Not just that, the bandwith is SEVERELY limited. The best you can do is use LDAC which sfos does not support so you’re stuck with AAC which SUCKS ASS
It doesn’t, because DAC is built into SoC. Only dummies like LG put in custom dacs and then nobody can port sfos because it’s custom as hell and nothing works
Ok.
So:
-BT is crap (AAC only + the rest of disavantages listed above + one advantage (no cable))
-USB DAC is currently badly supported in SFOS (to be verified/confirmed).
-Jack is not planned as the phone is full.
But
The SOC has a DAC.
I can’t wait to grab my soldering iron and solder wire, and solder a jack onto the SOC.
I’m not a dev, but l can offer this service for free ![]()
Even more!
Here is an example of one of the oldest phone’s earphone (magnet): Bell’s one, 1876.
If someone has the skill, maybe he should be already thinking about an “audiophile TOH” with 3.5mm and whatever else.
Let’s be realistic, TOH is probably coming to the device.
Either Jolla had already that in mind and used it to boost sales, or it we will get close enough for them to do so, or they will extent the campaign again (we are already in ~3 months campaign compared to 1).
So if anyone wants it, better start working on it because if J1 tells us anything it’s that Jolla will give us colored plastic back covers ![]()
The (only) codec that SFOS can actually use, is of extremely low quality. High quality ones exist, but SF does not actually support them. You can buy $500 Sony BT, but it will use $2 encoding with SFOS.
A lot of people now have never heard decent quality audio. My sons have always used BT headsets, whose quality is abysmal, and they simply have no idea it can be different. I would suggest that a lot of the people saying BT is fine, are like the proverbial boiled frog who have been well stewed by “big tech”
Tried one on my X10III - nothing. People are suggesting adaptors when they probably won’t work in SFOS.
The argument that there is some significant technical problem with a 3.5mm jack is really BS. Modern phones are physically huge, there is a ton of space. From Jolla’s p.o.v. they need to find an existing phone design to put a badge on, and the industry has largely dropped them.
Bluetooth headphones are one thing. Convenience. They’re not better than wired, they’re not even on par, but they’re damn convenient.
As to quality, AAC quality is on par with 2005 mp3 players.
They already stated you can add jack as a TOH
Then there are people like “I can’t hear a difference”, which unless you’re partially deaf is blatantly incorrect and so easily proven false that it’s laughable lol. And we’re not talking about “audiophile” $50000 bullshit here
Sure, the separate in-ear type, but full sized headphones you will be able to replace the battery in. This is not really any more off limits to normies than swapping a connector on your wired stuff.
Good points on codec and mic - those need attention.
Shite codec and shite amplification can be heard by anyone.
Pictured; 1930s headphones with USB-C.
USB DAC works just fine and it worked fine back in 2015 on my moto g2 and still does. Maybe it doesn’t switch for calls (idk) but for music it’s perfectly fine. Slap apple usb-c 3.5mm dong and be done with it
But yeah lack of 3.5mm is purely bullshit, there’s no excuse not to have it other than saving money/laziness. You could fit 3.5mm in jolla phone 1 which was much smaller but fitting one into jolla phone 2 is now an issue? yeah bullshit
Frankly, I believed what they said. At least, I’m not sure we can know/judge until we see the schematics or open the phone.
I’m very grateful SFOS exists and am not sure if they were lazy/venal, Jolla would have survived.
We can’t judge so quickly IMHO.
Perhaps they took the measure of jack traction too late and couldn’t find a way back. Maybe.
Perhaps they could have reduced battery size for a jack.
We are charging it every day anyway, aren’t we?
Anyway, jack or not, as we now know an USB-DAC-Jack adapter works, for me it’s very ok the way it is.
that explain a lot
(no offense)
in short,
*we have wired hifi headphones or home audio amplifiers, or cars without bluetooth, or new cars supporting only android or apple!
- bt transition drains more battery because of encoding and then powering bt antenna
- batteries in headphones get drained in time when you want to listen and not charge…
- batteries in headphones will die sooner or later and you can trash headphones or pay for service replacement same or higher price as for the new ones…
not much vendors these days provide analog output on usb-c, instead you must use DAC usb-c → jack and the quality of these dongles is mostly tragic
- btw i am not sure if SFOS detect usb-c dac and route sound to the dongle …
anyway if the masses can listen music from phone loadspeaker and they are happy, they are happy even with shitty bt headphones… it is hard to live in this age where standards for quality are defined for the deaf people ![]()
it is just sad situation with jp-2 for most people as it is step back with no jack out… i still use jp-1 with sfos1.1.7.29 because it is still fine phone for my needs because im not person who has glued phone to hands 24/7 … (also streaming radio works without lags - they messed it in sf2 or sf3 Jolla Mediaplayer: Stuttering Internetradio … ) well it has good DAC and was much better than many generations of iphones what i compared on same headphones and same flac songs…
It provides you with freedom, which ppl. like ya don’t care of.
Did you try this to get the USB DAC run?
It worked on Xperia 10 iii and also Volla Quintus phone nicely
no i didn’t try, because it was not my phone and i switched back to 3.5mm earphones, because that way i can use them on ipods too.
I was for a long time a 3.5mm Jack fan. But this has changed a bit. Yes, there are some advantages. But there are as well downsides. The biggest for me, is that at some point the connection usually starts to get worse. Not if it is just plugged in and nothing is movig. But I usually have the phoe somewhere in my trousers or pocket in my jacket and then there is always movement. and this leads after a while to distortion sounds, whenever there is some movement on the cable. I had this problem with different phones from different manufacturers. And this drove me to BT headphones. At home I anyway use a proper hifi system.
Even on Android USB to jack converters have been a pain in the ass for me, some working, some not, some being flaky.
I dunno, fucking around with Bluetooth is not convenient to me.
Also it’s an extra attack vector (if one has Bluetooth off otherwise, which I do), so there’s another reason for the OP.
You can always use Bluetooth even if the phone has a jack? Putting it in your trousers or somewhere where will be force on the plug so it’ll degrade is, ehhh…
That’s nothing new. I know that the wear of the jack is my fault. I know that I can use BT besides a Headphone Jack. Anyway times changes and we have to accept it. I still badly miss a IR DIode in the phone. I miss a nice keyboard as well. But it is 2026 now and I can’t change it.
That doesn’t alone count for moblie phones. I miss times without social media and times where people tended to be nice to each other. Times where the internet was free and open…
I could make a endless list. I fear I’m getting old. ![]()
There were some hacks to add an IR LED to phones.
I believe they had to be plugged into … the jack …oh sorry! ![]()
