3.5mm JACK on new Jolla Phone

Fairphone has earbuds with replaceable batteries…

You know that’s rarity right?

Unfortunately, BT of C2 is quite unusable. Loss of signal frequently happens and the range is very limited. At least for me it’s not possible to connect to my UE Megaboom and Hyperboom, if it’s more than 2m away from my Jolla C2. On the other hand, the amplfication is very bad and I have to open the volume to the max to make it usable.
That’s why I really would prefer a 3.5mm Jack for the new Jolla. But since that doesn’t seem possible, I will have to invest in a decent USB-C adapter with a good DAC :frowning:

I sometimes play audio into my tascam (24 channel) porta studio. Ananlog inputs.

Get the apple dong (usb-c 3.5mm dongle), it’s cheapest with best price to performance ratio, basically blind buy, if you don’t need anything super special it does the job

Ah, I didn’t think I’d go further than replacing the sadly no longer in one piece jack, but maybe … Pictured Sennheiser HD25s next to 1920s C. Brandes ‘Superior’ headphones without USB-C.

Which USB-C adapter do you recomend?

Get the dong, there’s nothing else xd

I’m under the obviously mistaken impression that a dong is a sex toy. What IS the dong you speak of?
EDIT: ok, an apple usb-c audio adapter.

EDIT: there IS a braided cable on Amazon.de called Basesailor which does sound attractive.

That’s the joke but trust me, in audio community, we refer to the appple’s 3.5mm usb-c adapter as apple dong (short for dongle)

Which Audio community? I’ve been part of numerous audio communities in numerous countries over the span of 30+ years. We always called a dong, a dong  EDIT: Passive or DAC?

Passive wouldn’t work as it’s device specific, apple’s usb-c 3.5mm dong is DAC+AMP, i use it all over the house, i even put one in my laptop

Ok, cool. But that isn’t the 9.99 Euro unit is it? If it is, it’s not expensive. I stopped buying apple gear 20 years ago, so I’m out of touch.

That’s the best part, it is! It’s so inexpensive and so good. Trust me I hate apple as much as the next guy but the dongle is king in it’s class, there’s nothing cheaper and nothing in this price point compares.

Ok, sold. I might even hack one into a laptop, too

Since the Jack on my XA2 has connection issues after seven years i bought a good USB DAC for christmas(Fosi Audio DS2). While it does sound great and works I’m not happy with it:

  • Battery life is worse
  • It’s clunky in your pocket
  • I get frequent connection drops (even when its just lying on the table) which of course pauses playback, very annoying, I have yet to find out why

So +1 for an option for a 3,5mm jack I guess

To the points mentioned, one could also add the (presumably extremely low) risk of explosion/ignition. https://www.atsb.gov.au/media/news-items/2017/battery-explosion-mid-flight

Tldr… but BT has latency, so for live performances it is necessairy!

I have three reasons to prefer an analog audio jack:

  • Compatibility with analog audio gear
  • Reliability (no batteries that run out/no interference from wifi or other devices)
  • Power consumption

Mine contain knock-off Grado speakers. Fun project - do not recommend the result.

I have Veclan Odyssey HD - and it is great (if you can stomach chi-fi and the clearly Sennheiser-like logo).
They don’t seem available currently - and as far as i understand it is “only” a nice implementation of what basically everyone uses.
