How to setup outlook account?

HI All,

Read the FAQs and If I’m wrong, someone correct me - In order to avoid doubld posts on the similiar issue an existing thread is to be used?

Note: I have had to replace the fullstops with (dot) to comply with the two link limit for new users…

A quick bg info:

Xperia 10 Single Sim
O/S 3.3
Build: Rokua 3.3.0.16
Device adaptation: 0.0.4.6
Installed Exchange Version: 0.3.28 Pre-Installed with ROM (Store Version showing as 0.3.11)

Posting as I am also having issues setting up Outlook(dot)com emails.
I have tried two different emails - labeled A and B for simplicity.

Email A:
I have tried m(dot)hotmail(dot)com, m(dot)outlook(dot)com, settings listed here by Microsoft.

None worked with , the closest I’ve gotten (I suppose) is the phone showing “Retrieving settings from Server” for a few minutes (using m(dot)outlook(dot)com, port 993) before timing out with “problem with checking credentials” etc.

The same issue persists with adding general email.

Even the installed app from store did not work.

Email B:

As above, what worked is uninstalling 0.3.28 and installing 0.3.11 from the store.

Username: full email i.e. email@outlook(dot)com

Email: email@outlook(dot)com

Password: email password

Tapped on More.

Used the Imap settings in the above Microsoft FAQ link:
Server & Domain is the same: Outlook.office365.com
Port 993
Encryption: SSL

This worked.

The only difference between Email A and B is that B does not have 2 Factor Authentication enabled.

So I turned off 2 FA in email A and that worked.

So out of curiousity I tried adding another email account, nada, nothing, removing 2fa, identity apps etc, didn’t work, added them back still same issue.

Both email A and B added successfully after countless attempts.

So after all that it seems the exchange app is an incredibly temperamental P.O.S

Edit: Spelling - two not to

Hi there,
I#m new in the forum and i have the same behaviour of the Exchange App.

Xperia 10 Dual Sim
O/S 3.3
Build: Rokua 3.3.0.16
Device adaptation: 0.0.4.6
Installed Exchange Version: 0.3.28 Pre-Installed with ROM (Store Version showing as 0.3.11)

Since my company changed Office365 login and authentication to Multi-Factor-Authentication i can’t setup Exchange Account in my mobile phone.

It worked fine without MFA and with Sailfish OS 3.2.1 Nuuksio.

@TechFreak1: How can i install Version 0.3.11 from the store? If i uninstall 0.3.28 and install the store version of the Exchange App it installs version 0.3.28 and i can’t choose an older version. I would like to test the behaviour with version 0.3.11.

Same here.

The native mail and calendar app with Exchange support worked flawless, until I was forced to use 2FA. I could register my Phone with the SailOTP app for generating Tokens, but the mail app doesn’t support Modern Authentication. I raised a case with Jolla and they say that they will look into this feature request but have no planning or date when this will be implemented. They suggested that I should make a new feature request on the forum and with substantial likes, it might speed them up.
There is already a feature request for this by tehhel , however it’s hardly noticed.

So I’m on the same page, locked out from my mail and calendar on my sailfish phone

same here - in the meantime, i’m using the Outlook Android app but doesn’t like it a lot.
Would be nice if Jolla implements Oauth for Office365/Outlook.com (my company is using DUO as 2FA).
@Sakul did you open a feature request already, or there’s only the link you posted?

Hi Carton,
Good to see that I’m not the only one struggling with this matter. I didn’t open a feature request yet, as the one of tehhel has the same functional request. However I will make a new one which hopefully gathers more attention.

PS I can use 2FA with OWA on my sailfish, but the webclient has a lot of drawbacks and isn’t that usefull to me.

@Carton,

Feature request is made.

Just in case anyone is still experiencing issues settting up an outlook.com or hotmail email account in 2023:

Yes, it seems Microsoft Exchange account type works correctly for those (did not need a real O365 or Exchange365 account - thanks MS ).

On Xperia 10 III, Sailfish OS 4.5.0.24:

  1. I had to first enable “Two-step verification” in the Microsoft account >> Security area. As soon as that is enabled, exit the wizard don’t setup any more Two step verifications. This is just so the option appears.
  2. Then I needed to setup an “App password” within Microsoft account >> Security >> App passwords.

Instructions from @Thaodan , but I could not find similar instructions on the forum:
https://thaodan.de/how_to_use_office_365_with_sailfishos_exchange.html

  • Now in the password field use the newly created “App password”.
  • In the domain field use outlook.office365.com .

This seems to actually work, whereas IMAP to outlook.com didn’t work for me (Problem with authentication on Xperia 10 III).

Thanks

Trying to set up Outlook account (Microsoft Exchange and general e-mail) for C2.
For Microsoft Exchange I use:
username: my e-mail address
password: I tried general password and app-password
Server:
eas.outlook.com (tried also m.outlook.com / outlook.office365.com) port 443
But I get error, that “User data verification failed”

I guess it is that outlook demands 0AUTH2 for login and sailfish app doesn’t have it. A workaround is to make another mail account, i.e. google and set the outlook mail to forward all messages to that account. It’s possible in the web mail settings of outlook.

App passwords seem deprecated after September 16h (see If Modern Authentication is forced, are app passwords still working? - Microsoft Q&A).

Does it mean, that I cannot use Outlook contacts in C2?

It means you cannot use mail/contacts/calendar or anything else via Microsoft on any SFOS device until an updated version is released.

However, as a workaround, you may be successful with syncing contacts via one of the other possibilities like Nextcloud, or Memotoo (<== I happen to like them, they support syncing everything to anything).
Sync the MS stuff into an account there, and to the device from that.

(Side note: that’s what you get by putting your trust in and relying on a company like Microsoft. But I guess the ship has sailed.)

I have just received my Xperia 10 III with Sailfish 4.6 installed a with Microsoft Exchange add on.

I have failed to connect my web-based Outlook email Microsoft 365 Basic account @live.co.uk despite multiple attempts

Can anyone help with “step by step” instructions?

It’s not clear to me which username, password, domain, port or security I should use.

Thank you for your help and trouble here

Step by step:

  1. You can’t. Microsoft chose to break it for you.

What used to work is:

For IMAP-based access:

For EAS (ActiveSync)-based access:

Source: Set up email in Android email app - Microsoft Support

To confirm, is now the only way to view outlook emails on Sailfish to use the outlook app? The Microsoft IMAP/POP, Exchange and 365 options don’t work for personal emails?

For the life of me, I can’t get an outlook email set up following any kind of setup. Even restarting the phone after the account failed to setup doesn’t work (even though the account shows up in the mail app, the emails don’t sync).

I can manage to get a work email operating through the Microsoft 365 option - I don’t really want to subscribe for my person emails.

No, you can use other Android Email apps, like K9 Mail.

I should have phrased my comment differently. Is there no way to use the native Sailfish mail app with personal Outlook email accounts?

I tried Memotoo to connect Outlook.com, but failed. Getting error “may be wrong login/password”.

That seems correct. I tested the Outlook app and it works. 2FA was enabled in the Microsoft account, and the account was paired with Foil Auth as authenticator app (run from Terminal using harbour-foilauth command). Interesting side-note: so far (in 1 month time) the 2FA session token has apparently not expired and even forcing a sign-out from the Microsoft account (~ ‘sign out everywhere’) does not seem to have an effect.

I just use the Android Outlook app. No 2FA though. I switch between phones too often to want to worry about an authenticator app. Native notifications would be great, however.
