I was able to test older versions of SailfishOS (oldest I tried was 4.3.0.15) and still had the issue, so it is likely not caused by an upgrade.
The only thing I know has changed is my SIM card: I switched from a SIM card without VoLTE support to a SIM card with VoLTE support (same operator). Since disabling 4G helps with the issue, perhaps this is linked.
I started my investigation by looking at the logs of ofono with 4G enabled and with 2G. There are much more logs with 4G.
The logs with 4G contains a lot of these:
Can't parse modem-handled proactive command
I tried with the most recent ofono from upstream and it cannot parse the input either, so Iām assuming the data is just plain wrong.
Does any of you have this error in their ofono logs?
Could you please tell me how frequent you see lines added to the ofono logs while the phone is not in use with 4G enabled (and tell me if you have the battery drain issue or not)?
(With 4G enabled, I have a few dozens lines every minute, while with 2G, it I can see 10-20 minutes between 2 log lines.)
Iām not sure yet where the input comes from and if we have control over it, but Iāll continue my investigation.
This just got really annoying. Problem with this battery drain on Xa2 models exists since 4.4.0.72 (4.4.0.68 in my case was the last ok state).
Recently I was planning to completly refresh my 10 III so I needed a backup phone so I dusted off my old trusty XA2. Flashed it with 5.0.0.62. I did remember about the battery drain problem but assumed that it is already relic of the past. As it turned out it isnātā¦
Lipstic continue to destroy battery life running about 10-12% of cup all the time even when itās not doing anything. Iām almost completly sure that problem is caused by lipstic as on 10 III the same process sits lower than 1% of cpu.
I couldnāt really get it to work properly. Only workaround that I know of, and this is at least abnormal - is to flash the device to 4.4.0.68 and go through all the updates up until the last release. Now lipstic sits at 1-2% of cpu usage.
I also see that some reported different causes with different/no solutions yet. In my case it is relatively easy to get it working properly but it seems like Jolla isnāt really give that much to old devices. Which considering their current state is understandable, but shouldnāt be like this.
OFFTOP WARNING
I returned my C2 after few weeks because jolla started project with completly obsolete phone when they have XA2 platforms almost figured out. By the way, not considering battery drain XA2 performs much better than C2. This I cannot understand.
I bought lately an Xperia XA2, before learning the battery drain issue with the latest SFOS version. It seems that Jolla only offers the latest versions to download. Would it be possible for you to share your initial XA2 flash image, in order to be able to setup mine under the version 4.4 and avoid this issue ?
HI, I do see to have in my archive this directory: Jolla-3.2.1.20-i4113-0.0.4.16 - would this help you?
As a sidenote, I have just reinstalled this phone to the latest Sailfish v5, and itās only connected to Wifi, without any services running. It loses about 1% per hour, which to me seems reasonable.
FWIW, the drain-issue still is present on the current release, but somewhat less than earlier versions (and my own first post here mentions v3.4 as well, so you probably wonāt be better off with anything in the 4.x range)
Itās manageable. Usually thereās no problem, but once in a while you simply notice that the battery is more empty than anticipated. Restart lipstick using the utils app, and itās fine again.
When I have 4G enabled, the drain is much worse. I donāt think thatās because of Sailfish tho.
Fwiw, Iām still using the XA2 as daily driver since end 2018, with all its warts. I am looking forward to the new Jolla phone, which I of course pre-ordered.
Astonishing how differences can exist between devices.
We have 4 XA2 here, and none has battery consumption problems.
Battery consumption in mA/h is the most reliable indicator IMHO, as it can indicate battery drain independently of the battery health.
Using SystemDataScope app, I can see that my XA2 consumption is around 20-25 MA/h when in flight mode.
The rest of the time doesnāt say much as it is highly dependent of the usage.
Huh weird. Did you reflash your phones at any point? Iāve flashed once, back in 2018, and since then always performed an update. There may be some residual problems because of that. Also, I flashed the āv19ā (I think; it was the newer version then) base version, which in retrospect might not be that great; using 5GHz WLAN is known to suck because of that, which I can confirm.
Oh yes, I flashed many times. But no more since perhaps 2-3 updates.
But Iād advise to rsync the home folder and reflash.
IIRC, drivers we can use are either v16 or v17.
I used v16.
I must say that, although a bit slow, the XA2 works beautifully well IMO.
Sorry, I thought you would give it a try and see how it goes And FYI, the phone is on my desk at the office, with Wifi Connection only, and lost only 17% in 24hours.
I gave it a try and canāt get the phone boot. Iāve replaced the sony binary package by the one for my phone, and made an other test with the hybris-boot and vendor images, but I end up being either stuck on the sony screen or on a black screen after the sony one.
I havenāt made an attempt with your sony binary packages, Iām not sure I wouldnāt brick my phone with it.
