[Strategies] Bringing more sailors to SFOS

unfortunately my phone plan is data only, so sending SMS costs me money, and it’s not very practical for group chats.

works too, but I’m trying to convince people switch platforms.

I’ll tell you one more time. Don’t do this. The platform is not ready. You need to be very very very ascetic to use SFOS in it’s current state.

I have no issues on my side (sorry for the ones you have) so I can recommend to my tech savvy friends (which for some of them are interested)

so you don’t care about security at all?

I tell people it’s my computer nerd system, better for privacy, ADVERTISING FREE and I can do modifications and individualize it and I praise the beautiful design / appearance of GUI.

i don’t know how you came to this conclusion but this topic is not about me.

and you don’t have to pay to publish an app

SFOS encryption is in bad state. Time to break is measured in minutes means that everything you store on the phone is not secure and anyone that would take your phone may potentially gain access to that data.

ok, but how often do you let your phone unattended for more than a few minutes ? (also according to the Fixme conference, this will change soon - Your Phone & You - Sailfish OS and Privacy - Invidious)

Something being bad at a given time does not mean it will never be secure and you should behave negatively towards it.

Maybe your friend that won’t use SFOS because he does not trust installing his bank app on the phone could try the OS first. (I doubt his bank app is ported to sailfish anyways) It’s not about behaving binary and going full sailfish when leaving the iOS/Android phone.

Well it’s not about leaving it but loosing or if someone steal it from you.
TL;DW;?

I was waiting from 2018 for the encryption to be there in SFOS. I was happy for a second. So I’m waiting and if someone ask me about it I’m telling the truth. Nothing else. Once encryption will be fixed I’ll be happy to let those peoples who asked me about it let know that it’s finally ready. Until then, nope.

what for? He played with my phone. He would try to use it probably as a daily driver. And he won’t without it.

good, then please give me a password and login to your mail account as also auth application for 2fa.

yes, those darn pickpocket stealers that have the knowledge to decrypt your phone but instead “work” as a pickpocket robber.

I guess we found your strategy then, wait for the encryption to be improved and then you will recommend SFOS to your friends.

testing/hacking/playing around/curiosity/having a rooted device for less than 300€

give me the wrench and the drugs first !

instructions are on these forum.

no I’m not recommending. They ask sometimes what I use then I’m giving the phone to play and they ask about problems which i of course explain in details.

in some countries, 300EUR is a lot of money, sometimes half of monthly salary you know?

and once again, they knew before hand it was a sailfish, they searched for it, they understood it because those people main goal is to send you a ransom note later and make you pay with btc on a cold wallet they have (they will communicate through telepathy because you lost your phone - or email because when you lose your phone with your passwords, resetting your passwords is something no one thinks about).

that’s why, every time someone tells me he or she has a low revenue, I tell that person to spend that money on a new device for fun… instead of spending that money on something they need more. Because a new toy is definetly what they need the most. (Found it for 90$ on ebay, so I guess i wont be recommending to someone in Myanmar to buy it since that’s the average monthly wage)

I can see you’re a big fan of telling people what to do. From our perspective, you’re not even qualified to tell yourself what to do.

You also feel entitled to persistently derail this thread after JoJo very politely asked you not to.

I don’t know if you’re an attention seeker, you have anger issues or you live with your mum who tells you how wonderful you are every day.

Whichever it is, I’m calling it out. Feel free to throw as much anger as you want back at me. I won’t be reading it.

There is great feasibility in using stable diffusion for creating icons.

What you can’t yet get with generative AI is exactly what you want. Nor does it tend to produce iconic images, though I suspect you can tell it to do that.

If someone wants a new icon for their app, I’ll give it a go as proof of concept and post how I did it.

surely, tell them to buy a phone instead of food. ok I’m not talking with you. Not more.

I actually ended up using generative AI for my ChatGTP app (for the sake of making everything originating from an AI), and then used the icon tutorial to make it sfos friendly.

But the artwork itself, i wouldn’t be able to come to the idea of something or how to do it.

And google and apple are going to bow over backword to BREAK the encryption they have because the EU wants to intercept chats to ‘the usual arguments about terrorists, child pornography, etc’.

With SFOS, I can implement the level of security I see fit (ok, I’m able). With apple, I can’t even share a ringtone via Bluetooth, but they’d happily share my communications with American intelligence agencies. Just because it has locks and keys does not mean it’s secure. Secure for whom?

well these are two different things actually. Imho you’re mixing here security and privacy. Of course it’s good that we can do this but I’d also like to see option to lock bootloader after installing SFOS.
But that’s something I can live with.
What I’m missing is what I said, not to mention MMS problems, SMS problems, GPS problems. The basic things. And if we’re going to get more peoples on board, those basic functionalities must work. Jolla made one big step towards this, making default browser usable. This is great, now there are few more.
Tbh SFOS need to be at least on the level of phones from before smartphone era where basic things will work, where notifications can be properly set etc. Right now we’re kind in the middle. There’s a browser, we can run apps, but basic phone functionality is problematic with every new device.
So I don’t want to persuade anyone to try SFOS because I know that he will see the bad image and next time once this will be fixed he won’t be tempted so much to give it a next try. That’s why I hesitate to do what Jojo is asking for until some things get implemented.
