Next gen Jolla Phone

That small kitchen table in Tampere… I love it.

I really like the concept & idea behind this and if it weren’t for the dimensions, I’d immediately preorder one. But I much prefer small phones, somewhere in the range of 140-145 x 70 mm² is my limit. The current design is ~20% bigger in area and as the questionnaire shows people are divided between 5” and 6” so it is rather puzzling you went for 6.3” instead of something inbetween such as 5.x”…

I was one of those who voted for a smaller phone, so I understand your disappoinment.

Not really. Display size was just one of many factors (like price, replaceable battery and SoC specs). Jolla have tried to stay as close as possible to community wishes, while picking components that are readily available. (This has been discussed a couple of times here and possibly in other threads as well.)

The screen size doesn’t just dictate the screen size. What you can comfortably fit within the space allotted by the screen size and what other things people have asked for also plays a role. Especially that replaceable battery will eat a lot of space so it’ll either have to be a small battery or then make the phone at the end of the size range people wanted.

Honestly, a replaceable battery is one of those features that most people only want before they think about if they’ve ever used it or if its worth the increase in size or decrease in battery capacity.

On top of that you’ve also got the availability of components. Because Jolla obviously isn’t a big enough player like Apple or Nokia back in the day that can ask suppliers to make the kinds of parts they want to use. Small phones have very much gone out of style so the only screens available in the 5” and smaller range are for very low end phones.

I know that. Nevertheless I’d rather have a few mm more in thickness to acommodate the exchangeable battery and whatnot.
I just want to be able to use my phone with one hand and thats just not possible at that size. That’s my personal metric and I’m advocating for a future smaller model.

One-hand use would be wonderful, indeed. But even with the narrow Xperias this doesn’t really work because a least I am unable to reach the upper left screen corner with my right hand. And much smaller a screen without too broad a bezel has other disadvantages.

Why would you reach for top left corner? That’s a thing on iOS and android to click an icon to go back, on sfos no matter how many inches you just swipe from inside?

Because some stupid non-native apps may require so. But you are right, SFOS has the potential to mitigate the problems arising from a larger screen size

Width does matter for use. I find the Xperias much more comfortable than many of the other large phones these days. The corner thing has been somewhat mitigated in OSes. But that is just one reason to have a less fat phone. The other is that a smaller phone is much more comfortable in a pocket. Indeed I have jackets that a large phone just simply doesn’t fit into properly.

Good dimensions also help keep the weight down.

I know I said I shouldn’t interfere with this community much more but I can’t help noting what a formidable shitstorm the new wonderful Jolla phone has stirred up. I must say I love it! Thanks again Jolla!!

And yeah… of course I ordered one. Maybe it’ll be my last smartphone ever.

I am completely lacking 5” secure and quality phone. Would be great to have in next gen.

Now that the ball got rolling with the new phone i hope that there will be more progress forward. And HW mistakes of the past wont be repeated.

They need to start thinking about the next step already. Better design, components that are not off the shelf and in general a phone that will fit SFOS better.

The added thickness would probably be at least 25% unless you want to cut the battery capacity down to something like 2100mAh like ToH, which wouldn’t be whole day battery life for a lot of people with the increased power draw of modern mobile SoCs.

But that’s before the issue of component availability. People voted for a screen with a resolution and panel type that just isn’t available in that size range. People similarly complained about the Xperia phones being too big for single handed use with their 6” screens. But that just wasn’t true for adults. Having ended up using a 6.55” phone while I wait for SailfishOS for the Xperia 10 V I can say that its not true for that size either. At least not with modern Android.

So simply put; The complaints about single handed use are simply people with child-sized hands or who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Greetings everyone,

suddenly visited Jolla site like I occasionaly do, and there is a new phone with pre-order campain =) Phone looks beautiful! I did not like the previous phone - C2. It reminds me of the first Jolla phone, which I turned on a week ago, still works.

Seems that specs were decided already, I personaly wished a smaller device, but can do with a 6.3” as it seems it is a display size of Samsung xCover Pro which I am using along the 13 mini. If you could achieve some water resistance like xCover has, it is a very slim phone with a removable battery(which Iam totally for). I also would like to see an 3,5mm jack, RGB led will be at least in the side button, if not front facing…I would like it to be actually overlaping front and top, like the old Ericsson phones had(GH688 or SH888) and good camera performance. Wireless charging with some different back cover. Thanks a lot for your work and effort!

People would like many things in this world, but a 3.5mm jack won’t be coming for this phone. Wireless charging MAY happen if soem bright spark can make it work. Otherwise it’s what the Jolla gods give us - which I think will be fabulous.

On my wishlist (beyond more native apps): more NFC/Bluetooth support for Android Apps. This would be more important to me than a headphone jack.

I’ll order as soon it has a working OS: SMS, VoWiFi, bluetooth, eSim, GPS, battery consumption, browser, decent email client etc. etc. etc.

so probably never.

I see you’re being your usual “charming” self as always? At least given your post history…

Since when sfos doesn’t have sms and gps?
Didn’t you find any decent browser (even an Android one)?
What ancient device you have that has issues with battery?
What exactly is wrong with the mail client and what prevents you from using another one?
Also why do you need eSIM? You want to make swapping sims harder for no reason?

I do miss WiFi calling for sure, but did you just write all the rest so that you have a list instead of just saying “I need WiFi calling”?
