New Jolla Phone and new users - how to make life easy for daily users?

I see the risk - it is a trade-off. Maybe a good set-up wizard is a solution that points to these repositories and also reminds the user of the risks involved

No, I can’t.

This forum has 4,982 member at the moment of writing. So there are more SFOS user outside this forum as inside. And how many of this 4,982 members are regular posting here? It is possible to say the loudest poster here are not representative for all SFOS user?

Awesome! Could you post step-by-step instructions on the forum? In particular the method to get a recent Firefox a container.

I might create a YT video for my channel (Frickelfieber) and a description depending on the time I can find similar to my stuff for postmarketos.

Firefox in an arch container is documented here: Finding a way of making standard Firefox usable + DRM (widevine)

No, please, I don’t want pre-installed Android apps, I don’t use them and I don’t need them. Let the user choose what to install on the device.

As a new user, I agree. User should see all the apps available in a single place although different stores are used in the backend.

Only Apple can enforce this. But so closed shops are not good for me. When Apple banned an app there is no other way. For me this is not the best way to go. More independent stores are more freedom. Of course more freedom means not more comfort..

Jolla can only present apps they have previous checked. This apps are in the Jolla Store. And this is a good think!

I wish I wouldn’t need Android apps. However, for me some Apps I need are without a native alternative, so I have to use the Android.

What do you think about a set-up wizard that asks you if you want to install Android App Support (like the instant set-up wizard, as far as I recall) and if you opt for Android App Support, a store (like Aurora and/or F-droid) gets installed in addition to AAS or the set-up wizard may at least offer installing a store?

Sorry, but I don’t like this idea because maybe I want to install Android app Support but I don’t want to install microg or Aurora, I want to be free to install every app in my phone.

The hypothetical welcome app that @JoOppen mentions does not oblige you to install anything. It gives you option to make choices typical users might want. You can skip or quit it. It could even be the last part of the tutorial, or an app called something like “AAS settings” that sits next to the tutorial for you to make your choices later on in a convenient way. The only thing I have against is that it makes Jolla endorse software that isn’t theirs, and they might not want to do that.

access to G-store is possible with Aurora

Kind of besides the point, its great that we can use android apps as a last resort.
As a SailfishOS user I prefer much more to use native Sailfish apps. And I want to get them from the official store.
The thread is about new users, and I firmly believe this is what users would expect.

More brain effort is necessary to use SFOS/Linux.
When this assertion won’t be true anymore, SFOS/Linux will not be SFOS/Linux anymore.
But luckily, using the brain does not hurt. biggrin

For a beautiful moment in time we actually did have Flatpak running on SFOS.

(with issues admittedly)

Nothing hurt linux more than the unfriendliness of it (in the past at least).

Its stupid to make things more complicated for something anyone should be able to use.

SFOS is not ready yet and it needs quite of an effort to become usable. Let alone for new users.

Linux is not unfriendly, it’s just selective about who it’s friends are

LoL. Linux on mobile just has to take a leaf out of the book of desktop linux (I know, it’s way more difficult on the hardware side of things). When I started using ubuntu in 2007, things were somewhat similar to the situation now on mobile. A lot of work had to be done to have a production ready system. It was challenging but also exciting with a lot going on. Today, my parents, who are approaching their 70s, have been using linux desktops and tablets for years (web, office, multimedia). Everything works out of the box and I very rarely have to fix things (new setup after the LTS versions are no longer supported…). There is also way less going on in the respective support forums for the simple reason that things just work as expected.
