Jolla Phone (2026) Batch 1: Broken USB port, volume button issues and dust under the screen

I received my Jolla Phone (2026) (Batch 1), only about a month ago, but I’m already experiencing several hardware issues. The most urgent one is that the phone no longer charges at all, leaving me without a working phone.

Broken USB port
A few days ago, the phone started charging only when the cable was positioned at a particular angle. The problem has since worsened, and now it won’t charge in any position. I’ve tested the same charging cable with other devices, and it works perfectly fine with them.

Volume button
The volume-up button only responds when I press it extremely hard, to the point that my finger becomes sore. This makes it difficult and uncomfortable to use normally.

Dust under the screen
I’m also experiencing dust under the screen, similar to what other users have mentioned. In my case, I can see dust over the selfie camera.

Besides leaving me without a working phone, this is also blocking my work as a developer. I have several projects that I want to release, but with the phone now unusable, I’m stuck and unable to continue development or prepare those releases.

It’s really disappointing to encounter multiple hardware problems with a phone that is only about a month old…

Edit: Yes I’ve already sent an email to the shop, as their ticket support does not even list the JP2.
Who knows when they will even reply…

If you haven’t already, you should make a post with your details in the Dust Issue thread. People there have reported that they have received emails about the process involved (ie replacement devices sent to them before they send back their affected devices)

There is another thread here about issues with the volume button.

The USB port is a new issue, but new phones now should have a new sub board that carries that part, so hopefully that will not be an issue when you receive your replacement device.

One topic per topic, please - clue is in the name.

Why can’t I post my own topic with the issues that I have?
Why does it needs to be separate?

to try and get your phone working again in the mean time, take a very fine pin (safety pin, sewing needle) and carefully clean out the port, scraping at the bottom a little, but like, gently, if you see what i mean. (if you are irritated at the suggestion because it’s less than a month and the port is clearly free from debris and you’re not gonna try sticking a pin in it…try sticking a pin in it. clothing fibres get compacted in an invisible layer at the bottom all the time).

obviously also try different chargers and cables.

two side notes re: spare parts

  1. jolla sells replacement batteries but no external charger. the charger cable would need finagling i am disappointed about this. with my n900, i used to swap out the battery in the morning and never bother charging it. obviously not a solution here, but a useful stopgap for when usbc ports inevitably fail
  2. the I3C board is also the usb-c port. since those are going to be available to folks who need it, it is likely that usb-c replacements will also be served as well

lol, dont feed the trolls. attah has a habit of inventing things to fight about
(edit: in addition to also often saying useful things)

The port is clean, there’s no dust in it.

As stated before, cable works fine on other devices.
This is not a cable issue, but a port issue. The port is wiggling badly when a cable is attached.

…did you try using a pin tho?

i cannot tell you how many ‘broken’ usb ports, with these exact symptoms, that i’ve fixed with a safety pin. occasionally i need to replace the board to fix these, but like 95% of the time, its a tiny, impossible to see, piece of crap at the bottom

also, i believe you that its the port, but testing the same cable in other devices is NOT enough information to determine that it is a port issue and not a cable issue.
try other cables and other chargers in the broken device. a broken cable can work in many devices but not a certain fussy one.

I have done phone repairs for many years myself as a job before.
I know what is wrong with it…

This is a forum and not a chat. There probably already exists threads on all these issues with much better information than your own duplicate thread is likely to get. The forum is not about you.

Because other people maybe only care about one of the issues, and only want to participate in one of the discussions? And how do you mark a thread two-fifths solved?

This still does not mean that I shouldn’t post my issues in one thread.
Anyway, you’re getting this thread to off-topic regarding my issues.

cool. taking out the usb sub board is very easy on this device. have you inspected the sub board for physical damage? curious if its cracked silicon or flimsy solder joints

I do not plan on opening up the device and loose the warranty already.

Even though I’m curious about this myself either… :face_holding_back_tears:

That won’t be an issue.
The actual point is that he would like to “skip the line” in replacements because he is doing a set of patches and that is important, apparently.
That’s why he mentioned this here, and also in telegram earlier today.

There’s a huge difference in these situations

A phone with dust on the selfie camera or the volume buttons not working properly is still usable. A phone with a non working USB port isn’t…

I will not argue about what’s important to anyone. Even the selfie camera, as useless as it might be for a Linux phone, might be mandatory for someone who attends meetings let’s say.
We all wait and use our other devices if we must until we get replacements from Jolla.
Flooding their communication channels so far proved to be counterproductive for everyone.

They’re just dumping all the complaints under a single thread to keep them from getting too much visibility and cover the whole thing up—it’s like buying a table that looks great on the outside, but is actually made of cheap pressboard inside, so they don’t want word getting out. That’s why they brush it off by labeling it off-topic, operating like machines just to crush people’s spirit and living right up to their title as total triggers.

True, but why was this done without any foresight? I’ve seen even the Commodore phone get drop-tested and pass a bunch of tests, so tell me, how many times did your phone go through these tests? We already talked about this with you, though, but I guess I’ve learned one thing in life: today’s small complaints help tomorrow’s growth.

You literally miss the whole point of what I am saying…

I did not say that a function that is not working properly is not important.
I said that a phone with a broken USB port means that it’s not usable at all. You CAN’T charge the phone. Which means it’s literally in an unusable state.
