So with this logic if we have the same size but one tiny 1” display in the middle and just wasted space it will be better?
Also hight never matters in usability, especially in sfos when you don’t even need to reach anything and just swipe.
But you?? Need to be able to reach the top of the screen to swipe an app closed, tho?
I think you’d need some House of Leaves -type of technology to have a 6” screen on a phone that’s comfortably sized for me ![]()
I don’t close apps all the time. If I want to do that, I can also do it from the main screen.
I really love to preorder one, but I have a C2 in my hands and a Sony X10V in my drawer waiting. That’s more than I need.
Still hoping for the 10V port.
Yes, absolutely! I don’t regard it as a security feature.
personal difference, then – it’s definitely one of my most used system gestures. closing from the home screen feels incredibly clunky in comparison.
Thanks. I didn’t find that explicit info, tho.
I have make preorder. I miss my first Jolla so much what i have lost
I didn’t see any option for it with paypal.
I did prioritize a Jolla phone so preordered with my bankcard.
I like that the design honors JP-1301 and orange for preorder like in 2013 i only hope it’s real NFC this time.
The size of Apple iPhone 17 with 6.3” display is 149.6 x 71.5 x 8 mm!
New Jolla phone with same display size is almost 1cm longer and 1/4 cm wider. That is significantly bigger phone! Its not about the looks but the ability to use with one hand and fit in pocket.
Samsung Galaxy S25 is 6,2” display fit in 146.9 x 70.5 x 7.2 mm. So much more comfortable to use with one hand.
Why didn’t Jolla fit 6.2 - 6.3 inch display in a smaller body??
Because of:
The device size goes in hand with the screen size. Now, in our volumes we’re dependant on availability of existing screen modules from the component vendors which we need to match to the 5G SoC platform without massive PCBA redesign (the “motherboard” of a phone). After thorough digging and negotiations we have found couple of options which would be smaller than the industry “standard” for this type of product (which tends to be nowadays 6.5” or more), and which we could apply with the 5G SoC platform. Thus, it looks like we’ll be able to realise the product with a smaller than 6.5” display. The aspect ratio is another one. Many of you have commented that the aspect ratio found e.g. in the popular Sony devices is a bit too “long” for many, and rather a ratio from 16:9 to 20:9 would be preferred. Nowadays, a 16:9 display in a modern smartphone configuration is rare combo and for our volumes infeasible to realise. Further it would likely make the product housing significantly wider than necessary by the PCBA, so a good compromise here will be needed.
Are folks really comparing the new Jolla Phone to phones that are nearly double the price and manufactured by companies valued in the 100s of billions or several trillions, many of whom are able to buy out entire or literally set up their own manufacturing facilities, including custom ARM SoCs?
Wild. Jolla is trying for 2000 units. Not 2 million..or 20 million…or ya know in the case of Apple shipping 247 million iPhone 17s (across the various SKUs).
Get Jolla shipping 100k+ units or 1M+ units and I am sure they can start putting more attention into things like bezel sizes.
Spot on. I feel like there’s a lot of unrealistic expectations in these threads.
I am willing to accept the rough edges the new Jolla Phone might have, to support an independent European alternative.
I do not even know what, but pre-ordered anyway. I believe in magic & jolla.
I would like to buy Jolla smartphone, but I’m wondering if the big notch in the screen is because there’s a hidden LED indicator there, or if Sailfish OS doesn’t support screens with a punch hole at the moment….?
Yes, there’s an LED indicator in the notch
News is now spreading on Gsmarena website:
Today I managed to pre-order this phone with Ideal and Stripe. Thank you! This original design has a strong reminiscence to the first Jolla. That was a futuristic device because we could open it. It had back sides with different colours and ambiences. Orange is not my favorite colour but never mind. It is bright and cheerful. The only minor thing about the shopping site is ‘powered by Google’. When Jolla becomes bigger, perhaps this ‘power’ can be left out?
Pre-orders running fast. What happens if we hit the gaol of 2000 soon? Will Jolla start with the production earlier, increase the number of devices for the first batch, start pre-orders for the second batch…?
