Mobile OS maker Jolla is back and building an AI device

Do you think it’s unreasonable?
When let’s say someone has issues with no sms with volte, no WiFi calling, echo on calls and no 5G, he would be happy hearing that the priority now is a black box with a virtual assistant?
We are talking about a phone here and all the above are bare minimum phone functions.

It is unproductive that it pops up in every single big thread. It dilutes and derails any serious discussion.

No. Not unreasonable. It’s mainly in the wrong thread.
And it is boring.

Sure, but what would be productive on this thread for example? If everyone said wow I love it?

I agree, it’s boring.
But I also understand all the complains in this case.
Because many times it feels like Jolla is polishing the brass on a sinking ship.

But anyway, I’m just being the devils advocate here. I just accepted that sailfish will never reach a point to be on my main device and I just enjoy it as a fun device.

No. You’re just being off topic.

You are right, I just got baited with your insulting off topic comment, my bad!

Can’t wait to try mind 2! It will be just as awesome as my Google home and Apple HomePod.
Exciting stuff

Of course not. But you are forgiven for not finding the actual discussion between all the nonsense roping in of personal papercuts. It is perfectly reasonable to be against it, with the motivation that it diverts resources from more important things… But the tenth post that says only that, just to shoehorn in some other random bugs or missing features is really quite unhelpful. If you just want to agree, and not contribute substance, there is a button for that.

The title of the topic starts with “Mobile OS Jolla is back and building an AI device” What shall we discuss?

  1. “Jolla is back”. What does this even mean? The paper implies Jolla is splitting its different business units (automotive, business, AI). I don’t see a consumer unit, should I be worried? Someone commented the new strategy brings more publicity, though I have not read about it in other news.

  2. Jolla is making a hardware device. This is a depart from last few years where Jolla used commercial devices from Sony. We have seen in the past this is risky for Jolla. I hope this choice will not bring Jolla to its knees again.

  3. Jolla is making a NEW hardware device. What should be the features? “whether it might have a screen, built-in speaker, its own battery or keyboard, or stay as a minimal black rectangle — remain tbc” I hope TechCrunch is wrong. I can’t believe 2 months before launch they still have not made basic design choices. In the hypothesis it is a phone, I have expressed a rationale on why I think this new device could fix a particular set of missing features. If it’s a phone and they fix the missing features, I will buy one.

  4. The new device has AI features. I don’t have specific comments.

I disagree the discussion is unhelpful. It expresses a sentiment from the community, and allows Jolla to understand, while there is time, what our expectations are if it wants the device to be a success. The paper says “He talks in terms of co-designing the product with the community of Sailfish users and Jolla enthusiasts” Jolla, here is your community co-design feedback. It says you should make sure the papercut bugs are fixed.

All reasonable things to discuss. Please stick to things of that nature. It’s the dragging in of random legacy bugs and current missing features unrelated to this that is unhelpful - not the being skeptical part. Please read what i/we said again.

Future of AI on mobile phones is looking bright
https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-talks-let-googles-gemini-power-iphone-ai-features-bloomberg-news-says-2024-03-18/

In all honesty though, the AI features on the S24U are really good.
Also I’m not sure why most people here think of voice assistant when they hear AI.
That trend came over a decade ago and passed already.

Can you give examples? GrokAI got opensourced recently but requires 320GB+ of ram, so that’s not happening anytime soon on a phone, instead both iOS and Android are getting gemini it seems (and for those who still don’t get what ‘woke’ is look two posts up for a good example)

Of RAM or video RAM?

VRAM for now, until ggerganov adds support for it in llamacpp (and maybe with quantization it can be halved, still not many phones with 128GB ram out there)

What I tested and found interesting was auto translation in a call, photo editing and the summary.
Apparently you can get a summary of voice recordings or complete websites in a few sentences.

A friend recently got the phone so I did not go through everything, but implementations with features like this I find really interesting.
Maybe one day we can do stuff like that on sailfish with mind 2, who knows.

How does call autotranslation work? You get subtitles or two voices??? Translating recordings you can already do on sfos with whisper.cpp (there’s even app for that on OR Speech Note but it hides bigger/better models you can get working with extra swap, but again not good for live translation)

You make a normal phone call, you see what you are saying on the display and the other person hears you in the language you selected.
You see on the display what he says in the language you selected.
It worked pretty well and the delay was there but it was a couple of seconds or something.

It looks like that but to be certain we’d have to ask the AI device.

And all that networked in a decentralized manner, the language barrier conversion processed on the user’s device, encrypted & decrypted peer end as well, without a man in the middle server to listen in to your every conversation and steering your enthusiastic and spontaneous conversation in global unified language of political and multi-cultural USA centred woke fest.
If only a few of those boxes checked it must have worked pretty well. Work in progress… Checking back in 10 yrs or so :-p
