Volla Phone Quintus

I just saw a new phone device available by Volla (sounds so similar to Jolla btw. :upside_down_face:):

The Volla Phone Quintus:

From my perspective a really nice device, I am not tempted by C2, for me the rule “no OLED = no buy” applies.

I would love to have the chance for Sailfish running on this device, was also requested in Volla Forum: Was ist mit Sailfish? - Volla Forum

I wish Jolla would have talked to Volla instead of Reeder, or in addition to Reeder.
Volla is on a good track with the new device for people that want to use higher quality phones. In addition, some of their device philosophy does resonate quite well with me.

What are your thoughts?

the answer to the linked question in the Volla forum seems quite nonsensical to me. As far as I believe to know (without any hard sources) the existing SFOS ports for Volla devices where produced by @piggz as commissioned work for Volla. Thus he probably would be the person to ask if Volla approached him with a similar feat for the quintus.

I read a few weeks ago that @piggz had a quintus on the way to him, and he was hoping to port SFOS.
So your dreams of Volla and SFOS are not to far fetched.

A port is not the same as an officially supported device by Jolla. Only Jolla facitlitates Android.
I don’t care about oled. Giga makes more sustainable devices, that’s an important issue. I too wished Jolla had chosen for that company, but since they choose Reeder with Android 13 I opted for the C2 because that’s the only Sailfish device where I can read Tuta mail.

That is very true about the port vs official device.
I think it is true that Volla no longer use Giga as a hardware partner. I think they have transitioned to an alternative unnamed partner.

there’s also waydroid to that end

Quintus is priced above 700 EUR. I’m not sure how many Sailfish users are willing to spend that amount of money unless the functionality is nothing less than spotless.

You can install Waydroid on the Volla.

A statement from Volla in the Volla Forum in response to a question about the hardware of the Volla Phone Quintus reads as follows:
“This year we are entering the market with three suppliers for mobile devices. Gigaset remains a strong partner. For the Volla Phone Quintus we have shortened the supply chain in line with our long-term strategy. The device is manufactured by a company that does not manufacture smartphones under its own brand. The Volla Phone Quintus is a Volla Phone Quintus, manufactured for the Volla brand. There is no similar model in Europe.”

I wonder who the third supplier is

I think that’s called a suspiciously specific denial.

I am intrigued by the device, though. Especially their crowdfunding pitch for the ‘secret’ perk: “Compatibility with AT&T is planned for USA. See project description.” Of course now I know not to count those chickens just yet, even more so because I’ve yet to find any more “product description” other than the IGG and kickstarter pages.

I see on the socials that Piggz’ quintus port is going well.

It seems perhaps only vibration and HW codecs are still on the to do list.
Sounds great!

This sounds really interesting, I am tempted by this hardware of the Quintus (big bright OLED screen).
The potential option of dual booting with other OS on SD sounds like a dream

Since the quintus does not have an SD-slot, but dual boot is still mentioned on the product page, I would conclude that it is even possible to have a real dual boot from internal storage.

You are right, I read somewhere that now dual booting from internal memory is possible, sounds nice

The device looks good, the price doesn’t. Phones with this hardware get sold for 200-250€ new with Android on it and that’s about as much as I’m ever willing to spend on a single piece of tech.

Does not look good to me. Like C2 more.

C2 has no OLED, for me screen quality is important. Last device I bought without OLED was the otherwise excellent BlackBerry Passport. No compromise for me in this regard anymore

Same here. I didn’t give a shit about displays until I had OLED on 10III. Since then, I can’t go back.

Don’t ask me how stupid an amount I would spend for a device that had support for 4g/VoLTE + North American Frequency bands + almost any FOSS-ish OS. Volla says that may happen with Quintus and I’m excited, but I’ll definitely wait and see. If/when Quintus can do that hat trick, I’m in. Until then it’s flip phone for me. :frowning:
