I don’t think they openly do the whitelisting. Two operators I have tested recently say on their websites that VoLTE is activated for all devices, and still I can’t manage to have VoLTE on my SFOS Xperia 10iii.
One way to find out if the problem is the SFOS software stack or operator whitelisting would be to return my Xperia to Android and test again, but that’s very cumbersome and that still wouldn’t help me get VoLTE in practice.
I am hopeful that the higher-than-expected sales could make Jolla tune their plans for the higher option.
A big risk with underwhelming hardware is to disappoint so many thousands of new users, dooming chances for Jolla to capture them again for future sales. And the hardware performance is something relatively easy to avert by picking the better specs.
Software issues may also disappoint people but are difficult to solve and I believe Jolla is already trying their best.
the new initative for “TOH” is very nice but when I could have the choice between a better HW and it I will take a better SoC. On the software side you can do a lot of things but a better HW makes it easier and opens a way for a stable runtime.
With your suggestion about SoC JF C3 could be like ThnikPhone 2025 or POCO X6 Pro 5G
I also pre-ordered. This will be my first Jolla/SFOS phone and I’m part of the first batch. Hoping for a 8300+ but would be happy with a 7300 too. TOH looks really promising! Can’t wait.
We are bringing back the iconic The Other Half open innovation platform and smart covers! If we reach 10,000 pre-orders, we promise to unlock The Other Half
I expect to keep my Jolla Phone for a longer time than my usual so I’d rather have the most powerful CPU possible now.
From the XA2 to the 10iii, I was really impressed how faster my phone got. Three years later, I can see my friends launch or switch from app to app instantly, and my Xperia is actually slow in comparison. I don’t want that to happen to my Jolla Phone in only 3 years, because I don’t expect Jolla to refresh their phone line yearly like Sony does.
It is very likely to be the Dimensity 7300 because of price and performance compromise, even if it would be cool to have the 8300. The 7300 will be perfectly fine for everyday tasks like browsing the internet. It will not be a high performance gamer phone, but you don’t buy a Jolla phone for that anyway.
If I would choose between an OLED or higher SoC spec, I would definitely choose the OLED so it also a question where you put your money.
The most important aspect for me is that Jolla get the quality of the software on par of what we expect on a production mobile phone.
It’s hard to say but if I would extrapolate what I’ve seen in the past, in 5 years the Dimensity 7300 will feel sluggish. I make this assumption on how webpages have become more and more bloated. I tried a 10 year old phone with limited browser support (yes, the SW is also important) and it was just forget it. The Dimensity 8300 isn’t really a magnitude faster and it will also become sluggish in 5 years.
The one thing I would hope for is that Jolla can financially improve so that they will release a new phone with better specs.
As a benchmark I opened Sailfish Forum Viewer on my Xperia X to flip through a couple of threads, including this one, and let me tell you that posts whizzed by so fast that I could only pick up the occasional word here and there. Sluggish does not describe the experience well.
This is a ~10 year old, mid-range (?) device that I bought second hand to install SFOS on, and then used as my daily for 6 years. The one point where performance has degraded is when opening apps, which happened with the introduction of Sailjail app sandboxing a few years ago. I sure appreciate the speed of the XIII, but performance was not the reason I upgraded.
So personally, when it comes to OS or native apps, I would not worry about performance in 5 years from now.
It would certainly be more future-proof than other Linux-first phones that I’m aware of…
I think it will be perfectly adequate regardless, phone upgrades plateaued in usefulness a while back already. 5 years shouldn’t be a challenge for a decent phone.
The Jolla Phone order page is a bit confusing and might turn away potential buyers.
I feel that @Jolla needs a bit help here with the page, so I’ll try my best:
