Notes Plus v0.4.0 - Notes with a tad more features

I am a Jolla User since the first phone and got used to the Notes application. Every now and then I would like to have a little bit more features though. Just a tiny bit of formatting, like lists and basic tables at least, maybe checkboxes. Or a way to organize notes in some way, like simple flat groups. So I finally built this Notes clone with a tad more features and i just released the first public version.

harbour-notesplus

With Notes Plus, you can document in AsciiDoc format to enable rich text and it supports note groups. My goal is to make it as trivial as with the default Notes application if you don’t use any formatting - to be honest I’m not satisfied with this yet, but it already works well enough I think. It is at the works for me stage and some rendering problems are still to be resolved, with PDF export having the most room for improvements. The additional features can be used incrementally and nothing should get in your way if you don’t use it and only want rich text.

In addition to Notes it has

  • Groups
  • SSL web server with web UI that exposes all app features (disabled by default)
  • LLM integration with ollama support (disabled by default)
    • The assistant has access to tools to allow
      • note organization (moving notes between groups)
      • note creation
      • editing of notes
      • search in notes
      • web fetch
    • AI tool use permissions can be configured
    • All AI prompt texts are visible and customizable
  • Local Speech-to-Text for AI agent input prompt (disabled by default) - Thanks to SpeechNote
  • SQLite based full text search
  • Basic PDF export

Device Support: Requires SFOS >=5.1. Known to work on Xperia 10 III, C2 and JP26.

It is availble at github and openrepos.net.

Available translations are English, German and Spanish. No Finish yet, sorry, I only felt confident adding languages I know.

Here are some screenshots.

I hope you like it. I would be interested in your feedback.

You mean a pull request? This is a complete redevelopment with a rust core for the web server, parsing and syntax highlighting.

I can not agree more that something like this should come from Jolla. I would like to get it into harbour, but I don’t know - is it allowed to statically link against a rust core library compiled as staticlib?

Great job! I think what eson tried to say, and I agree, if Jolla’s Note app is open sourced already would be amazing to see PR for that so everyone could enjoyâ˜șeven some bits, of course might be harder if you rewrited most of it

Great idea but it doesnt save new created notes, when leaving the apps they are gone.

And it would be great if i can choose free savepath like ~/Documents/Notes

Where are they located atm?
I cant find them in .local.

I cant find them in .local.

In v0.2.1 they should be in .local/share/harbour-notesplus/notes.

For v0.3.0 I am changing the default to “./Documents/Notes_Plus”, and making it configurable with a migration process if users want to change it later on. Hopefully v0.3.0 will also fix the saving bug. (You did not use the Web UI, did you? Because this has a save button and requires manual saving right now)

I am all for collaboration, but I figured they probably don’t want a contribution that changes or adds so much code that their known code would only be 5% or something. If Notes is that simple, I think it is because they decided they want it to be like that.

Yes, you can link against a private .so, I do it all the time with core written in Go. See e.g. GitHub - RikudouSage/harbour-nextcloud-cookbook · GitHub

I’m not sure that this deduction is true. It might be something else than decision.

I think that the desired sophistication of Notes app is in the ‘eyes’ of the user.

Many appreciate Chum more then Openrepos because on Chum rpm’s are built from the code.
Which has many benefits.
There is no code transparency in Openrepos unless the dev gives a link to it. And even in that case it’s no guaranty that rpm is build from that code. That part is fundamentally solved in Chum. Besides advantage of building many arches the rpm is build from the code directly.
When there are changes in build tools in new version of SFOS Chum has better and faster chances of compatibility with less work from the author.

So I think it’s nice if you add your app into Chum too.

I’m not a coder myself so my explanation is rough but the foundation should hold.

And thanks for your work!

You don’t need to be a coder. Thank you for explaining. :+1: I like chum from what I have seen and think it goes into the right direction. I’ll add it. Is there any chance that this will become an official software distribution channel?

Regarding a PR, it is also about being able to manage the code. If I am the maintainer of a project and I get a 95% change request, I may not be able to stick to my quality ideas, so I think it’s highly unlikely they would welcome my PR. But I got it, we may try to come together - and everyone is invited to take ideas from it.

In the sense that apps build there would go to the Jolla store directly I very much doubt that. At least in the short term. OTOH it might happen that they will add Chum app in the Jolla store. Note that this is only a personal speculation. So if you would like an official answer the Community meetings is your best bet. Many would like that. I think that the users and devs would benefit.

AFAIK the build server is in fact the one owned and maintained by Jolla.

I agree and I hope if everything goes well, we will see a new store(-backend) in the next couple of years, if Jolla is behind it. I see it as one of the few but important areas blocking growth - as far as I know there is no release automation possible without hacks, for example. (I also would like to see e2e testing tools and more sophisticated permissions, changeable after installation).

I tried to register at build.sailfishos.org for chum. Is that the correct address? Because it says registration is disabled. Is chum invite only?

No.
You can ask for the account here AFAIK. You can ask for the details there.

It would be interesting to know which device you tested it on. I could reproduce it on my C2 and Xperia 10 III (Both SFOS 5.1), but not on my JP2026. It is fixed for both in version v0.3.0 which I just released. You can now configure the note storage directory.

It was on JP26, but now with v0.3.0 it works, thank you for the good and fast work!

This looks awesome. This will go on my list to install when I get my phone.

Do i understand correctly, that you can voice dictate text notes?

Thank you for the feedback.

No, to be honest at the moment voice input is only supported for the AI assistant. I will make it available for note editing in one of the following releases.

I just released v0.4.0.

Fixes

  • Fixed the search bar not appearing in notes
  • Fixed search results not rendering correctly
  • Fixed voice input failing to append text

Features

  • Voice input for search and note editing
  • Reorganized settings in categories instead of tabs

I start using Notes plus and it is pleasent to be able to structure the notes. It is reaching much farther than my wishes .
Here are three points

  • I have some difficulties removing horizonal lines. Once the line is displayed , i don’t know how to view the code — when the line is not part of a paragraph.
  • How is it possible to introduce some free space (let’s say one free line).
  • i got multiple notes plus icons in the photo gallery.
Thanks you for this work !
