Is there any chance he media player app to be open sourced also?
This is still not answered
What does that entail?
Let’s see what it could be. Surely, all sorts config files and repos that do not add value when being closed.
There can be a loooooooooooooooooooooonng discussion on what can add value when opened.
Many examples come to mind.
How about merging sms, mail and chat in a central messaging app. I think Blackberry had this feature. For the user it doesn’t matter where a message is coming from, its mote important to have them all i organized and in one place, so all the information comes together
Greetings
The Messaging app in principle is this already. Unfortunately the Telepathy framework it is based on is pretty much dead.
There used to be plugins for many IM protocols including WA, Signal, FB messenger, Telegram for it. But AFAIK nowadays none of them are functional anymore.
Apart from that I would hate such an app. Email is very much different from IM and yes it matters (to me) where a message is coming from.
The thought that everything is in the same place sounds horrible to me.
Except open sourcing jolla code/apps has there been any discussion in jolla adopting more FOSS components in its OS.
Ie localization could improve by adopting pressage for keyboard/language suggestions and part of the work has already been done by the community.
@rainemak please also consider opensource-ing everything related to GPS / location. My Jolla C still can’t acquire position in a sane time so hopefully after 100% opensource-ing it will be possible to finally make it usable
Isn’t it already fully opensouce?
How do you install the weather app on Jolla C2?
As far as I have heard, it is currently not in a working state.
Thanks! By reading “it is out” it sounded like that ![]()
Great to see that SailfishOS components are getting open sourced. Would like to try the Weather app, however it is missing on my Jolla C2 and Xiaomi Pad 6 (both SFOS 5.0.0.x). I can’t find it on both Jolla Store and Storeman. Where can I download it?
It’s not yet repaired/ready.
if you can and if it is contributing you are aiming at, then go to GitHub - sailfishos/sailfish-weather
I don’t see why this would take priority but what do you think about Sailfish Maps regarding open sourcing? Referring to this one GPS Navigation that works - #58 by rainemak
I tend to see this so that we eventually promote and solve issues with Pure Map (and help developing it).
Please, understand that there is a difference between GPS and A-GPS. Assisted GPS helps you to focus on certain region with help of WLAN APs and mobile towers. We should rollout the BeaconDB support to help with assisted GPS.
Any improvements in navigation will be greatly appreciated! It seems to be quite critical to many (myself included) and common topic.
Completely agree here. I don’t quite recall what the features were on Sailfish Maps, but surely Pure Maps is better after all these years of development.
If is basically free in terms of work - why not; but realistically it is probably mostly for historical reasons.
How does this relate to A-GPS do you mean?
Dear @attah,
I’ll start with the wikipedia which is quite readable and not a technical one. Currently, Sailfish OS do not have A-GPS and that’s why we promoted Sailfish Community News, 15th May 2025 - BeaconDB over here. We do have a good to go from the BeaconDB maintainer to use it and we do want to give him credits let’s say in Settings → About. You, Sailfish Community, also pointed these option for example here BeaconDB problems with MicroG Services .
That said, this won’t solve all issues immediately but we can start gathering local information for the BeaconDB – @nephros had earlier some ideas also regarding Sailfish OS app. So, maybe we could create a Sailfish OS app that could be used to gather beacon data. For the open community, it looks that BeaconDB is getting traction and we as a community should be involved to help. @mal already made BeaconDB to work but we should create a release containing it. Maybe even a minor update release. Personally, I’d want to have it deployed for us all.
The BeaconDB aligns very well with us. It’s an open initiate that started after Mozilla quit their service (Mozilla Location Service aka MLS). Together we can do a difference there and help it to improve.
Thanks for the detailed explanation - but i still don’t get the relation to Open Sourcing of various components in general or Sailfish Maps in particular.
