I have had VoLTE enabled for a long time and still have this issue. But… there is one thing I’ve noticed lately. The multiple SMS’s is mainly from people with an iPhone.
Can’t say always, because I’m not entirely sure about that yet.
Obviously the SF phone doesn’t always confirm the reception of the SMS properly to the network, so the network sends it again and again until timeout.
TLDR: On my phone, this occurs also sometimes but not often. Since years. But mostly it works. And it also occurs sometimes on old dumbphones. Can also be a network error. Networks also are not perfect any time.
Indeed. I believe it’s called “the two generals problem”. Two formations (phones) on different sides of the opposing army (network), one wants to send a message to the other. It’s important that the message gets to the destination, so if it doesn’t, you send it again. How do you know that the message has bern received? By some form of reply. What happens if the reply gets lost? The only thing you can do is assume that the original message was not received since you did not receive a reply, so you send the same message again after a reasonable period. How many times? Depends on the sender (how your phone operator configured their message center, in this case), or until a reply is received.
