Request - internal call and SMS blocklist

:point_right: PUT IT ON PRIORITY !! ThanksšŸ‘

Since recent years’ sneaky advances scamming people or pursuing questionable surveys, this has become an indispensable option to have at hand.

Patiently awaiting this this OS-feature for years meanwhile …

ā€œItā€ being which specific feature? The call blocking we now have, so meaning maybe SMS?

Yes.

If Jolla got the phone number blocking done, SMS should not be that hard to do, or?

How would you like the SMS blocking feature to behave ?

  • don’t emit any notification when the SMS arrive from a blocked number,
  • additionally mark the SMS as read,
  • simply suppress it on arrival and don’t leave any trace of it.

Option 1. or 2. could be implemented like for the voicecall, with an ignore list in DConf, that can be managed by a UI menu entry (block or unblock this sender), or edited manually or with a dedicated application. For option 3., I don’t know.

My personal opinion: option 1. and 2. seems reasonable, while 3. is a bit overkill. Option 1. would work more like for the phone log where blocked calls are still highlighted until noticed. Maybe there should be an icon somewhere mentioning the notification blockage. Or not ?

In my opinion, the SMS blocking behavior should mirror the call blocking for consistency across different blockers. And any later changes in ones behavior, should be mirrored to the other.

Just a suggestion: this could perhaps be handled with two lists, similar to voice calls. For example, ignored-numbers would map to options 1 and 2, and rejected-numbers to option 3. Though that might be confusing if rejected-numbers don’t behave the same as in voice calls and leave no trace of the received SMS.

This. +1 (10 to 20 chars)

Thanks @dcaliste

Like with callers, there are SMS senders of different obtrusiveness levels, including those which we wouldn’t like to see at all. So it would be great to be able to have a choice between either just silencing some SMS senders while entirely blocking some others. It is our own responsibility not to use too broad patterns etc. in order not to risk blocking potentially important messages - all one needs to do to avoid such a risk is to only use that ā€œfully suppressā€ option for specific numbers that one really needs to block, rather than patterns, which one can use for ā€œsilencingā€ less obtrusive messages (which will remain visible, just without notification on arrival). So it’s not that availability of such an option would by itself impose any risk, it’s up to everyone to simply use it wisely, like everything else.

BTW. @dcaliste I have a small request / suggestion: would it be please possible to add remorse timers to the menu options (in e.g. Phone and Contacts apps) to block or unblock a number? I tend to sometimes select them by mistake and at the moment selecting it does not give any perceptible feedback that the number got blocked or unblocked. Having a remorse timer would both give time to easily cancel the operation and simply attract attention that such an important operation as blocking (or unblocking) some number took place…. The very same would of course apply to blocking SMS, if such function appears in the future…

in Russia we have an emergency notifications alerts (when it’s too cold, or icy roads or closed roads, etc). Since I have several phones (most are with 2 sims) I receive each notification >10 times.
So option 3 (make it like there were none) is a must for me.
