[Official announcement] L10n strings for 3.4.0

Yes it can, as long as there are plural form fields in Pootle for such string.

@fnkkio, could you please check my comment about Romanian plural cases https://together.jolla.com/question/134467/official-announcement-translate-sailfish-os-elections-of-community-languages-linguists/?comment=229627#comment-229627 Many thanks!

Hi @sledges
Sorry about that, haven’t seen your initial reply from July 15th.
Went through all the plurals and added the 2nd plural form where required. I will go though most of the translations again, over the weekend, to make sure everything is in order and I will make any other required changes. Thanks !

@jahonen why this announcement doesn’t appears under the announcement topic => https://forum.sailfishos.org/c/announcements/
Wouldn’t be great for having the best overview if all announcement appears inside?

cheers

Using “1st” “2nd” sounds a bit illiterate and awkward, and loses the conversational feeling (in english). I wouldn’t recommend it unless the length is an issue.

@sledges Went through all the RO translations this morning and made some last minute fixes. Hope it’s not too late.

@sledges: I managed to finish DE translations today. As for Romanian hopefully it’s still in time

Slovene language (si) is also using genders for day names, i.e. prvi ponedeljek, prva sreda

Hi all,

Some months ago I proposed a tiny modification to the French translation (see comments below):

https://together.jolla.com/question/216903/official-announcement-l10n-strings-for-321/

https://translate.sailfishos.org/fr/translate/#search=Caméra&sfields=source,target&unit=501947

Has it been taken into account ?

Cheers, Sam

Hello Sam, thank you for writing.

Presently, French translations do not have a dedicated coordinator, thus there are many suggestions (including yours) that need “gardening”. We would kindly welcome such help if someone stepped up to become one.

Many thanks!

Right, so that explains why my suggestions were not taken into account.
I am stepping up to become coordinator for French translation then

Let me know what I need to do next.

Cheers,
Nico

Hello Nico,

Thank you for coming forth, you are the hero we needed. I’ve made you the coordinator in Pootle.

The duties are outlined in https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Translate_the_OS#Coordinators.

Please advise me if the style guide needs refreshing, especially the Articles section, as I noticed from the content of your suggestions.

Cheers!

Great, thanks @sledges! I’ll look at that ASAP

@sledges working on it now, however I noticed that the person reported as accepting a suggestion is random, see pica below for a suggestion I just accepted, another username appears, not mine (ncartron):

Imagine how much time could be saved if translations were kept to a handful of languages? Who needs anything beyond English for their device anyway? Letting all other languages be voluntary community efforts would speed up the update process considerably for the rest of us.

@ Michael
Can you please provide any link or other proof for your claims?

Are you aware that most of the languages SFOS is localized in are community efforts already? Since available translations can ve pulled in from Pootle automatically, I highly doubt that fewer or more languages would change the update process (you mean development speed?) in any way. Do you know about how QT is handling localization of strings? Anything untranslated just shows up as English anyway.

Also - while technically true - it’s a bit arrogant to declare any other language than English to be unnecessary.

It’s probably the username of the person who made the suggestion. I’ve noticed it as well, it’s a weird thing about Pootle.

As much as I do not agree to this post (see @rozgwi explanation) the more I do not understand why it should be flagged (who did it? for what reason?). This is just a personal opinion and nothing offending nor against any rules.
