Thanks for this. I think I’ve done it right.
I’m in, booked a hotel room for 2 nights 8.-10.7. near the main venue, possibly gonna appear four-fiveish to the general area. Excited to see all the sailors who can make it, very much looking forward to it!
We (2) are arriving Helsinki 6/7 and staying until10/7. Has anyone any hotel recommendations. We also want to join the guided tour. Love to see you all at the event.
My friend and I are staying at Scandic Paasi. No experiences with them, but it seems nice enough and the price and location is good. It is a 2 km walk to the venue.
I wish all of you much fun and excitement
I was not able ti be there in these days.
It’s great to see so much interest in the launch party with so many community members traveling to Helsinki next week from all over Europe. Just in case someone may be interested in seeing other parts of the country as well, I’d like to point out that one of the very best things about Helsinki is that it is only a 90 minute train trip away from Tampere. ![]()
Tampere, apart from being “the Finns’ favourite city”, is of course the very destination where you’ll be able to see the famous neighbourhoods of Tampella and Pispala (and while looking at the map, wonder about what the next releases might be called), get a selfie in front of the Jolla office and bathe in the oldest public sauna in Finland, which was featured in some of the SFOS 4.6 era communications – or any of the other 60+ public saunas you’ll find in the Sauna Capital of the world.
me and my father would also be there on Tuesday (7th) if thats ok (and if there is space left). If not we could probably also be there on the 9th.
Is there already a plan where to meet up at Suomenlinna?
One of the best things about Helsinki, is that it is close to Tampere? I wasn’t planning to go, but now I hope I can squeeze it in.
I’m in Helsinki from July 7 to 10. If I go, I can only go after the party (because my current 10 V can’t make pictures of me in front of Jolla office), so maybe the 9th. But if there is a tour on the 9th… And I have tickets for Dark Tranquility the 9th, in Helsinki. Maybe the 10th? But I have to be back on time for my plane home. It will be a close call.
One major flaw in my travel plans: I didn’t think of going to a sauna. The thought crossed my mind, but without thinking I dismissed it as a northern Finland or winter thing. But of course, I’m in Finland these 4 days, so I should go to a sauna in these 4 days.
If I can’t make it to Tampere, or if there is no time to go to the sauna there. Are there other saunas in Helsinki to recommend? Seperate or sekasauna (yes, I did some research, and probably still use it wrong), doesn’t matter.
Also, I looked here: Your guide to Finnish sauna | Visit Finland
The page says: “Finnish saunas are calm, quiet, and free of distractions”, although the bold quiet is an emphasis I made. Because in a clip at the top of the same page, the woman says: “a sauna is a social place, so feel free to chat with your neighbors” (paraphrasing, because I probably did not remember the exact words). So, just a calm conversation? Or are there different social rules for different saunas? Or just not overthink it?
You should absolutely try to squeeze in a visit to a sauna if you can. There are many public saunas in Helsinki as well which might suit your tight schedule. Maybe locals have more ideas and recommendations, but here are a couple options you may want to look at:
-
Kotiharjun sauna – a wood-burning public sauna, more in the traditional end of the scale
-
Löyly – a modern and posh take by the sea
If you are staying in/near the central Helsinki area, both of these might work well in terms of location and opening hours.
Regarding the social rules & conversation - it’s not at all common for a public sauna to have a strict no-conversation policy (and the few places that have this, will make it well known in advance). So, in general a calm conversation is a good strategy.
Hey can I still join in? ![]()
As a local: yes, both are good options and I definitely recommend a visit! Kotiharju is close to Scandic Paasi, and Löyly isn’t that far if you prefer that. Calm conversation is a good advice - and I would dare say that people, especially young/more fluent in English, are happy to help in the how-to’s of sauna culture!
Will we meet near the ferry? I am assuming that is how we get to Suomellina tomorrow.
I will take the ferry att 13.00 from the Market square (Kauppatori).
You might find me with this Hvar
Did you see this: https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/walk-on-finnish-history-and-society-on-the-7th-and-9th-of-july/
Hi - I got a ticket for the 13:00 ferry, too
But I didn’t find out, where to board, yet. Is it the one place with the red sign?
What will you wear, so we can recognize you?
See you, soon - Roland
This stands in the middle of the Market Square in front of the Swedish embassy. I’ll pass it while arriving to the square and collect all people waving a Jolla phone.
You should also see me arriving on Hvar

When you visit Helsinki for the first time and when you arrive by train: Narinkkatori is close to the beautiful railway Station.
At first our satnav was confused about Narinka, so we had to cycle around before we found it. Here it is:
Leave the main entrance of the Station, go to the right, follow the tram line. You will pass a Sokos building. Go straight ahead en cross the Mannerheiminti street. After crossing there is a café with terrace at the corner. Pass this and go right immediately. On your right you will see two artificial hills with tiles and a clock. On your left you will see an orange wooden building that looks like a giant tub, but it isn’t, it’s a chapel! Walk further and you see on the right a pale yellow long building: the backside of Henry’s Music Bar. Walk further till you see the front side of this Bar. This is the correct address: Narinka 2. Look for the main entrance.
I would recommend Sompasauna as a good option as well.
Our local Beer God approves of this message.
