Jolla C2 Community Phone: your feedback is needed!

I feel your frustration! I hope connectivity will improve for all of us!

You probably mean -60dBm. That’s low. Do you have any other device that can measure the signal?

No idea why. Didn’t try to use it yet. But some others also reported that issue.

Yeah I can but to be honest I’m just curious as to why only the C2 drops, I know signal is not great in several spots on the house that’s why I sat next to the router, disappointment was to not see it get much better.

It’ll get better I’m sure, just thought it was appropriate to feedback that at least for a normal user the connectivity seems to be a bit challenging at the moment.

Thanks for the engagement

I’ve just compared the output of WiFi Analyser on the C2 and on the Xperia 10 II. The C2 is consistently about 10 dBm worse than the Xperia 10 II, on both 2.4 and 5 GHz. For example, where I’m sitting right now, I get:
Xperia 10 II: -43 dBm
C2: -53 dBm

Got my C2 finally. Its faster than expected even more like mine xz2 compact with sfos community port. Maybe its the more RAM or the better Hardware-Adaption, it feels snappier in every way. No problems so far. Build quality is also better than expected. Is this really a 720p Display, can’t believe it, it looks good and very bright. I choose the lowest brightness with automatic.

Yes it’s 720px / 3" wideness of screen = 240 dpi = 9.44 px/mm. That should be enough for every usecase except putting the phone into a vr adapter and watching 3D movies. Every other usecase should imho be covered fine.

First Problem that appears is that the Camera is stuck at Selfie-Cam and pressing the Maincam-Toggle-Button does nothing. It was updated to the newest Version of SailfishOS and this occures for the first time after some test-reboots.

Edit:
I could fix it with the search-function and this command:

dconf reset -f /apps/jolla-camera/

Thanks must go out to @attah wo did the mention here:

Every other usecase should imho be covered fine.

Not for me - there are to many use cases where
reading text is seriously affected by the low display resolution - even native apps.

I am using Citrix a lot, i.e. a desktop environment on a small display. It works really great on the experias or the tablet but not at all on the C2 (I mean it works, albeit it is useless.

Of course, this is quite particular a use case

Mine seems to toggle cameras correctly, there is a known issue with recording video tho. I have no problems with WiFi signal strength, but i find the c2 h/w weak, i do not think s/w optimisations can hide this.

It is pretty common size today…

  • iPhone 16 = 6.1 inch
  • iPhone 16 Pro = 6.3 inch
  • iPhone 16 Plus = 6.7 inch
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max = 6.9 inch
  • Samsung S24 FE = 6.7 inch
  • Samsung S24 Plus = 6.7 inch
  • Samsung S24 Ultra = 6.8 inch
  • Huawai P40 = 6.1 inch
  • Huawai P50 = 6.3 inch
  • Huawai P50 Pro = 6.6 inch
  • Jolla C2 = 6.5 inch

Nothing special here… it is big, but that is pretty common since round about 2023.
Some do not like it, but increasing screen sizes is the current trend all around for the last 15 years in the smartphone market.

Only exception is a foldable phone… those are smaller but much thicker of cause.

To me it’s a big turnback of the clock that low(or middle?) end phones of such a screen size(following the trend) are going back to 720P in resolution. My first Android phone bought in 2017 with a price cheaper than S19 MAX PRO S(even in its buy-one-get-one-free price or half the labeled price) has a 5.5 inch 1080P screen. This PPI reminds me of my good broken Lumia 535.

On paper yes… but I really do not see a reason to be upset of that too much.
I have the Lumia 950XL, the Xperia 10 II & III and the C2 next to eachother here, and if you are not very much looking for it, it is enough PPI on all of them to have a pretty sharp image. It looks much better than you very likely think it would.

And what many people just don’t understand:
A higher resolution comes with big drawbacks – you need much more powerful GPUs and CPUs to render out a lot more pixels and more energy is consumed by those screens like that.
And that means:
Less FPS, less battery life for a pixel density most would not notice in the first place or only next to each other.

Which is more important to you is up to you, for me it definitively is more important to have a longer lasting, more snappy smartphone instead of a higher resolution I do not notice anyway. (not to say what happens if you take into account that most people do have slightly bad eyes anyway… ;))

Yeah that Android phone has a short lasting and rapidly deteriorating battery which makes it totally unusable after two years (w.
A lower PPI screen could display pretty well with a good material, I love the vibrant 544p screen of the PlayStation Vita.
But I just can’t avoid thinking a 720P phone could have a compact size like Lumia 550. Maybe I don’t get the point of expanding screen size while keeping the same resolution. Perhaps other parts of a modern phone have to take more space (a larger battery of course.

My C2 stop responding almost whatever I do. If I open example notes or settings I got notification “not responding”. If push “please wait” nothing happens and notification comes back. Then app closes down.

This is most likely due to a bug, which has been reported already (and is worked on). Reboot and you will be fine until this bug hits again.

I did reboot and apps are opening again but opening is very slow compared to Xperia 10 lll.
I hope bugs are fixed soon.

I’m sorry I didn’t read topic very much because I got C2 this week and it’s difficult to send feedback without device.

Interestingly since I installed a couple of apps today, my C2 is very snappy now (pretty much on par with my X10 iii). I am not sure why. Before it had a couple of micro lags from time to time, but since that, it works very fast.
Maybe some kind of lib is missing or it was the “pkcon refresh” I did or anything… not sure.

Anyway, C2 needs a couple of software fixes… if they are done, it is pretty nice.

On paper:

  • Unisoc Tiger T606 in C2 is at least slightly faster than Snapdragon 665 in Xperia 10 II (+4% in AnTuTu, Geekbench: +11% in Single-Core Score, +19% in Multi-Core Score)
  • Mali-G57 in C2 should also be better than Adreno 610 in Sony 10 II
  • We keep in mind C2 is 720x1600 px and Sony 10 II is 1080x2520 px

On paper, C2 should have much better performance than Sony 10 II. What I see, however, is that C2 is somehow laggier. And if comparing to Sony 10 III, it’s not even close.

Sure, software optimisation is much more important than sheer numbers. But what is also important is that higher resolution is better for eyes, some specialists say (less eye-strain when looking at high resolution image). Can confirm that I can look at Sony 10 II or III far longer without eye-strain, C2 is not very comfortable for eyes – while also much slower than Sony models I used. Let’s hope optimisations and performance fixes are on the way

By the way, one implication of having resolution this low on a 6.5" screen is giant UI in android applications with standard scale settings. Fortunately, this can be changed in android settings of app support

Well, the problem with C2 being slow comparing to Sony 10 III is because Unisoc T606 is much slower than Snapdragon 695. Although software optimisation can be the key here, we’ll see where C2 will be in a year

I disagree. My Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact has a Snapdragon 845, which should be faster than the 10 III in terms of Hardware. Maybe the Community-Port of the XZ2 Compact isn’t well optimized for it, but even if the C2 Port is considered as Beta until now, it feels faster than the XZ2 Compact in many ways. And we can surely expect more optimations and updates for the C2 in the future.
