Next gen Jolla Phone

That seems to be a rather toothless proscription.

While noone expect a custom chipset the industrial design is something that needs to be custom more or less. In the sence that we are not android and we have a certain UX paradigm.

I still maintain that making a small phone to run SFOS and being open enough so any hacker group can install android on it will help with sales.

If @Jolla wants industrial design ideas i’d be more than willing to help. :slightly_smiling_face:

Would you say no to having a second USB-c port if you could have the 3.5mm headset socket as well?

I suppose not. While I don’t think I’d have many uses for an extra port, I’m not opposed to the idea, either.

I just fear that it could be a tall order for a small company trying to get a niche phone made. If they could deliver that kinda thing without compromising on quality or compactness, or making the price sky-high… I wouldn’t mind it.

That’s a pretty big if, though.

O RLY!?

This community needs more than one off-the-shelf phone that can be easily flashed with an official version of SailfishOS. I agree with that.

But… This thread isn’t about one or more such device.

This thread is about an official Jolla phone that comes with SailfishOS from the factory and is built with this specific user exoerience in focus.

Really.

Agreed. but that is not in conflict with what I said:

Reality - big ODM’s are not going to be creating a commercially viable high-quality device [for] Jolla when the production run is low thousands. It will be an existing device that they can flash with SFOS. Ergo - it will be an ‘ordinary’ smartphone and not a rainbow-unicorn device with a 5-inch screen, two USBc ports, and bespoke hardware customisation for other-half style stuff.

@Jolla could simply negotiate with a willing manufacturer and order a bulk of virginal phones not flashed with some stock Android. Next step, flash themselves or hire some students for this work.

Software shouldn’t be beta state.

Device must be user-flashable.

IMHO not necessary to develop a new device, there are hundreds/thousands available on the market.

Last year around the same time this thread was started, Jolla promised C2, Xperia 10IV and Xperia 10V for the end of August 2024 if I’m not mistaken. All we got is pages of complaints about all three devices in this forum.

So, when are we getting this custom made (working) Jolla phone? Anyone?

Don’t believe in the content on the internet. It’s not a mirror of reality. People tend to trash and not praise. It seems that some of the forum members here are pretty much all the time like that.

My C2 works well.

OTOH acording to your posts you live in very dark reality. I’m sorry for that.

Hear Hear. My C2 is great as well. As is my Xperia iii. Unlike the only others the C2 was produced without crowdfunding, payment only being taken when dispatch ready. The future of AOSP is unclear.

The ordinary Android phone isn’t designed to handle the gestures of SailfishOS. The way the different operating systems are used are… well …different and thus should reflect upon the design of the hardware of the phone, shouldn’t it?

There are Android phones

  • from three inches and upwards.
  • that have two USB-c ports.
  • that have other bespoke hardware.
  • allow for DP Alt mode (video out).
  • that are equipped with mechanical keyboards.
  • that use a rainbow unicorn look.

So it should be quite possible to get a device that does the things we want, in the size we want, with the comm specs we want at a slightly higher price than we hope for, shouldn’t it?

This is what Jolla states in post 1 in this thread:

The path set by Pinephone and Pinephone Pro could be followed with more powerful hardware from the SBC world, used with open source Linux drivers.

It might not be possible to create something like a PinePhone3 at this stage, but it’s just around the corner.

Should I believe Filip or should I believe on the countless complains in this forum like this one

That sums it all. Including high battery draining on Xperia 10III.

Thanks God I didn’t spend money on the C2 phablet which would not start upon receiving according to all the “trashy” people(as you call objective people) in the forum who live in a very dark reality.

So, thank you Filip, for transforming the dark reality into bright future through your Magic Mirror

Q1/2026 is coming in 3 and a half months and still no word from Jolla on the J3 phone month and a half after the announcement was made…

When companies state something like Q1 then you should look at a point in time at the end of that period. …or, more realistically, sometimes during Q2. If they actually keep the schedule then enjoy the pleasant surprise.

…and it’s not J3 that is coming. It’s J2, unless it’s another community device (then it’s C3).

Sorry @vattuvarg , gestures are only software thing. 2-finger touches and 3-finger touches request hardware capability.

The ability to physically make those gestures is also an important factor.

I can’t use the transparent shell for the C2 because it makes swipe gestures difficult.

What? Do you use a screen protection foil? Does it work without this foil?

If yes/yes, the sensitivity has to be adjusted. Is this the problem at your device, @vattuvarg ?

I thought the tablet was J2, at least according to specification…

The screen protector is not the problem.

The problem is the rubbery transparent thing that covers the rear and sides of the C2.
