Next gen Jolla Phone

We don’t even need new ideas. Just bring that phone back with modern internals. Keep the unibody design. Keep the curved AMOLED screen. Skip the camera bumps and edge-to-edge gimmicks. Just give us an updated N9 with a pure Sailfish experience.

That would be peak smartphone design paired with peak mobile software. No bloat. No spying. No nonsense. Just a beautiful object that feels good in your hand and makes sense to use.

Something quiet. Something thoughtful. Something that doesn’t constantly try to sell you something or distract you. A phone that respects your time, your data, and your sense of beauty.

  • Would you accept a camera of less than 50Mpx to eliminate the camera bump?

  • Would you accept a thicker device to house a better camera module inside the body of the phone?

For their 7th generation, Sony didn’t release an Xperia 10 VII. It looks like they’re getting out of the business.
I would suggest to select a brand that is opened to 3rd party OS. Fairphone? but they are quite expensive. Looking at brands whose recent phones support LineageOS could be good candidates.

thicker phone wouldn’t be that bad a thing tbh? ever since I’d bought a fairphone 4 – a rather thick phone, by today’s standards – I swear I’ve had most of my friends remark on how surprisingly nice it feels in the hand specifically due to the thickness and rounded edges.

Sony always brought the Xperia 1 models firsts, and as the 1 VII isn’t that old I’d expect a 10 VII to be announced soon. The 5 series seems to be dead as there was already no 5 VI if I’m right.

I would accept a two Megapixel camera that produced correctly exposed pictures focused on the subject of my choosing and taken at the time and place I needed it over a blurry, noisy, out-of-focus, smeared or even non-existent 50 Mpx one. Once that works, we can add a megapixel at a time until it stops working again and then go back by one Mp and call it done.

If we set my last candybar phone – Sony-Ericson K550i – as a baseline, and work up from there to just short of the limit of SFOS’s photographic competence, that’d be fine. Then don’t try for anything else except for maybe tinker with video recording in a pre-alpha version for a while and see if that can be done.

Never really cared how the Nokia N9 looked as I was on Apple that days, but did it today. But it shares very much design features with the later Lumia 920 (which also had a good haptic), but the Lumia 950 (even if branded as Microsoft it still was a Nokia design as that was done before MS bought the Nokia phone division) was better. Nevertheless, both designs were unique, especially compared to today’s phones were the Sony’s are the ones that look most different from other brands…

So I really hope Jolla thinks of a return into the device development - they already did it with the Mind 2, and other companies like Shift phone also work with relative small mass production.

I was torn between the 5" and 6" options - I generally prefer a smaller device, and as others have commented, the aspect ratio needs to be taken into account in addition to the screen diagonal. I find the C2 too large and the X10III too tall (rendering it a bit weird in landscape mode). And please, please, don’t pick a display with notches in it!

As for internal memory, I think I’ve gotten along ok with what I have in the XA2, but a bit more probably wouldn’t hurt. I would prioritize an SD card slot over bigger eMMC - provided it is “fast” (not connected via some left-over USB2 interface or such).

Front RGB LED would be nice, but as others have already said I suppose using a corner of an OLED display would also work well.

I appreciate the convenience of a fingerprint reader and I really like the one on the back of the XA2.

Cameras: The primary reasons I don’t use the phone cameras are all more related to usability than to megapixels etc. Once slowness, focusing problems, and geotagging problems are solved, I wouldn’t mind a higher-quality camera. Possibly more than one main/rear camera, in which case I’d prefer one to be a wide-angle one. As for the selfie cam, most anything would be ok for my use (the occasional video call).

I want my phone to lie flat and have a strong dislike towards bumps ever since the first Pilot handhelds. In case (better) cameras need greater thickness, then I would prefer to keep the phone flat and to use the extra volume for a larger battery. I have another device, which is substantially thicker than the Xperias, and it is surprisingly nice to hold (due to the thickness and its chamfered edges). And speaking about the back: Please use just about any material other than glass. Make it textured to improve grip and hide wear. I don’t want to put a protector on the back in addition to the one over the display.

Reviving TOH might make this an interesting device. A place for a larger battery would be an “obvious” Other Half. Providing TOH with a second USB-C interface (in addition to the I2C I assume the J1 had) would open for keyboards, Yubikeys, or audio adapters (in case there’s no 3.5 mm jack) even while charging the phone.

Accessories: I would like to be able to order the phone with a screen protector, bumper case or other case. Borrowing the the outer dimensions from one of the more popular phones on the market would allow using protectors and cases more generally available.

Edit to add: Would I buy? It depends, as I don’t need a new phone atm, but I probably would if the price isn’t too discouraging and longevity of the device looks ok (battery, repairability). It would be an act of support for Jolla as much as a way to make sure I have a viable option when my current phone no longer works.

PLEASE make a smaller version at least as a mini option!!! There are thousands of people desperate for. 5" or smaller modern smartphones. And there are no Android options out there with 5G, NFC, ability to use WhatsApp… this would be a big deal.

Having two USB-c ports would indeed be a surprisingly powerful addition to the next Jolla phone. …so I’m adding my voice to the choir.

IMHO

  • If the phone has two USB-c sockets then I can live without a 3.5mm audio one. (usb2headset adapter should be included).

There is an adapter which has female usb-c and female 3.5mm audio

Having two USB-c sockets would make the phone more resilient.

If one of the USB-c sockets stops working then the other is still available for charging and data transfer (backup or rescue).

I agree with you that the second connector is useful, and the solution of the adapter by @smatkovi is workable and I upvoted it, but slightly annoying because it makes both cables start from the same end.
However, I think the very idea of Jolla is to reduce the number of connectors, maybe to reduce the complexity of the signal traces on the PCB, or due to added manufacture difficulty.
In case I am wrong and Jolla wants to get rid of the jack due to its thickness, they still could pick a 2.5 mm jack (compact adapters are available). But then thy might be thinking, if people have to use a 2.5mm adapter, they might just use the USB-C.

I’ve seen no evidence of that happening. Getting out if the retail market in some countries is not getting out of the business

Sony meets that criterion. See their Open Devices programme.

Perfect design!

Just extend the usable 5 inch 16:9 display right next to the silver/gold/black top frame.
Fit RGB LED in the top speaker cut and camera next to it.
And fit a second front facing speaker in the bottom silver/gold/black frame.
This brings the size to ~ 120/125 x 68 x 8/9 mm

IMHO

  • The simple symmetry of the rear side of Jolla C is nice.
  • A fingerprint sensor in the display would simplify the rear cover.
  • The rear cover allows battery/SIM/SD to be accessed without tools.
  • The rear cover could hide a card for contactless payments.
  • The phone should be equipped with NFC hardware.

I was about to bite, then I read this :+1:

It pretty much sums up what I would ask Jolla for a C3
I just jumped onboard with a C2 and have really nothing to complain about.

Do it Jolla!

Personally I’d prefer a more boxier design rather than rounded edges. In my experience they’ve been easier to hold. The offset USB-C is a bit strange (not in a bad way, just in a “this is different” way), but I imagine that’s so you can easily hold it in horizontal more comfortably when it’s charging. I could see myself doing that.
