Phone (C2) vs Xperia 10 V

On Jolla Love Day 2 Jolla introduced the community phone 2. My current phone, Xperia 10 II, has a loose backside and moisture problem, and I will probably need a new phone somewhat soon. So I’ve compared my 2 most obvious options: Xperia 10 V or C2.
Both available in august (?).

C2:

  • Cheaper
  • Comes with free subscription for a year
  • More RAM

X10V:

  • Faster SOC
  • Faster RAM
  • Faster everything
  • Better screen
  • Better battery life
  • Probably better camera

I have a low budget. And I really hate that my device sometimes feels like a single threading device.

  • I open browser, go to a site, need to login, copy my e-mail (I use unique e-mail addresses) from bitwarden, need to re-open browser that has been closed in the background, reload site, paste my e-mail address, re-open bitwarden that has been closed in the background, copy password, re-open browser that has been closed in the background again, reload site again, paste password, go back to bitwarden to copy e-mail again, go back to browser, paste password, and finally login.
  • I listen to a podcast, open the browser, game, or whatever, podcast app gets closed in the background.

How much will the 8 GB help with this? This is the only thing I am unhappy with with my phone (although more could always be improved). Is the C2 the obvious better choice for me? Did I miss things I should consider?

Hahahahaaaaaa story of the life of my 10 III

No one can answer that without guessing.
We have to see them both first and that’ll take a while.

That is obviously true, but I wonder if the 2 GB extra RAM might make a more informed guess possible.

From my personal experience I can tell you that 6 vs 8 doesn’t make much of a difference in community ports.
But specifically the browser on 10III will crash and I believe it would crash even with more ram.
That’s why I would like to see them both first and then have a verdict myself too.
My 10V is waiting for a couple of months already and I guess it will be waiting until autumn…

I can confirm this. I have a gigaset GS5 with 4GB and a rephone (same phone but for the ram and camera) and the 6 GB rephone does not help with browser oom.

Definitely 10 V. 10 V at least has anything “premium”, C2 feels like a cheap 99€ phone from supermarket.

go for 32 bit device, no OOM closings there (but outdated)

I’m wondering about the C2’s camera. Shouldn’t it be better as there are no proprietary Sony blobs to work around?

I doubt that. I guess the blobs basically includes software that shall compensate for some physical shortcomings of the small sensors (nowadays mostly done with the help of some generative AI). I would be surprised if Reeder has better software

C2 is a cheap phone ‘from supermarket’ but it will be a perfect spare phone when your 10 V or similar brake, get stolen or something.
And of course, you can always hack something on it, without risking your daily drive.

Any other phone can be a replacement and I’m fairly sure Wungiel has enough backups for this occasion.

Well at least with this phone jolla won’t be left to the mercy of sony’s b team of misfits that didn’t get on the proprietary adaptation team (did they manage to make no typos in the kernel config this time?) and will have better control over hw adaptation and drivers, so might be the best sfos experience even if with subpar specs

But on premium price. Which is ok cause we want to support Jolla, aren’t we?

There is an 8Gb ram variant of xperia 10 V

I hope it’s great.
My experience from using a similar (or better?) T610 soc on my tablet is that it is literally the worst performance I’ve ever seen in my life.
Literally 1 reading app open only (I got the tablet just to read sometimes before bed) and I can feel it struggle.
Maybe with sfos and only native apps would be acceptable for the C2? Could be, but I believe the moment an android app starts it’s going to be a nightmare.

Something like that, yea. But I don’t think Jolla will make much money from this comunity device. I think it’s more or less cost price, to please developers.

You can buy the phone with android for 140€.
Still expensive for the competition probably.
Obviously they will make a lot of profit here and it’s fine, but let’s not start saying that they’re doing anyone a favor.

Ps. Maybe if you want some user reviews you can translate this page

Well then buy it with Android if that is your choice. Me, I want a Sailfish phone (including licence) and I’m pretty sure the manufacturer want something extra to flash Sailfish and also the special distribution, jolla branding and other extra costs that don’t fit into their normal distribution.

And it will get its last android update 2025 max, with sfos should be usable in 2030+
