I consider XMPP/Jabber integration in SFOS a real plus and a great way to avoid being sucked into WhatsApp. However, there are 3 features that should be supported OOTB to make XMPP/Jabber a real alternative:
end-to-end encryption (OMEMO if possible)
sharing of media files
and
group support.
I know, some of those features can be ‘retrofitted’ by installing corresponding packages like telepathy-gabble-plus, but let’s be honest: that’s not an alternative for “non-nerd users” . And: I don’t like the idea of uninstalling and re-installing packages with every OS update too much.
Adding XMPP users from SailfishOS’ own GUI should be part of this (see comments at bug report XMPP no longer works), because that’s a really basic feature, that’s definitely missing!
I find XMPP the most reliable federated instant messenger on mobile especially in 1:1 chats and I think the messages app is starting to be the last XMPP clients without support for OMEMO. I would also like to add links to the specifications.
Hello all. How about XMPP Integration in SailfishOS actually? Now, with New Jolla Phone coming, I will habe all, what I need for dayli driver. but only one, what I miss a native app ist encrypted XMPP client. All this buggy workarounds with Android apps is somehow working, but it feels like 5th wheel in the car.
Native good Integration would hell a lot oft people to change to SailgishOS.
There is a client, SailKaidan, based on Kaidan but with a Silica interface that looked promising, but it seems to have been abandoned. It supports OMEMO encryption but not groups (Kaidan currently supports MIX groups but not MUC, the latter is in development), it would be good if it were updated with the latest Kaidan features.
For now, Monocles Chat with AppSupport works very well.
SailKaidan is not really working well. every new reboot i need to enter my account. push is not working also. i get no notification, if there is new messages.
yes, i can use conversations with AAS, but why I should change to Sailfish if in this cse I can stay witch Graphene…
Adding to that, if disabling Sailjail makes the app work well, then the next step could be creating a jail profile that makes the app work while still being sandboxed..
Thank you for bringing this very important and landmark feature request up again, just in time to cool down my “device lust” as my finger was itching to pre-order the Jolla Phone 3rd batch…
In 2013 to my disappointment no XMPP integration was to be found (and neither was SIP integration). No partnerships with other well intended (voice) messengers that would benefit from having integration such as Jitsi and several others.
I had expected that the ex-Nokian’s would have clearly understood that their main device being is a “phone” meant to enable communcation first and foremost would work tirelessly to reach the level of integration with timely added encryption.
It makes me wonder if this is a painful fact that the often used word “Sailjail” also means that Sailfish OS can develop in an environment limited by certain unspoken rules (do not chose your business partners, do not endorse encryption, do not spread Linux OS to more than 10K people..)
As for as current priorities go: People who need “banking apps” can easily purchase a dedicated 100Euro Android whatever and get it over with. Or wait a couple of months till your bank with full government endorsement forces them upon their customers “for free”
Imagine if Jolla Sailfish would become gen Z’s Blackberry. Would that signify that Jollaboys would be taken down or Palantir assimilated?
I don’t see how that makes the quoted part any more comprehensible. Does Sailjail stop encryption? Does Sailjail mean unspoken rules? How does Sailjail relate to the choice of business partners? And does Sailjail have an upper limit of 10k users?
