I’m completely new to SFOS and the C2 is my first device running it. My thoughts on the C2 are:
All in all and after you get used to the UI it’s a very pleasent experience. I really like how apps are consistently integrated into the Look & Feel and menu handling of the OS.
If you are new to SFOS it’s quite confusing, that there’s the App Store with few apps. Then you have to discover, there’s another source: OpenRepos. And wait, another one: Chum! Another one I haven’t discovered, yet?
Drawbacks are:
I avoid apps wherever possible and use the browser. That’s a habit back from Android times. Depending mainly on the browser, having an outdated one and no alternative is hardly acceptable (just like on UT), since there are sites you just can’t visit or even log on to.
Not a single reliable messenger for any protocol. (UT has at least Teleports as Telegram messenger maintained by the OS developers). But here is almost any app from any repository outdated or not working as expected or both.
No video recording
And finally I’d like to say, that I don’t want to use Android apps. I use Linux phones to avoid exactly that. If I have to use Android apps, an OS like Graphene or Volla with F-Droid is way more suitable IMHO…
If I said something wrong or not true, I apologize, as I said, I’m quite new to SFOS
Browser - there’s Angelfish in the Chum. It’s not as well integrated as the native one, but it’s built on Chromium and works well, IMHO.
Messengers - there are several Telegram apps (Fernschreiber and Yottagram, to name a few), there’s Whisperfish for Signal, and there’s even an app for Matrix (although I had forgotten its name since I don’t use Matrix), there’s even a cool app for Reddit called Quickddit.
Hopefully, the video recording will get updated in the future.
Yeah, SFOS has lots of drawbacks, but (again, IMHO) it’s the most useful and stable Linux experience you can get on a phone, and it can be a daily driver for many people (with the use of some Android apps, which it seems you’re not particularly interested in).
angelfish is only visible in chum when you set os version 4.6 and then it fails to install because a package containing libicuum.so.68()64bit cannot be found, a broken dependency. seems 5.0 has libicuum.so.70.1 and a symbolic link using lm doesnt help.
I can’t find Angelfish in Chum, at least not using the Chum GUI. But it should be there, shouldn’t it?
Oh that’s why…
Yes, I even have Yottagram installed. I forgot to mention, that I was aiming on Matrix and XMPP clients.
I tried Quickddit back on UT, but since it’s quite usable in the browser, I prefer that.
The best Matrix client for me right now is Sailtrix, though it has a heavy encryption/decryption problem I asked about here already.
