It lists apps in alphabectical order .

i think a lot of your issues with the os design and app drawer would resolve themselves with time if you persist. The more you use it, the more you get used to it, if you get what I mean? You can use app folders too (which can be renamed), so you can eg. group app stores in one folder, settings apps in another etc. But on the whole muscle memory kicks in and you remember where apps are, but also you get used to what the icons are.
It must be a huge jump to move to an alien OS, but if the major blockers for most people (contactless payments IMO) aren’t an issue, i think you could come to enjoy the os and find yourself at home here.
The blank Android app cover is a bug which I’m sure they’ll fix, so maybe try again when the next update drops?

There is native alternatives for those, especially for the music app. Just search the three app stores.
There’s alternatives for that to… search OpenRepos with Storeman app.

I installed couple of music apps, they are all pretty basic and strange to navigate (in one I couldn’t figure out for 5 minutes how to get back to playing queue 
). I tried Atlantic browser, for sure it’s an improvement over native, but nowhere near Firefox or Brave. Also I found keyboard with number row, but only in english layout.
Then again… you don’t want an alternative phone, you want same as always.
I think that is the problem for everyone who complains about SailfishOS.

I’m not sure if you are aware about it, but you can apply patches on Sailfish with Patchmanager (install it from Chum). Once it’s installed, a new setting will appear in the Settings app and from there you’ll be able to install and apply patches. One of them makes exactly what you want: Project: sailfishos-patch-homescreen-always-show-launcher
The downside is not all of them are maintained and compatible with the latest version of SFOS. Unfortunately, this patch will need some rework to be compatible again with the latest version.

I do want alternative phone, but fully usable one. For sure I can get used to new os design and navigation, but proper browser is critical, especially since missing apps you have to use web access instead.

For me, functional calls (2G or 4G VoLTE), SMS, reliable basic web browsing on a 4G-5G network, and an average or decent camera are enough for daily use of the new Jolla phone.

The vague usage ‘pretty bad and too basic [music] apps’, ‘strange to navigate’ you describe here seems all to be about app usage rather than this specific phone. If you find feedback threads for the native apps you tried, please don’t forget to fill in your constructive feedback there.

There’s Multi Keyboard Layouts. One of this first things I install on a new SFOS device because it is super annoying not to have a number row.
This has support for multiple languages and it’s easy to add support for missing ones.

Completely agree with your sentiment. But look at it this way the primary objective of the exercise is to provide a usuable alternative to the existing and dubious duopoly. In this Jolla have done exceptionally well in launching the J2 in small but significant numbers. Sure it’s not perfect and I speak as a C2 user which is one generation back.
When I decided to make the switch to Jolla I sat down and wrote out the things that I really needed to have on the ‘phone. The Jolla C2 does that and more though I recognise that I’m not a power user.
Thread drift,
My reasoning for making the switch was reinforced recently by reading the privacy statement of an international corporation. It took me a half hour and left me with the cold feeling that these people are part of a system that is designed to control what we can do.

I hope that this thread continues as it will provide feedback to Jolla. Their decision to have such a thread shows courage.
PS A similar thread for Iphone users going to Android (or vice versa) would probably be full of grumbles too. Give it time.

Yes I have that one installed, but unfortunately there in no layout in my language (croatian) with number row. So I can either use english layout with number row, or slovenian without numbers to get needed diacritics.
You can merge those two.
I have added a number row to my language layout years ago. Works well. I also changed some accents placing and emoji, iirc.

there are many threads popping and yuu might find how to do that.
(not easy to help more from the phone, in a crouded train but please ask again of you don’t find how to do it )

BUT
I just saw the Nephros big fat warning on another thread, that recalled me:
Fiddling in a bad way with the kb can get you locked out of the device if the kb can’t start for any reason.
Perhaps good to temporarly replace the passphrase/password with a pin (numbers only).
Double check that everything is working well and that the kb does not crash.

so funny thing here; noticed calls were listed as ”rejected” (or something), with a large red sign on the call list. turns out on the other end, the call goes straight to answering service…happens now every time; am on telia 4g with VolTE. Network and whatsapp work including calls. any mitigation available? reboot doesnt seem to fix it
