Telegram says it will now turn some 'bad actors' data over to law enforcement

So, bye bye Telegram.

I would say, first reason i use telegram is privacy, we know that contrary to whatsapp they don’t sell data or whatever, so i do assume it’s still a safe place for us nerdy people who are not terrorists/pirate movies retailers/etc etc?

What are your thoughts on that?maybe the time to fully switch to matrix has come?

I would say that we all know that ā€œbad actorsā€ is a fluid term for those EU/US fascists who actually rule the world. Before you know it, you yourself are a ā€œbad actorā€ because of some opinion that is disapproved by the establishment.
So, in my opinion, you don’t have to be a terrorist/pirate to be targeted by the politically correct (woke) establishment. It’s enough that they don’t like you.
It’s actually happening as we speak, at least in my country, Sweden.

I know it’s not end-to-end encrypted, but at least they didn’t give out peoples IP on demand.

in fact i’m already the bad actor for my friends :stuck_out_tongue: but seriously speaking, i do suppose that having different political views it’s not enough for telegram to hand over your personal informations?don’t really know, just guessing…

Pavel Durov will do what they tell him to do. If not, they will ruin him and throw him out of the privileged world he lives in now.

Are you all talking about the ā€œfreeā€ West World?!

Many of you are probably unaware of the fine messaging alternative that is SimpleX. I urge everyone to research it and ultimately make a switch to it.

But is there a client on sfos?

What is with Matrix? There is a Native Client on SFOS (Sailtrix) which covers the basic needs.

Signal is the app to use for privacy.

I believe Pavel Durov has stated several times that Telegram was already complying with legal orders to provide information to law enforcement, so I’m not entirely sure if this changes anything or if it’s just the usual misinformation from CNN.

No, there isn’t, and it is not decentralised. Which is essential, along with strong end-to-end encryption, if you want real privacy.

Looks great, but:

Q: What do you think about this?

Works perfectly under SFOS+AppSupport,
Linux desktop version available,
FOSS software
Maybe someone will take pity and compile it for SFOS…

Take a look @ the Tox protocol - it’s a p2p thing I know nothing like. No central servers or whatsoever.
And there is a Sailfish Client too - jTox it’s called.

First: Telegram is a brilliant medium.
Second: it isn’t the first time that Durov gave access to authorities. Initially he refused, but that changed a few years ago.
Telegram was/is not encrypted by default.
If you want a privacy-safe medium, you better choose Signal, Threema or Wire Secure Messenger.
We used Telegram with our family, but some of us got ā€˜intruders’, therefore we moved to Wire.
Third: libertarianism, once the dream of internet, resulted into a world where predators are free, but their prey are not. That’s the dilemma of today. How to catch criminals.
Finally it is a battle for power between tech giants, governments and laws.

What is ā€˜free’? One person’s freedom can harm another person’s freedom. Then it’s called ā€˜negative freedom’.
There is also positive freedom: when another person’s freedom is respected.
Freedom is a complex concept.
