Thanks for the input. I can see the files, but I cannot modify or add to the filesystem.
These files are stored /vendor/firmwar_mnt/image/ but that file system is read only.
I think possibly the only way to change it is to reflash the modem image from Sony.
This seems possible. I can locate the modem_X-FLASH-ALL*.sin file in the sony flashing files I can convert that to an image, and that indeed has the information I want. I can add the additonal modem configs for Telstra, Vodafone and Optus.
But then I am stuck. There is no way that I can see to turn the modem image file back into the .sin file for flashing (signed by sony).
Is there a way to flash the .img file with fastboot? rather than having to turn the .img back to .sin?
Any input would be great.
In regards to the pinephone, I had a look, but feel the modem is probably to far away from the sony’s to be useful.
Hi, I try to understand your investigations to active VoLTE on a XPERIA 10 II on Free Mobile, but I certainely missed a crucial step…
Can you synthesis all your process ? Thanks a lot !
mkdir S8683.1 to create the missing directory for Free service,
cd S8683.1 to change directory,
echo "mcfg_sw/generic/common/default/vl/global/mcfg_sw.mbn" > modem.conf to indicate to the IMS to use the generic configuration, which seems to somehow work with Free mobile (I’ve the 2 € plan and I’ve checked in my account that 4G calling option is activated).
reboot the device and then check the VoLTE calling option in the phone settings.
When I started using it, sending SMS was broken and required to unsuscribe VoLTE to send the SMS and subscribe back after. I tried to change parameters by unpacking the mbn file change some random options and repack it, without success. Surprisingly enough, it started to work by itself after a month. I guess Free changed something on their side.
MMS are working also, as far as I remember (I don’t send or receive MMS very often).
About the calling status, my impression is mitigated. When on VoLTE, it’s perfect. But for reasons I still don’t understand, the phone tries sometimes to fallback to 3G, while the 3G signal is poor and the 4G one is strong. And the call quality becomes thus really bad. This happens quite often (sadly) when receiving a call. But not always…
not an expert, but i think this happens to android/iOS users pretty frequently, too. the caller happens to be on 3g, so you have to fallback to 3g to answer it.
Since yesterday I have a new 1&1 5G sim card (from provider 1&1 inGermany) in my Xperia 10 II (4.5.0.25) and I can no longer switch on\register VoLTE (4G telephony). Do any of you know if 1&1 has changed anything on the sim card?
Xperia III 5.0.0.5 on original Android 11 (upgraded from Sailfish 4.0(?) … 4.6 => 5.0.0.55)
All SIMs are PAYG, used in SIM1, with SIM2 enabled, but empty.

Well that’s awfully good news indeed. Last time I’d checked the chart at the top (a year-ish ago) X10 II was telephona non grata on ATT and X 10 III needed a threatening attorney’s letter. So yay!
T-Mobile had been getting kinda cranky with my X10 II, booting it off occasionally, and I’ve come to believe that the lack of Band 71 is what all the phones I’ve tried on T-Mobile to less than satisfactory results* have in common. I’m gonna have to give ATT or an MNVO another shot . . .
*So the Xperia 10 II on SFOS, Pinephone/Pro on SFOS or pmos/Phosh, and Librem 5. They all lack band 71, and they all lose connectivity in my basement, my local Polynesian-themed grocery store, most hospitals, and of course out in the sticks. While T-Mo’s position is that b71 fills in the gaps in rural areas with its 600MHz frequency, it seems to be doing a lot of lifting in other places where the GHz bands fear to tread in cities and suburbs.
Yeah, same. I definitely recommend the GSM-A (ATT) network via US Mobile Dark star. Super straight forward APN and actually unlimited high speed data for less that $50/m. I’ve already used 200GiB+ of data on that network as a test. It’s legit.
Probably worth noting: I was able to use both my Xperia 10 IV and my C2 in the United States on roaming, with my Belgian Mobile Vikings on the local T-Mobile network. Used data and tested text. Didn’t test calling.
