Hi Sailors.
So i wanted to ask your feedbacks about Wall chargers on Sailfishos devices.
For exemple for me on Xperia X or XA2, only old 5V3A charger work properly.
Even if actually 3A is an overkill, seems that on my devices the Amperes rarely go above 1.6A while charging (according to
AIDA64).
PD charger (5v2a or 9v2a or 12v 1.5a) is making my phones complain (constanty disconnecting from the charge).
QC 3 charger had same issues as PD for me, as well as Huawei’s proprietary chargers.
Maybe it even overheats the phone, my XA2 gets up to 40 degrees celcius while trying to charge on QC3 (according to AIDA64).
So but thats for old devices (X and XA2), so i’m also curious about feedbacks on newer Sailfish X devices.
What about your experiences?
What type of chargers were the best or worst for you, what were the most fast/efficient?
2A should be enough, surely 3A is better. Most important thing you need is a strong, thick and not too long cable to minimize cable loss. Sony phones are a little bit sensible for low voltage. But don’t worry, in worst case it’ll need a little more time to charge full.
Which phone in particular are you interested in? I can report that the 10iii charges normally with a 2A charger and rapidly with one of those fast chargers that you would use for a laptop.
I don’t know how much is it but i still use the original wall charger bundled with the xa2, the cable it’s an original ucb30, one that theoretically should provide faster data transfer but much less charging speed than the ucb20 included. Unfortunately infos were false and it charges super fast (super fast as in ten years ago standards) but it’s not overheating the phone at all
Frome some months now i also started to use battery protection from settings (limited at 90%) and limiting the charge rate with battery buddy to the slowest rate available (500hz ca) and i’m not complaining, phone runs great excluding the usual battery wear over time…
I guess i am interested to gather all feedbacks, on each model of phone.
Did you check, fore exemple with AIDA64 how much the fast charger makes technically difference?
AIDA64 is an app in Jolla store.
It can show you details about battery while charging, such as the Voltage (V)and the Amperes (mA). It helps to understand what actually is happening during the charging process. It monitors temperature as well.
I have collected a bit more experience with my old HMD/Nokia charger (FC0100) with 5V2A. It loads at fairly stable ~2000 mA and so far has always respected the 90% limit and also not stopped prematurely. 20% to 90% in about 2h. All of that while the battery doesn’t get warm at all. For the time being I think I’ll stick with that.
EDIT: Ok, this time it ignored the limit also with that charger. But anyhow, charging is very constant and battery never gets even warm.
I have the now after some time testing, the experience that regardless ‘fast’ or not, usb-a to usb-c chargers seem to keep ‘heat’ in control.
Tests done by me on Xperia 10 II and 10 III.
Usb-a to usb-c chargers usually stay at max 5V 1.5A at peak, heat is low.
The usb-c to usb-c PD chargers, on Xperia 10 II and III, tend to keep the same 5V but increase the Ampere, like up at the charging peak 2.5A for the II and 4.5A for the III. Phone gets quite more hot too then.
It seems that the usb-a-to-c cable keeps maximum peak Ampere around 1.5A (even if the charger offers more).
It seems that usb-c-to-c cable uses the max ampere avaible from the charger at 5V (even a non ‘fast’ usb-c-to-c charger -typically 5V2A or 5V3A- will go up to the 2 or 3A and device heats quite more - like 5 to 10 more degrees - ).
I feel (not quantified) that after a year of using usb-c to usb-c PD charger on one device (daily peaks at 2.5A), battery degraded a little faster than after using usb-a to usb-c charger on my other device (daily peaks at 1.5A), which charged also arguably a little slower each day (a little less handy).
Do note that USB-A don’t offer PD negotiantions. That’s why such chargers or cables are conservative.
Edit: more precise answer: with USB-A voltage is only 5V. Max. current is 2.4A which gives 12W. Except with QC which can go up to 3.6 A (18W). But I don’t know how QC is supported in SFOS.

Well some usb-a-to-c chargers i tested write that they can go up to 5V3A, or 9V3A, or even more if branded QC fast chargers.
I also have a usb-a-to-c charger branded as PD charger (5v2a or 9v2a or 12v 1.5a).
But in practice i never saw any higher flow than 5V1.5A on a Sailfish device, even using a usb-a-to-c cable promissing to be capable of transmitting up to 5A.
Note: i’m mostly checking with the native AIDA64 app, screen ‘on’.
