There are now several hundred new Jolla Phone owners with the very latest SFOS 5.2.0.13 (you did notice that there already was an update available, didn’t you?) installed on it. Everyone will need to transfer data from old phone apps to the new phone apps. Let’s collect our experiences in doing these transfers under this thread.
For me, one of my first tasks will be to get Signal data transferred, since once I have that working I can use it as a tool. The last time (from Xperia 10II to Xperia 10III) I ended up giving up and not transferring anything, because every transfer method Signal offered (the private wifi, file dump to disk, and so on) failed under SFOS. Let’s hope it works out better this time.
Some other applications which I’ll need to transfer data for are SailOTP and Sailtrix. What about the rest of you?
I was able to create a Signal backup on the old phone and copy it over to the memory card. Then, when I moved both the SIM and this memory card to the new device, I was able to do a full restore. Note that you will need the 64-character Signal recovery key for the restore – the backup process shows it and you can copy-paste it. The security number visible to other users does change and thus your friends will get a warning they will need to re-verify it.
I’m interested what’d be the easiest way to migrate my old settings and configurations and whatnot to the new device. The Sailfish backup takes a snapshot of quite limited stuff.
Would it be safe to just take user’s home folder and transfer all of it to new device? And the android equivalent where app configs/data are stored?
I wouldn’t mind reinstalling all the apps that I need as long as all the other configs were in place.
If I remember the directory structure correctly, it might be possible to copy all the android apps etc. For example it’d be nice to get MicroG immediately working without setting it up painfully again - I remember I always have some probs with it at first.
SailOTP turned out to be easy: just export on the old device into a password-protected file, and then import that file in on the new device. Only issue was that it could not write the file into the default location (defaultuser home directory) but you needed to select a subdirectory.
Setting up Sailtrix just involved logging in to your “home” matrix server using your username and password. Verifying the new session worked with this latest Sailtrix version very well, considering how difficult getting this done was in some earlier releases.
The current version 4430788 (10.28.1) of Mobilepay (Finland – do not install the Danish version of Mobilepay unless you are in Denmark) does not work correctly on J2 (for some reason it won’t accept the PIN code you selected), but installing build version 4429694 (10.16.0) works.
Edit: the problem of “backgrounding” that still plagues my old Xperia 10 III does not seem to occur with J2 and SFOS 5.2.0.13, and GPS fix is acquired a lot quicker than with the old Xperia.
However, for some reason c:geo always says at startup that it is low on storage — /home partition where android_storage is located should be at 5% 10G of 218G so I’m not sure why?
But worse, it seems with this setup c:geo only intermittently gets GPS location information, mainly when switching back to the app. So, one needs to swipe away from c:geo, and then again bring it to the foreground to see the location get updated. Years and years ago, I had this same problem with c:geo and back then it was fixed with an operating system upgrade. Anyone else see similar issues?
Will anyone else be swapping from iOS and have any ideas to make it more seamless?
For me the primary concerns are whatsapp, my banking app as well as my wallet which from what I know isn’t possible on the new phone yet. And also all the work apps
The good news for my bank at least is the sister app was tested and it does seem to be working just fine.
It won’t ever be as smooth as ios to android or ios to ios but there’s just so much we can do to make it as smooth as possible, so would love to hear from others about theirs and to help each other.
