Sailfish OS design needs a refresh

Doesn’t look dated to me.

Oh, and I’ve given up trying to design software. I just don’t have time. It’s a luxury problem.

Substance as in what. We are talking looks. Aesthetics. Not the interaction, not the user experience nor any of that. You can change the looks completely and all those stay the same.

And on top of that you need to understand that design moves/changes with time and you have to evolve your product.

Why the hell do you want to do that? To confuse people? To make another buck? Or just justify your own existence and your income?

If you ask me, you are just irritating people without creating any real value.

Design is, and should be a static object from time to time. Not a moving target, that people have to relearn day to day.

If you want another Sailfish… well, then create it your self or move on to something else. I’m pretty sure most of us want Sailfish as is… with minor adjustments that we can achieve on our own. Hey… it is Linux!

I’ve got a Sony Xperia 10 iii where the sound disappears randomly and apps close themselves because of memory management issues. I’ve got a 10 iv which reboots itself several times a day for no apparent reason, and where the camera doesn’t work, a 10v where the fingerprint sensor, camera, flight mode, sound routing and SIM management do not work.

Rather than using scarce Jolla resources to ‘update’ or ‘beautify’ the SFOS UI, I’d rather they fix the basic functionality issues on these phones first.

I couldn’t disagree any more.Furthermore, whenever I have a fresh install, I apply some patches to make SFOS 5 look more like older versions. I use old remorse timer, older pulley menu looks, … For me, they should have stayed at the old versions in terms of look. But still, SFOS 5 even in vanilla state has the most beautiful and unique UI of all mobile systems for my taste. I hope they don’t hire a designer

I just think there are different crowds that value different things. Working with UI and UX Design on a daily basis myself, I must say, that I’m attracted to SailfishOS because of the current design, and not despite it.

In my opinion, their current design system is pretty much timeless, and is not dated by itself. It just does not follow current design trends.
Instead, it has it’s own little corner, is distinct, and (in my opinion) much more easy on the eyes, than the “big other OS choices”. They are doing small refinements here and there, and that’s the way to go with something like this. No dramatic refresh needed.

Don’t change a winning team. The fonts fit their purpose, the patterns and icons give it it’s own touch, and the overall design language just works. Most current design trends would not integrate greatly, and take away some of those strengths.

SailfishOS for me is my “nordic design safespace” in a overstimulating world of doomscrolling-optimized same-same design systems, where every update overhauls everything, so customers need to purchase new stuff in order to feel “like they are not missing out”.

So, yeah, strong disagree from my end.

You couldn’t have put it any better—it hits the nail right on the head. I see it exactly the same way; if you belong to this (Community), you really should be prepared to adapt—though, of course, a lot of it is a matter of personal taste…

I’ve been buying Jolla devices since inception, because I always liked and still do like the idea of an european and open source os . I’ve been using them for years and enjoyed customizing , patching , dealing with issues, applying workarounds, tricks , etc. Of course it almost never was my daily driver for a number of reasons that we all are aware of. I am really missing the point of a number of people complaining about the os, the ux, the support etc etc. I see no point in complaining. If you want all of this go get an android or ios device: easy.

Just my 2 cts

Oh man Windows Mobile looked great didn’t it?

On the general subject of Sailfish design, overall I still think it looks nice, unique and different. I’m unsure why I’d want to compare Sailfish to iOS at all.

Horses for courses - fair play if its not your cup of tea that’s totally fair, but this thread does show that a lot of folk still love the way the UI looks, but I do understand why someone might crave something more mainsteam.

That’s how I like it. I don’t want things to change every release like Android.

This really looks far worse than the Jolla Store

Or Windows Phone 8 which was even better.

This is also what (in my opinion) Windows Phone 8 did really well. On iOS it is somewhat okay but on Android, it’s really bad where almost every app has a different design philosophy and nothing follows the OS guidelines

And app developers (or at least the brand owners) love this because they can heavily insert their own brand everywhere in their app and “stand out” instead of following the OS’s look and feel. It has become increasingly common on desktop as well, especially with CEF where the application is a glorified web site that has local file access and where native UI frameworks do not apply. I hate it.

I think there are many good ideas for SFOS UI that should be reminded. But over all it is the nicest concepts I ever saw…

You obviously don’t need to copy what google or apple are doing. And you shouldn’t, except if you think the criticism in the design is “why it doesn;t look like android or ios“.

There are other excelent design in regards to UI (ie the nintendo switch) that don’t follow the android or ios paradigm.

FFS even the nokia N9s UI (looks) aged better than the one we have in SFOS.

Let’s just agree on SailfishOS not suiting your taste when it comes to design. Same as not everyone will like your proposed better examples.

For me, having a “modern style” flat design like the Nintendo Switch as a SailfishOS theme refresh would be a nightmare - and strip it of its whole identity and charme. And while i like the N9, the SailfishOS Interface is (for me) definitely a step up.

Maybe, over time, when there are enough resources and time, they may introduce a theme-engine, so everyone can create/use something that suites their taste better. But i really don’t think the current design as a whole is outlived. It’s just not for everyone. And that’s fine.

I think this thread clearly shows, that everyone has a different taste for design. And that is not a bad thing. And Jolla just can’t make it right for everyone, the ones who think the design is ugly or outdated will wait/hope forever for a change and complain about the desing, while the ones who love the current design will always hope Jolla doesn’t change it and will argue heavily for it.

In the end, it is Jolla’s choice if they want to change it or not. They simply cannot make everyone happy

I think it’s a bad thing to be honest.
When most friends and colleagues see my devices they immediately assume it’s an old obsolete OS because the first thing they see is the outdated icons and animations (except home animation).
Now, is it a bad thing for me and most people here? Not really.
Is it bad when you try to build a new customer base that is now using popular devices? Probably.
I don’t deeply care about sfos becoming popular on a personal level, but no growth means less money available to fix things and add features.

Anyway, my personal gripe with silica is that it can’t be customized easily without technical knowledge, and even with skills you can’t do much.
