Jolla Phone update - deliveries started and other next steps

I understand it is easy for me and other 400-500 sailors to talk about this topic. But. I am really glad that Jolla was able to ship working phones which are not DOA or don’t have deal-breaking faults in such a short amount of time, while also polishing Sailfish OS for the new launch of the new phone. It is a Herculean effort, and they are proving themselves in a good light so far. I have seen numerous small and big crowdfunding campaigns, and they go on, and on, and on, they almost never ship their products in their estimated time window. If we to not compare Jolla to other companies, I don’t see a reason why they should get critique for their delivery process. Anyway, I really hope Jolla and its hard working crew get the best summer holiday this year, and when September comes, they come strong and hard to polish Sailfish and make it the best alternative to the Big Two mobile systems. Thank you, Jolla.

I honestly do not understand your idea. Jolla employees hang out in the forums, and quite frequently. They answer to a lot of questions here, and through the helpdesk platform. While also in development of the smartphone and the OS. And I do not know about you, but I knew about delivery dates since early December of last year. And, in my view, delivery dates were communicated everywhere.

So here is one from March 27:

This was before you made the final payment. You could have cancelled your pre-order if the delivery date was not suitable for you.

So, looks like some Batch #2 customers will receive the I2C if shipped end of July to mid August.

Does “future batches from August onwards” mean from August 1st, mid August or August 31st?

I assume all Batch #3 customers will have the I3C hardware based on shipping dates (“end of August”) mentioned.

Since I am not in one of European counties that you ship to, I have multiple Batch #2 orders shipping to a forwarding address. I definitely want the I3C hardware. Can I receive confirmation that my order will be updated with I3C hardware before anything gets shipped out?

This was funny, I got the joke xD

If you cannot adjust your expectations to publicly known and openly communicated facts you better do so. That saves us users here a lot of time.

All questions that could be easily prevented by Jolla if they would communicate clearly and proactively. I.e. send a clear email when appropriate with status updates and timelines. And not editing a day old post to add an offhand remark halfway down in a section about the Jolla Cover Band that ‘shipments are expected to start next week’. (seriously we’re expected to hunt and find that information how?) A week that has now come and gone, with still zero communication.

And before you bring it up, because this seems to be somehow the excuse, yes, dates can shift. That is fine, just send an honest update explaining why. This attitude of ‘we’re not 100% certain so we’ll keep quiet and say nothing’ is backwards.

I am with you on this. The easiest way to communicate should be through an email list to everyone who bought the phone and sending out a brief newsletter about how things are going.

But I have tried saying that before to no avail. I don’t think it is of much use to bring this up over and again.

I also think it is less time-consuming for them to use the forum that is already up and running than to create this new means of communication.

If there is anything that you need answered, ask us here and we’ll try to help you and sometimes Jolla comes in and answer questions.

Of course, it seems there are very different views on when such an email actually is appropriate. Somebody needs a weekly reminder that it’s not quite [insert month here] yet or their feelings get hurt, someone else is very happy when there is email only when customer action is required.

This is a rather odd statement in a forum thread whose starting post is a 4 day old status update from Jolla.

That’s the way Jolla communicate with us. Community manager would help a lot.

But it is what it is. So we can nag or accept that.

Agreed, having the community manager role staffed would probably help a lot.

Meanwhile, for those insisting email is the only form of communication in existence, going to the category page of “The Official Jolla Blog” here on the forum, clicking on the notification bell and selecting “Watching First Post” may help a little.

I would appreciate if there was a way to add a battery to my order. I’m part of batch 3 but I’m taking the phone to Australia ( ordered by my uncle to Italy) hence it will be more difficult to get a battery later. Thanks.

@Thefreediver Hello, let me point this out: If you’re going to use a shipping service during this process, I really wouldn’t recommend buying a spare battery when having it shipped to Australia, because under local regulations, since these packages travel such a long distance, they may refuse to accept the batteries if they are loose and unprotected. That’s exactly why we were so worried about whether the Jolla J2’s battery would come separately in the box or already installed inside the phone. Thankfully, they had thought of this =)

According to PI966 (UN3481) it is possible to send battery contained in equipment as well as up to 2 spare batteries.
PI966 (UN3481) allows to send such packages by any person without DG certification, and such package might be sent by passengers aircraft

At the same time batteries WITHOUT equipment are PI965 (UN3480) and require DG certification by person who sending such package, and such package is cargo aircraft only (effectively – almost impossible to send by air, only by sea)

But yes, sending just phone with only battery inside under PI967 (UN3481) is easier, since it doesn’t even require UN3480 sticker
