Lock screen PIN entry: highlighting of pressed digits is a shoulder-surfing risk

When entering the PIN on the lock screen, each digit that is tapped briefly lights up/highlights on the keypad before the next tap. While this is a nice bit of visual feedback for the user, it also makes it considerably easier for someone standing nearby to read the PIN just by watching which key lights up each time — no need to actually see the digits displayed, since the position of the highlighted key is enough.

This is a real shoulder-surfing risk, especially in public places (public transport, queues, offices), since it turns something that should be a quick, hard-to-observe input into a visibly traceable sequence.

Two possible ways to address this:

  1. Add an option (or make it default behavior) to disable the per-key highlight animation during PIN/security code entry, at least as a toggle in Settings > Security.

  2. Randomize the position of the digits on the keypad each time it is shown, similar to what some banking apps do. This way, even if someone sees which key lights up or which position is tapped, they can’t infer the actual PIN digits, since the layout changes every time.

Either approach (or both combined) would meaningfully improve security against shoulder surfing.

Thanks for considering this!

Maybe he is unable to make good search query formula, well just maybe instead of asking if he tried to search and expect answer that “i did not find” or “no i did not” would be better to link solution if you know it while you already spent time on reacting to his question

It is fairly obvious that this person did not search. Sorry for trying to phrase that more politely. Since i don’t think this is a worthwhile feature, i can’t judge which of the gazillion threads is better. @Lasse_nixanbraten please do not feed the duplicate threads.

yes. anyway if there is duplicate thread, solution should be linked even in duplicates or “marked” thread as duplicate and locked with link to better one. or just duplicate thread to be deleted. otherwise next person who will find this duplicate will continue posting in instead of going to that better one from gadzilion threads

OT: as a mod I’m not sure that we can’t do “duplicate thread”. I’m afraid that only thread merging is possible. Write the name of the original thread and then merging can be done.

These are the ones i could find quickly, but i’m sure there are at least double that many.

Previous requests were similar, but he brings up a new angle/detail - the lighting up of the numbers. I didn’t know that. It is not a duplicate.

A new angle/detail makes for a good/important post in the existing thread - not a new thread. Come on!
It is still the same problem, and at least half the same suggested solution.

I don’t see a problem with creating a new one in this case.

I too would like to have more transparency and more structured threads, but joining threads which were separate can cause chaos, because you don’t know anymore which of the threads someone replied to if they didn’t quote.

Thanks for the replies and the links to related threads.

@attah: If this has indeed been requested “a gazillion times” already, as you say, that would suggest the issue is even more overdue for a fix, not less relevant. I did search beforehand, but honestly I didn’t know the right English term for it — English isn’t my native language, I only had school English back in the 80s, and I never had a reason to use or deepen it since. So finding the exact prior wording wasn’t easy for me. That said, the highlighting-of-pressed-digits issue does seem to be a distinct point from the “scramble the layout” threads you linked, as @user-on-the-run also noted. By the way, one of those threads mentions an unofficial patch ( Patch: Scramble lockpad buttons | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System ), but the original repo hasn’t been updated in about 10 years. Is there a maintained fork somewhere that also works on the new Jolla Phone (2026)?

@MikkoTenhunen: I appreciate the suggestion. I currently have the Jolla shop’s privacy screen protector installed, but I’ve also ordered this one, which I’ve used before: brotect Privacy Blickschutzfolie für Jolla Phone. I haven’t mounted it yet, but comparing it side by side this morning with another phone that already has the brotect one applied, the brotect filter appears to shield the screen noticeably better than the Jolla one. But more importantly: a privacy filter only helps against someone looking at the screen from an angle. If someone is looking directly over your shoulder, the filter doesn’t block anything at all — the viewing angle is basically the same as yours. So it doesn’t really address the core issue this thread is about.

I disagree.
The basic problem is “shoulder surfing” (who comes up with these terms anyway?) and mitigating it.
Highlighting makes it a bigger issue, and scrambling is a mitigation. You connected the two in your initial post, and i completely agree with that. What point is there to backtrack and try to separate them again?

That it has been asked several times does indeed suggest some level of interest.
Personally i don’t see an issue, and i just use fingerprint anyway - sidestepping the whole thing.

So why is it important to have one thread?

Imagine there are ten threads ending in “just patch it”.
Then an official solution is made - but only mentioned in whatever current or main thread. In the years to come all the other are necro’d every now and then - and people complain that the patch is no longer maintained when it is in fact obsolete.

Call blocking and phonehook is one particularly notable example of this.

For me, fingerprint isn’t real security either — in some jurisdictions, authorities can compel you to unlock a device with your fingerprint (and, where supported, face) against your will, since that’s often treated differently from being compelled to reveal a PIN, which generally falls under different legal protections (this varies by country, of course). That’s exactly why I’d like PIN entry to be as safe as possible — both a scrambled layout and no highlighting of the pressed digits would go a long way there.

Regarding the duplicate-thread concern: it’s fine by me either way. If a mod wants to merge this thread with one of the older ones, go ahead. If not, maybe the older threads could at least get a note pointing to wherever the most current/active discussion is, and get closed — that way people landing on those old threads via search aren’t left wondering which one is actually still relevant.

Deutsch:
