Next gen Jolla Phone update - 11/25

Not with SFOS, but with Android OS: there are the Unihertz Titan 1 and the new Titan 2 devices with hardware keyboard similar to the Blackberry Passport

A post was merged into an existing topic: Update on Jolla C2 Q4/25 production batch

Hello,

Ok thank you for the information.

daamn the 3.5mm is honestly a golden feature to have when making an enthusiast device. very unfortunate if you cant make it happen. even if it ends up in a funny place most would rather still have it. sincerely C2 3.5mm enjoyer.

USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is always an option. I think that works nicely.

it’s an option yet always an inferior one. Personally I have bought my last 3 phones with a checkbox that shows only devices with 3.5mm port, but perhaps it’s time to move back to a seprate dedicated device for audio purposes.
Out of curiosity how much would including the 3.5mm increase the cost? As an approximation of the cost increase would probly be the information that most people end up accepting as a reason for cutting it when it comes to margining it within wished price ranges.

The point of having 3.5mm audio in is the option to be able to use all that high quality headphones, which one already has. Please do not forget that.

The inside of a phone (or another computer) is filled with quite a lot of electronic interference which has an effect on the sound quality generated by the built-in sound chip. Moving the sound chip outside the phone lessens those interferences.

An external audio unit might also offer the possibility of higher bit-depth and sample rate, and that could improve the sound quality further.

A third benefit of using USB-c for the audio is the current development of wired headsets with active noise cancellation. This type of headset would not be possible without a power source for the digital sound processor (in this case the USB-c socket supplies that power).

The move away from a 3.5mm socket implies that there should be a second USB-c port added for the audio, imho.

I use a simple bluetooth headset during the day because cables would be troublesome in my line of work. At home my multimedia setup relies on a 24-bit 192kHz external DAC that also connects my fretless bass and a condenser microphone to the arm-based computer. The same compact DAC can be connected to a phone or tablet through USB-c if needed…

im talking about 3.5mm adapter being used compared to straight 3.5mm connection in normal day to day use. having a second USB-C solely for audio would mean even higher costs andadditional software requirements compared to already existing 3.5mm codebase.

Funnily enough I’m honestly less about sound quality stuff than simply having a functioning port that you can rely on 100% of the time whether in my car, my standard earphones, my computer speakers, my friends car, the sound system at my club etc. without needing to think whether I remembered to bring my adapter or if the available adapter has extra usb-c spot for charging.

Nothing phones always struck me as a likely candidate for this type of project with micro SD Card and modular construction where you can just unscrew the lid off the back for battery replacement and general maintenance. Processors are more mid-range rather than flagship I accept, but big bang for your bucks all the same.

Yes, blowing my own horn is something I learned from a fellow Canadian (though I have more hair)…. Not only do I have the lazer shark. I have a moat …Moatshark (lazrarcade)

Your creation is gorgeous!

Very kind of you to say  In September I was in a room where 5 people where building one. At the end of the day, it was very noisy indeed

@LeRattus - exactly my thoughts.

I think people who use the camera a lot would not be interested in a device that had a super high quality camera but the camera only comes on a dongle. And I use the audio jack far more than I use the camera. The convenience is the whole point.

That’s OK though. Just means this device is not for me. Although it’s a bit sad that I may end up without a Sailfish upgrade path in a year or two.

Just take into account the fact that a jack may be available in less and less devices and perhaps none in a near future. Some can consider this evolution as an unfair; unjustified and sad loss, but it may still happen. Personally I barely use it (while I used to) and if many people are like me, then it will justify big players to remove it definitely…

I’d follow the same reasoning here. I’ve several great headphones and do use them with other devices. For my phone I’m using wireless connections for many years now (since they offer decent bluetooth profiles) and do not see the need for any physical headphone jack which needs me routing a cable between my head and the phone sitting in it’s pocket and is collecting dust when unused.

Ok now this has me wondering… Sounds like there’s going to be some news on Friday!
