Is my Jolla C2 hardware broken?

Hi,

my Jolla C2 from last August was running fine until I installed 5.0.0.78 some days ago. Since the next reboot after the installation the phone is in a reboot loop. I corrected some file system errors in recovery mode. I tried to factory reset, which failed with “md5sum: can’t read ‘root.img.gz’: Input/output error”. I reinstalled in fastboot mode, but the problem persists.

Right now the file system check does not even runs through, as it takes more than 10 minutes. And the time between two reboots got really long. Does this sound like a broken hardware to you?

Hard for me to say. There is always a full reflash.

No. It sounds like software.
But if your phone isn’t working after reflashing, that doesn’t matter too much. Broken is broken. I hope someone will be able to help you with ideas of additional steps you could do to try and fix it.

Just to check: did you use the latest images? Did you try an image thatvpreviously worked for you?
Did you manually flash the images, or only used the privided script? I.e. Manually typing in multiple flashboot commands.

Thank you for your hints. I followed the instructions of flashing-README.txt, which is part of each Sailfish OS release zip and looks like here Fastboot flashing of Jolla C2 . I tried versions 5.0.0.77 and 5.0.0.78. The .77 work previously on my device. I did not find any script to flash the device.

Flash-script is not needed, just perform:

FLASHING TO START

Give the following commands one by one (‘sudo’ may not be necessary). We recommend copy-pasting the commands to avoid typos.

sudo fastboot flash boot_a hybris-boot.img
sudo fastboot flash boot_b hybris-boot.img
sudo fastboot flash vendor_boot_a vendor_boot.img
sudo fastboot flash vendor_boot_b vendor_boot.img
sudo fastboot flash dtbo_a dtbo.img
sudo fastboot flash dtbo_b dtbo.img
sudo fastboot flash userdata sailfish.img001
sudo fastboot flash super fimage.img001

The last two commands may take up to 3-4 minutes in total.

(*) Fastboot flashing also works on Windows computers with the Sony fastboot driver installed for Xperia phones! Install the driver in this way. You will need an Xperia phone to do it. You will also need to copy the two DLL files and fastboot.exe from an Xperia flashing folder to the C2 folder.

I indeed found I was mistaken. There is no flashing script.

Not yet, but now the phone already fails with the charging animation. I assume some hardware died and phone is beyond repair. I hope, it will be replaced.
