Feedback on Jolla C2

Indeed that is good news - Jolla has clearly done the right thing and what they are obliged to do under EU law.

It does sound as though there might be a a while to wait as they don’t appear to have a workable fix to the problem yet

but better that than more failed phones.

I understand that it is not easy to communicate in an unexpected, unclear situation.

It would be helpfull, however, if Jolla would publicly acknowledge the problem without providing a solution but indicating what they attempt to do, for instance: waiting for returned phones, analyzing the problem and only then searching for a solution

I’ve just looked on my X10 III (on the latest 4.6) and I can’t find the Factory Reset option in Settings either. I’m sure it always used to be there - Jolla used to advise re-flashing rather than return to factory settings (as the latter would take the phone way back in releases if you’d done OTA updates, and then you’d have to do all those OTA updates again).

Am I looking in the wrong place, or has Jolla now removed this option in recent releases?

This is also the case for me:

Still happy with my XZ2 Compact Community-Port i have no Problem in waiting longer if they are able to flash it with a newer Version, which prevents this Bug.

Assuming that the problem (a.k.a. THE BUG) is a software/encryption one and that it can be solved by just flashing the phone with an upgraded version (newer than 5.0.0.21).

  • What is the situation for the ones with a working C2 from scratch? Can a future OTA update provide the same “low-level” effect as if the phone had been freshly flashed?
  • When the factory reset feature is introduced, to which version will the device jump back? If it jumps back to the 5.0.0.5, I would be scared to dead to perform such reset…

You are right…this feature used to be the last in the settings menu with a big X and in my 10 III is also gone.

If I am not mistaken, the factory reset option was removed a while ago (at least from Xperia 10 ii support on)

When the factory reset feature is introduced, to which version will the device jump back? If it jumps back to the 5.0.0.5, I would be scared to dead to perform such reset…

So they should be flashed to a later failsafe Verson in this case.

Removing this feature may be feasible (and not a big issue) for a phone for which you have flashing images available. But for the C2…

I seem to remember that was said by the British Prime Minister Edward Heath at a dinner reception in 10 Downing Street in the early 1970’s (yes, I am that old!) as more of a witticism than anything else, the subtext being think carefully before you do say anything as words have real consequences in diplomacy.

Nevertheless, its always a good idea to think before you speak, especially for us lawyers

Presumably any re-flashing or updating firmware would also involve unlocking the C2s boot loader (I had to do that with my XA2, XA2 Plus, Xperia 10 iii)? Maybe that isn’t supported or would void any warranty provided by Jolla/Reeder?

What bothers me after some use of the C2 is the onscreen keyboards. My hands are not small, but in landscape, it is hard to reach the keys in the middle of the screen. There should be an option to make the onscreen-keyboards smaller with a large gap in the middle in landscape, and maybe also to make it smaller and move it to the lower right edge for usage with one hand in portrait mode.

Scaling the onboard-Keyboard together with the rest of the screen makes no sense on such a large device.
EDIT: I found the option to split the keyboard in Landscape mode, that helps a lot, but I still think that there is potential to gain more screen space with a more compact keyboard. Almost 50% of the tablet is used up by the keyboard in landscape

Don’t forget Jolla C2 is Mediatek, not Qualcomm like Sony Xperias.
So flashing with fastboot is not possible. The devices are flashed with Mediatek’s MTK sp_flashtool.
Planet Communicators were also Mediatek, what was in many cases - pain in the ass…

Is then different to set the C2 in “flashing/recovery mode”? I googled a bit and did not find a way similar to the fastboot one.

No it is Unisoc.

But it worked for me oob

oh, thanks for the clarification. i read somewhere Reader S19 Max Pro S is Mediatek

Kitartás. I’m half Hungarian and I’m curious how people in Hungary get to know about sailfish. Was the Nokia n9 sold in Hungary?

That exists, use split keyboard. Settings/Keybard → enable split keyboard, or so
(in german: Einstellungen/Texteingabe → Aufteilen…erlauben)

You’re in luck! Open Settings app, goto Text input, then enable Allow split keyboard...
