Multi user app use

I understand from the documentation that the Sailfish licence and Android app support is for ONE person on ONE device. This is what I am. A single person using one device, not a single person on many devices and not many people sharing one device.

Because of cognitive impairment I need strong compartmentalisation in my life to be able to function. Therefore I am most unhappy that when I try to meet this need by compartmentalising my phone use into different use cases (users) the android apps I installed in my second user have disappeared after switching back to root user and then back to user 2. The apps are still there and still running, I am getting notifos, and I can even open some of the apps from the notification screen but they are not shown in the app drawer.

PLEASE can this get fixed. I would even be willing to pay for a second licence but there’s no option to do that. I cannot sign in with my jolla account on the second user, there’s no option for it.

I really think this should be made much clearer before buying the device that ONE person needing to split up their phone use into multiple users on ONE phone won’t have the full functionality. I’m sorry if this is terse. I have spent almost the entire day setting up my second user with all my apps (I was able to install F-droid and download and install apps in my second user) and now when I switch back to that user they have all gone. I could just cry.

Android App Support is tied to the system itself, not to a user (okay, in fact it’s tied to the default user). So AAS folder isn’t available for non-default users because for security reason to avoid access to the files of the default user.

I’d also like to see AAS for every user, but this may need some bigger changes deep inside the os itself.

One option could to implement the AAS folders with user data into the home folder of each user, but I think there are many other dependencies through the whole system.

The thing is, my second user was able to install apps such as aurora and f-droid and was able to install and configure several other apps. These apps were still running after switching users and back. If an email came in it was notifos, and I could open and read the email, see my inbox and all my folders and read mail. I just couldn’t reply because the keyboard didn’t come up. I think there’s a bug around switching users and that SailfishOS are saying no AAS for second users because they can’t or won’t fix the switching users bug, not because android apps cannot be installed on second users, they most definitely can. I am very sore about this. I would not have bought the phone if the glossy blurb had made it clear that second user accounts had crippled functionality. I’d really like an answer from SailfishOS about the timeline for fixing the bug!

Then report this as a bug and/or ask in the Community meeting.

I don’t know how to do either of those things or what/where/when a community meeting is.

Search is your friend.

Maybe you could have just answered without the sarcasm. I’m already stressed to the eyeballs as it is. “This category is meant for all Sailfish OS issues, but problems related to Android apps and 3rd party Sailfish apps should be discussed in the Applications category.” …which is no doubt a neat way of pushing bug reports about apps disappearing due to the switching user bug over to the applications category so that SailfishOS can just say, oh we don’t support it.

" * The meeting will be held on oftc.net IRC #sailfishos-meeting .

  • You can also join on Matrix"

I have no idea how to access either of these platforms. What a sarcastic and disability unfriendly place this forum is turning out to be.

I helped you find resources for the way to the solution and you call it a sarcasm :open_mouth:. Please don’t take the heat on me as I’m just a user like you. I don’t have many anwsers just some experiences.

You assume that bugs are burried. Please check release notes history if that’s true.

You can also check that there’s web page access to the community meeting.

So no idea why do you call this forum disability unfriendly.

Regarding the changes necessary to use AppSupport with more user profiles, I think something was done in that direction with the release of Sailfish OS 5. Because to access the private data of Android apps, for example when you want to transfer WhatsApp, previously you had to go to /home/.android/data/data

Since release 5.0.0.62 this location has changed to /home/.appsupport/instance/defaultuser/data/data

So AppSupport uses a folder dedicated to the user profile it is run from

@headlamp_mapper I’ve filed a meeting entry, I’ll try to pass on the relevant details and Jolla’s response from the community meeting logs. You shouldn’t have to do anything but I’ll reply here on the 12th after the meeting is done

Luckily, you don’t need to use neither IRC nor Matrix to take part in the community meeting. Clicking the
oftc.net IRC #sailfishos-meeting
link will open the meeting in your web browser. No app or account needed.

Be aware that the community meeting can be fast paced and a bit chaotic, like any chat with many participants. Some people type very fast and different “threads” can overlap for a while.

You may want to prepare a text document with responses you can just copy and paste, maybe like “I struggle to keep up, please wait a few minutes for me to read and respond”.
