Next gen VerdandiTeam phone

“No, magister, not another port” YES ANOTHER PORT

So, I’ve been pondering recently. I’ve successfully ported xiaomi pad 6 with android 14, and it was specifically picked to be as latest as possible so that people still can buy it brand new. Great success you can still occasionally buy it brand new.

But the phone situation. Tides have shifted and currently the name of the game is volte above all else. If your port doesn’t have volte it might just as well not exist at all. And currently, g2 obviously doesn’t have volte, it doesn’t even have 4G, x2 has 4G but doesn’t have volte. I’ve worked on getting volte working on op6 and for now I didn’t have much luck and I don’t even know how to debug it so that doesn’t help. And phones like op6/op7 are so old that they’re often times getting blacklisted by the carriers. So it’s clear a new phone is needed.

So like with pipa, the idea is to get as new phone as possible so that those who want, can buy it brand new, because that matters to many people, including me. But picking brand new phone was gonna be difficult since all phones post circa 2018 are hot garbage.

After talking about it with couple people on my SailfishOS telegram group we’ve filtered all the options down to:

  1. OP13T/s
  2. ThinkPhone (first gen)
  3. Nothing Phone 2
  4. Nothing Phone 3
  5. Moto G75
  6. Moto Edge 30 Neo
  7. Moto G56
  8. Edge 50 Neo / S50 / ThinkPhone 25

OP13T is china/india only, it could be imported to europe without much trouble but murricans are gonna complain.

Nothing phones could do but they have no microsd or 3.5mm so they’re lowend devices.

(I’ll go back to g75 later)

edge 30 neo was interesting because you can buy it second hand for dirt cheap but again, no microsd no 3.5mm not worth investing in

Now g56. It has microsd slot it has 3.5mm BUT it has mediatek. While i was assured it has quite good mediatek, I’m not quite familiar with mediatek. And also its android 15 based, SailfishOS currently supports up to android 14 but mal is currently working hard on android 15 adaptation.

And all the rest are mediatek and don’t have microsd or 3.5mm

Now going back to the one I skipped. Moto g75. First off, the idiotic camera island is not THAT offensive, and the blue version is especially cute. It is qualcomm so known territory, android 14, has microsd, doesn’t have 3.5mm but we just gotta bear with it, fingerprint is side mounted meaning its actually usable, wireless charging is nice addition if only it could lay flat on the charger (i really despise camera island), it’s IPS screen, some people prefer oled these days some people don’t mind or prefer IPS, I personally have seen very good oleds and very good ips and I don’t mind either way. As to other specs, any cpu above 2018 is good enough, 8GB ram is plenty, if its not enable 8GB zram I don’t care, I keep saying 2GB is enough for sfos. Next it has 128/256GB of storage which should be more than plenty for phone, + it has microsd so you can put in 512GB card and store all the music like I’m planning to do or put in 256GB and make mirror raid with internal memory. There are wide and ultrawide cameras so the two actually useful ones. In general should be great for sfos.

So ye, on assumption I were to port sfos to moto g75 on android 12 and then port again on android 15 once that becomes available, and with assumption that volte will work because reminder its volte or nothing, what do you think about such idea?

PS.

  1. Yes the title is a joke at next-gen jolla phone

  2. “Android 12? I thought the device came with android 14?“

Yes you see thanks to modern android fuckery vendor is android 12, meaning you can install any GSI from android 12 to 16, but with android 17 update, the vendor (and kernel) will be updated to android 15, at which point i’ll have to update sfos to base 15 to get new kernel and new vendor, and we’ll have kernel version 6.6 which is NICE

  3. Hi @Morc - he might help me port

Very interesting. So you made your decision with moto g75?

Or is there still the chance for the thinkphone first generation? It’s interesting to me.

But no matter which one, it sounds like a nice idea to get a more up-to-date Sailfish phone. Thanks for your engagement.

Yes I think that would be the best move. Thinkphone is definitely interesting but

  1. its older
  2. it doesn’t have microsd slot which is insanely important
  3. fingerprint is under display meaning its borderline unusable

So g75 is better option

Well, go for it. I’m excited and you have fun porting it. I still like your op6 port.

I just realised the g75 is INSANELY BIG even bigger than op6, its absolute frying pan

I will continue op6 port of course. I myself use g2/x2

The absolutely insane size is not very satisfactory but I’m so done with the phones, if you get x you lose something else. g75 matches almost all the specs requirements but the size is insane, you go for smaller size and then specs are dumb

>Edge 50 Neo / S50 / ThinkPhone 25

If I had my choice it would be this.

Lovely handset: efficient 4nm chipset, lovely screen, waterproof, well-made, and will be produced and available new for many years to come (if only because of the thinkfone version).

Bought one for the other half, quite envious (except for the whole android thing).

That said, the experience makes me very sympathetic to a G75… I read on mine, screen space is appreciated.

Tbh g75 is still not set in stone, this entire idea is not set in stone, thats why we’re having this discussion otherwise i would just go and port it. The insane size of g75 is throwing me off very much

Edge 50 Neo/thinkphone 25 don’t have microsd/3.5mm/fingeprint sensor (in screen doesn’t count) so thats ehh… you see you gain size but lose microsd as if size was restricting microsd (its not)

Let’s be honest, this list is current state of devices on the market. We win some we lose some there’s no perfect device as of today and I’m afraid there won’t be any time soon

Thanks for the work.
For me too. A phone with no microSD can not be a real tool.
3.5 jack is also important imo, but well, in the worst case, there are USB adapters.
XA2 size is perfect for me but from what we can read these days, one person, one screen size, so…
I don’t care for new devices. Many many good experiences with elcheapo used ones. But if some like it, why not.

I might not even pursue this cause personally, I don’t need another phone, I don’t even use op6 cause nothing beats form factor of x2

I’m perfectly happy with my XA2, just to say too.
But I’m gonna be soon kicked out of the game because of 3G abandon.
So, I’ll be forced to throw away this working device and find an alternative.
If I could just glue an 5G capable chip in, I would  .

3G was dropped in my area already but i still got 3-5 years of my g2 left thanks to 2G

Well maybe I’ll somehow be able to debug volte on op6 that way the problem would solve itself lol

And it’s probably smarter to wait for something actually worth my attention

i’m liking the sound of the G75…

dead duck or still considering?

The idea is not dead we’re all still talking after all :stuck_out_tongue:

But it’s so big man, i hate frying pans

Sooner or later your eyes will appreciate that size, trust me .

why would it? I don’t need more space in my sfos screen

Most peoples eyesight starts to detereorate at a certain age, sooner than you apparently think, but that is because you are young…

I still don’t see how more space on the screen will help you with that. Bigger font/elements would, not more screen space

To get a proper overview with bigger font/elements, you’ll need bigger screen space. When you get older, that’ll be very obvious.

all basically trying to encourage you to embrace the G75!

I don’t especially need more screen space, however the on screen keyboard of the X10III is too narrow for reliable typing compared to my old Lumia 640XL. A wider screen would be better for me.

However a 3.5 phone jack is also essential, as it is the only way to make ip-phone calls on SF at the moment, due to echo. BT doesn’t work with the ip-phone sw, and the internal mic echos to hell, and is unusable.

Plus: Motorola have VoLTE settings for NZ, everything else is academic.

I have nothing against Mediatek. My Blackview has mediatek, and it was the best gps, and best phone performance. I wouldn’t buy a high end phone for SF. Why pay for a high end camera you get low end photos from, or a low power chipset , when the OS draws too much power anyway, or hdmi output when the os won’t support it etc etc. Being realistic about SF, I prefer a mid-budget phone.

G56 for me.
