Xperia Tama port: 4.3.0.12 release

waydroid is FAR superior to aliendalvik. its SO much faster, its open, and its more configurable/customizable.

only cons so far:

  • no bluetooth passthrough
  • battery says 85% forever
  • closing the lipstick-window closes the android session (this is the best advantage of aliendalvik)
  • only 1 lipstick-window (this is the second-best advantage of aliendalvik)
  • cannot use GPS in google maps and SFOS apps at the same time
  • am start-activity starts all intents in freeform windowingMode for some reason??! i CANNOT figure out why, and no workaround ive tried has helped

aosp 12 is released.

However, (in my experience), afyer running Waydroid for a little while, the phone starts suffering with lag/slowdown, until stopping Waydroid. Not thw case with AD…

“only cons so far:”
Sorry, but the cons are “only” limiting waydroid to something to use as a last resort, e.g. in case all other options fail, and disqualifying it as a daily driver - at least if I got them right:
I understood there is only one Android app possible at a time, with no background process? So no way to run e.g. Whatsapp and Threema simultaneously in the background?
I don’t see any advantage except for it is FOSS.

I only wonder if it’s possible to connect a Bluetooth-dongle via USB and use it in Waydroid (or maybe Aliendalvik).
Does Waydroid hide root from Android apps as well, which is rather important for some streaming or banking apps.

If you use waydroid-runner, you get a SFOS window with Android session in it. Inside that session you can run many apps. As long as that waydroid-runner window is up, all should work. Close the window, Android session is shut down.

Alternative is to use waydroid session separately from the runner. There were some issues that it was causing due to interaction with Lipstick. Those are not fixed to my knowledge and I don’t remember the details anymore.

yesterday, i was driving to rehearsal with google maps navigating in a floating window while listening to CoolReader TTS service read a book to me, when i received a matrix notification from Element IM.

its a full android environment, including multi-window/split-screen/freeform support, background processes, launcher/home app with widgets, topbar, developer-mode, etc.

nothing ‘hides’ root. waydroid is 100% opensource. banking apps may or may not work, but i do plenty of things as root on android and so far, they all work. the following things, a few of which require root, work:

  • am start-foreground-service, am broadcast
  • am start (NOTE: every activity started this way starts in freeform window mode and i STILL havent fixed it)
  • forwarding adb to my laptop using an ssh tunnel
  • adb backup com.package.name
  • get/set props
  • games that require obb files (KingdomTwoCrowns)
  • TTS/readAloud services
  • setting default apps (bromite, lawnchair)
  • making SFOS launchers for apps that start waydroid, wait for the ui to start, and then call am start

waydroid-on-tama is not perfect, and aliendalvik8-on-xa2 DOES have a few advantages over it, but waydroid-on-tama is, on balance, already WayBetter than aliendalvik8

You already said that, but - what is better then? And does Waydroid hide root from e.g. banking apps not willing to run on rooted devices?
And: what in particular is bad in AD? Except for missing Bluetooth (which Waydroid doesn’t feature as well)? I think not even access to contacts is currently working in Waydroid…

Thank you for the information. It is the only disadvantage of the XZ2c.No headphone jack. Can you paste a name/link to the Headphone-and-charging device you used? I use a ES100 MK2 to have my headphone jack back because I almost use my headset for every call I make.

Are you and your team planning to release a tama version for 4.3.0.15 or are you just going directly to 4.4.?

I am usually organizing my work on port into dedicated slots to make it efficient. In this case, I plan to make bump to 4.3.0.15 just before working on 4.4, after 4.4 has passed EA and is released.
