Where to after Xperia 10? Just go for a 10 III? What are the bugs

My Xperia 10-s HW starts to give up on me. Obviously Xperia 10 IV or V would be a reasonable choice, but due to the delays I am considering to try a 10 III from some chinese store. What I am concerned, that in recent years I felt she Sailfish adaptation of the 10 III was worse than the one of the original Xperia 10.

The original has some bugs that I got used to, but I would not be happy to downgrade. Can anybody share some experience on that?

Besides does anybody have maybe a more reliable source for the 10 III?

For the Xperia 10 there are still spare parts available. My computer dealer managed it to order 4 batteries and 4 displays, I ordered 1,5 months ago, got them a week ago. Maybe your X-10 can be saved.

I do agree with @Seven.of.nine the X10 is still a great phone that can be saved. Opened mine and changed things so many times.

There are also shops that offer refurbished phones. I also bought a refurbished X 10 III and am pleased so far. It felt like a new one.

One of my friends experiences the echo bug sometimes but I haven’t tried to solve that by reflashing over Android 12 or 13 so far.
I don’t have Android support installed so I can’t tell anything about that.

I also bought 2 refurbished 10 II
I think they are even better than 10 III

Yes this may be the way to go. Still, a bit confused what to buy as technically the partially broken rear panel started to peal apart from the screen. So I don’t know if the screen has some issues as well or is it enough to get a new rear panel only. Obviously I don’t want to be stranded with a half disasembled phone for long,…

So you have you used the 10 III as well?

No need to use it, reading the specs was sufficient to tell me, that there are no real advantages to the 10 II, so I rather bought refurbished 10 II.

To answer your question:

  • GPS is slow acquiring lock, and will not lock at all in weak conditions. (This is the same issue as XA2, and probably all the Sony’s)

  • Standby power drain is much higher than others (eg XA2 running SF) (Under SF only, Android standby battery life is fantastic)

  • Seems there is a way to add/rename/move VoLTE setups for carriers in 10II, but not in 10III (not an issue if 10III supports your carrier under Android)

The first two are major issues for me now. These are far more important to me that any of the software issues being worked on.

The third will (sadly) be the end of SF for me next year when there is no longer any way to make telephone calls here with any SF phone.

  • Camera won’t take photos if there is the slightest movement

Just an annoyance.

Bear in mind, that when your phone reaches “throw out” stage you can make “no way back repairs” e.g, use Araldite epoxy to glue it closed for ever. You won’t lose anything,

So at the end I went with the Xperia 10 III as my 10 started to show issues with the USB-C connection as well. I flashed Sailfish on top of Android 12. But not tested too much yet.

Please do give some feedback once you’ve tested it. I’ve got already the next license, although my XA2 is still holding strong.

As of now using it WiFi only, so no SIM yet. My current experiences in no specific order.

  • Battery time surely better than my old Xperia 10 I.
  • Screen has a bit yellowish tint compared to X I, but genrally looks nice.
  • Xperia 10 III is snappier and faster than 10 I, and that is good  Even Android apps run really smoothly. SFOS apps were always nice.
  • There are some apps missing due to 64 bit (like for example XKCD reader or All radio  ) but no really critical apps
  • I already had the usual Android apps losing internet Bug, but that is no change to Xperia 10 I and it is easy to fix by restarting Apps support
  • Restorig Backup from the Peoples and the Notes App failed → angrying but no surprize as had this issue earlier , maybe using backup files from SFOS 4.4 to SFOS 4.6 was the problem → will copy .vcf and the notes SQL sometimes later manually
  • Restoring all others like Gallery and Accounts were OK.

I am generally happy with the change it is surely better than my old Xperia 10 I what I was ok with as well.

If interrested I may come back after I start to use SIM.

Allradio is done 64 bit.

That generally is about a failed backup file. You should do another try to backup and then unpack the backup file, and check if there is any content in the Peoples and the Notes App directories.
I’ve hit this bug several times, and fixed it with a new backup file.

There is also an issue from defaultuser to nemo transition with easy workaround.

Thanks, yes, data is there. I gol the all.vcf already for the Peoples app, and that ois working. Currently fighting with how to convert the really old notes.sql into the new sqlite format.

My X 10I was always updated the last 4 years from SFOS 3.x. So there are quite a lot old stuff there. Like for example I did have no lock code at all.

Yes my X10 I is still on the good old nemo. But I don’t think that should matter in this case.

Backup of notes does fail in that case. There are many posts about that here. Workaround is simple: temporary symlink from nemo to defaultuser.

You are right it may not be an arch64, there is only the bug with the SFOS 4.6 where screen stays white and blank as @Seven.of.nine commented there as well.
Still this is a regression for me. But probably not X 10 III specific.
